"***CONFESSION WEDNESDAY***"

Not for nothing, the boards have been moving kind of slow lately but i think the quality ratio has improved substantially. Even all the tit for tat shit isn't really detracting from the good stuff I'm seeing. Keep it up.

Also I'm constantly reminded of why that list of other hip-hop boards is irrelevant. This is a hip-hop board like The Roots is a hip-hop band (point driven home by Wake Up Ghost) and IMO that's for the better. We talk about everything here. And even if that obscure topic only gets a few replies odds are they are from folk genuinely knowledgeable and or genuinely interested. Oddly enough 'relevant' hip-hop is the only place where shit starts to fall apart.

On a sad note 15's last two non Fallon posts don't deem well for future contributions. Well the second to last one did, him posting his thoughts about a band he enjoys. But then that had to get fucked up in some strange way. *smh*

and that 'sampler' early this year were great.

Not sure why these two new songs were so underwhelming, Bad Girls looked like she was on the right side of the fence.

Not really sure why, 'cause they'd usually be the exact type of thing that I'd hate. But, hey, they work for me.

- My homie who lives in my loft-building recently gave me the entire NIN discography for me download/listen to. This is after I put him up on all sorts of underground/"nerdy" hip-hop. I've started burning it to the hard drive, but I've been slow to make my way through. Been mostly listening to the remixes and what not. I gotta do better

- I'll hopefully getting back into the podcast game soon. That's one of the things that makes me truly happy, at least creatively.

but have been very very busy at work, a trend which seems likely to continue

I doubt I'd be able to resist if someone else opened up a session though!

And, I've been having my best year in terms of musical output. Constant stream of ideas and I've already doubled most years' outputs in terms of number of tracks completed. Have also managed to work out arrangements I really like on a few traditionals that have eluded me in the past. Seem to be finding a good community of like minded not-quite-old-time musicians on Soundcloud, have actually been listening to way more amateur stuff there than professional stuff.

1. Ive gone back to howisya's top 50 albums of the 2000-2009 post and found some great gems such as the Saul Williams Niggy Tardust and etc.

2. Been heavy into industrial and goth music lately such as Joy Division, Depeche Mode, NIN, and Throbbing Gristle.

3. Jimmy Smith's Root Down live album is the perfect setting I want the organ instrument to be placed. Raw, gritty, and funky.

4. Havent heard the new 14KT Nickel and Dimed record, but hopefull that hes still got the heat.

5. Raymond Scott is a true originator and innovator of electronic and synth based music. He introduced us Robert Moog. I havent even delved into his Looney Toones compositions.

1. I've been checking out lots of psychedelia from the 60s lately. there are so many dope records its crazy. Like seriously I'm obsessed with the effects on the guitars/backwards tracks/keyboard and/or organ styles that were used in that era. I have always liked this era of music allot but I never really started digging like this until about april this year....it has had crazily dope results

2. Law School has made me listen to lots of jazz (well I normally listen to lots of jazz but now I do so pretty much out of necessity). It helps me study....primarily the In A Silent Way Sessions, Olé/My Favorite Things by John Coltrane and Idle Moments by Grant Green pretty much every day. If anyone has recommendations of other jazz albums that they think are great to study to that would be great. I also study to allot of Blockhead, mainly Music By Cavelights, I just put that shit on loop.

3. This year has really been weak in comparison to 2012 musically ( http://rateyourmusic.com/list/Kosa12/2013/ ). That Earl album was good, but at the same time disappointing. He really should've switched up the vibe instrumentally a little bit on that album for a few tracks IMO. Still looking forward to the new Oddisee, new Alchemist/Evidence and new L'Orange/Stik Figa. Also I'm fiending to listen to the new Janelle Monae but haven't had time yet since I want to get through it all in one sitting. Loved her first album.

4. The new Em' single is mindblowingly bad like holy fuck (I haven't really liked Em' since his second official album though)

Lyrically, you'd be hard pressed to find someone better as a writer.

We love to speak about Em (as someone was in this post) but outside of Em's rhyme patterns and weaving of words he has absolutely nothing. Aes has crazy rhyme patterns, vivid and poetic lyrics which are cryptic and lend themselves to repeated listens. Delivery wise he absolutely destroys beats. I get if people don't like his voice but its really an acquired taste. Like I told Shameless Plug a long time ago, Aesop is like the Bob Dylan of hip-hop. Except he doesn't put in as much work as Bob did.

Labor Days, None Shall Pass, and Skelethon are all great pieces o music.

And I haven't even gotten to production yet. ZZZ Top? Zero Dark Thirty? This guy is a great producer.

Around 2007 when None Shall Pass and I'll Sleep When You're Dead dropped I would have said El-P was better but I can't say that today.

Maybe I'm on a heavy Aesop trip but I tend to be drawn to MCs who are lyrically a step above the rest and Aes is just that.
