Im not counting RnH as it was an offshoot and not a 'proper' album release. I know they got clwoned for RnH too, for being to serious and adaucity of their covering and embracing as new , already established forms of music. I think all three had balls to release what they did after their worldwide smashes. U2 changed up their sound and presentation.

and yeah I know the album's comprised of half or more old songs but it also had a few new ones that were all singles & became some of their bigger songs (Desire, Angel Of Harlem, When Love Comes To Town, All I Want Is You) plus had a theatrically released concert film & world tour behind it.
Rattle & Hum was when they became target practice for their politics, earnestness, self-serious demeanor, etc.
The backlash set in there & then they went to blow it up.
Achtung Baby's not a reaction to Joshua Tree as much as it was a reinvention because they'd taken the Joshua Tree thing to its final conclusion with Rattle + Hum.

It wasnt a true followup, just because they created songs good enough to become staples. That was just testament to their talent.
AB was their first true album, set out in creation to be their new one. RnH was the (almost) typical record made while on the road playing their successful worldwide latest. Because they were so big, so came a full fledged movie and double album. It was basically a Amnesiac but it came first and taken to a higher media level.

Rattle & Hum was sorta them taking their style & trying to mesh it with more American blues/soul/early-rock-n-roll tradition.
And after reaching their saturation point here, they went to Berlin to find that German Engineered Euro Flavor & more ambient soundscapes.
That's a move they likely got from Bowie's Berlin Eno records after the Philly-soul-leanings of Young Americans, the subsequent U.S. tour & Station to Station album in L.A. (with pretty much the Young Americans album/tour band minus David Sanborn's sax).

Lindsey definitely was ON ONE when they made this
You know he was on some shit when Warner Bros. actually put a "Special Thanks to Lindsey Buckingham From the Band" credit on the back, even though the band co-produced the record with Richard Dashut and Ken Caillat
And for all the talk of Janelle Monae's alleged "bloat," this is the very definition of a self-indulgent double album, and it's great
Not sure if it's touching Rumours, though

for this lineup.
That album was stuffed with almost as many singles as 'Rumours', it just didn't have the platform/backstory & a couple of the album tracks were less essential.
Fleetwood Mac to me is their Off The Wall to Rumors' Thriller.

and I agree..its underrated and damn near just as good as Rumors. The stew was perfect on this one and was the cause for Rumors

My favorite album of theirs I know I am in the minority but I am not a big fan of Stevie Nicks and on here she didn't really have strong material So that's why the albums drags somewhat I retracked it without her stuff and it it is nice You could also just put all of Lindsey's stuff together This was his solo album with Mick and John as his rhythm section The guitar work is great
