Actually, in terms of their aesthetic, that was probably a better name for them based on song-titles like "the shah sleeps in Lee harvey's grave" and an ep-title like "Cream corn from the socket of davis" with a negative of cream-corn flowing out of Sammy Davis Jr's eye-socket on the cover.
Basically, they had a special "aesthetic" and "humour" that the Fred Astaire name arguably captured better even if it's a hopeless name obviously. The name-dropping of Gary Shandling for no apparent reason whatsoever on a later album (="Pioughd" in 91) fits that vibe as well...
BTW, amazing band in the 80's even if their albums didn't really capture their brilliance; the first time I heard them was on a live-broadcast of an Amsterdam show from '86 on swedish national radio alternative music show "Bommen" back in 88-89 and I never heard them sound better on record; they were the Grateful Dead of noise-rock in a way and it's a shame they have become so overshadowed by Sonic Youth in terms of 80's noise-rock cred because they were just as interesting and FAR more diverse/experimental; I think their goofy humour and Zappa/Beefheart attitude is too far removed from modern day indie-aesthetics compared with Sonic youth's more 2timeless" high brow meets pop-culture artsiness...

Lavemangsmugglarna (=the enema smugglers in english).
On the surface, that may sound like a typical punk-rock name or something like the Butthole Surfers or whatever but the thing is that this band played "serious", somewhatjangly indie-pop/rock with "normal" (well, I guess they had some humour in there) lyrics and everything so the band-name just stuck out like a sore thumb.
Basically, the awfulness of the name is somewhat related to the music they play IMO; if a punk-band is called "Anal plugs" or something, that's not a big deal but if you are a serious singer/songwriter and call yourself the Rectal Rebuilder, maybe it's not too good of an idea...

I loved that record back in the day (not sure it holds up but why wouldn't it? Motörhead and Ramones are timeless as far as I'm concerned).
BTW, I watched a live-show with Rock Bitch back in the day (=the band who threw out a golden condom at the show which would let the "lucky" guy who caught it fuck their guitarist after the show). They sucked (duh!) but their musicianship was surprisningly good, try playing a fancy guitarsolo while someone is eating your pussy; they had it down to a science... Basically, worthless band but one hell of an experience; they even let off some "golden showers" in the mouths of eachothers...
I still remember where I was when someone introduced me to them. 'They're called WHAT?'
Dayglo Abortions. These guys were extremely offensive in every way. I got drunk with them a couple times when I was a teenager. They were like that in real life too.
Somebody already said 'analcunt'. I can't listen to their music but I really enjoy their lyrics. Can't think of another band more offensive than that.

They were some thrash/hardcore crossover with funny lyrics, right? I haven't heard that name in decades but it rings a bell... I heard so much swhit in that vein back in the late 80's-the skaters loved the crossover. On the topic of canadian bands with not so stupid names, are you familiar with Infernäl Mäjesty (yes, the "metal"-umlauts are supposed to be there; hilarious!!!)? I still love that record they did. Exciter, Voivod, Anvil (first two albums only), Razor and Sacrifice-Canada was dope back then!!!

They were punk rock but at their heart they were metalheads. They wrote songs about raping girls and other really disgusting things. One of my best friends growing up was a punk scenester type so most of my exposure came through him. Voivod were great. We used to buy hash off the guys in Anvil when I was 15ish.
In toronto...there's a hippy/artsy community called Kensington Market which was (still is I guess) the centre of the punk scene. The big guys who kinda oversaw everything and kinda policed the area were a band called 'bunch of fuckin goofs'.

The funny thing about those losers (and yes, I think it's fair to call them that) is that they have made quite a comeback after the undeniably touching movie about them; in sweden, a reissue of the "Metal on metal"-single even hit the nr 1 (yup!) on the charts. Sure, it was "irony" and people getting together to help them out but still...
They were always a second-tier band to me; below Accept (who themselves were obviously not Priest/Maiden-level) but on the same level as, say, Raven or Saxon quality-wise back in the day. However, it's funny that the movie gave their career a second wind and a part of me always get happy when shit like that happens even if the band is less than stellar (again, they fell off tremendously by the third-fourth record or so)...

Dude...that movie made me well up. Even if you don't like the band or metal music. It was just a really great doc about friendships and relationships. And the whole 'chasing the dream' pros and cons. One of the best music docs ever imo.
Their rehearsal space was in a tuff part of scarborough (outskirts of toronto)....maybe 20 or 30 bands there...mostly glam metal types (late 80s/early 90s). The type of place where the word 'Nirvana' would start fights. Skid Row was the most famous band to rehearse there. And those guys were complete and utter assholes in every sense of the word. EVERY band bought hash off Anvil....something they didn't go into during the doc. That's how those guys made ends meet while chasing the dream for alot of those years. And there's no denying that Lips is and still is a sweetheart. Just a really non-assuming guy who makes everyone around him feel good.

I'm a huge doc fan so I can appreciate the way the filmmaker explored all the different sides of the story. Like the sacrifices that their wives and children might suffer because of their 'dream'. But the dream also was something that was beautiful and inspiring. It was really well-balanced, perfectly weighted storytelling. Hope and glory served with a measure of pragmatic tragedy. They ARE 'losers'...but someone who spends their whole life doing something they hate for material success can also learn something from them.
