"I found the essential Jimi Hendrix vol.2 cassette at the salvation army"

I listened to this cassette and I really liked machine gun, I cant live today, and hearing the star spankled banner again.....machine gun had some really awesome guitar playing....at one point, it sounded like jimi was playing japanese on the guitar and some really nice effects and technique.....gloria is also an ok song with jimi talking about a girl that slept around and who's breath smelled like so called "whipped pussy"....so he says in the song. it also included when the wind cries mary and wild thing.....anyways, this is the song that I stands out for me especially since Ive heard his star spankled banner many times..

man, I been discovered hendrix long time ago and let me be bold and confess that I always thought that Prince was a better guitarist than hendrix. I always thought that Prince was a better overall musician that hendrix, let alone showmanship.the only other thing that I have by hendrix is a red vinyl called high, live and dirty and I only liked people people people which was ok but i havent listened to it in a long time.

you haven't listened to enough Jimi Hendrix.

Prince doesn't even believe he's a better guitarist than Jimi Hendrix.

Jimi Hendrix did more for guitar in 4 years than Prince has in 40 & I say that with Prince being one of my favorite all-around artists of all-time.

If funk is what you favor than get 'Band of Gypsys' & go from there.

We all our entitled to our ways, so feel free to carry on with yours, but what i've noted throught the years of watching you post here is that you tend to reply in a way that leaves no room for conversation. this post is about your finding a cassette of a greatest hits compilation. what are folks supposed to reply to that?

then you come with your opinion about prince vs hendrix which you're entitled to, but one it's not something a lot of folk will agree with you on and two you don't really offer much room for anything to be said other than bickering about your opinion. so most i'm sure do what i do which is get a quick chuckle and keep it moving rather than trying to engage with it.

and not for nothing i think you probably have quite a bit to contribute because you seem pretty knowledgeable about the artists you like, but again the presentation of your ideas here are often less about conversation and more just you sounding off your opinion. again you're entitled to it, but don't throw a hissy fit when people don't bite.

honest. I don't even know how old you are, so you could be in that age bracket for all I know. Most of the people in this forum are music nerds, so they aren't going to respond to a post that simply states that you purchased a Hendrix album and you liked it. You have a larger point though about Prince and Hendrix, so just make it, and move on from there.

Now, what is this bullshit? Do you know anything about the historical/cultural context in which Jimi plied his trade?

again, I am not a big hendrix fan and ive said that before.....hendrix did cater to a predominantly white audience and what i said wasnt bullshit....it was the truth.....he did cater to a predominantly white audience and all i am saying is that Prince had a different approach and had a diverse crowd....I never said that there was anything wrong with hendrix catering to a predominantly white audience, all i am saying is that ive always liked Prince better.

Jimi played the music he wanted to play. Learn something about the man and his times before you accuse him of minstrelry.

In response to Reply # 12

i'm not saying you have to be a fan,
but why is a knock on him that he wasn't deep in the funk?

is it because he's black?

yeah, hendrix was a rock guy.
he didn't sing or play with soul in a traditional way.

so what?
why do you feel that he had to?

i just accept your premise that hendrix didn't have funk,
even though i disagree. he could play funky when he wanted to,
although to be honest, i was never a fan of band of gypsies.

but why is it a problem for you that hendrix wasn't funky?

because I always liked Prince better, thats why and unlike hendrix, prince had plenty of funk in his catalog even in the beginning....actually, he stretched the boundaries of funk with pop music.

which is fine. but it's not a knock on hendrix.
also, the idea of hendrix "pandering" to anybody is laughable.
nothing about his music is accessible.

into his music, and it's too bad that we were robbed of further refinement of this strand. That is my favorite album of his. Jimi doesn't fit neatly in the box, but the dude had soul for days

i think i just preferred it when he was in front of dudes that played like jazz musicians.
but that band did have some cuts.

i really dig machine gun.

was he playing with band of gypsies on "crash landing" and "first rays of the new morning sun?" i also dig that new "Neptune" album that was released recently.

really, Hendrix stuff is usually great to listen to because even his outakes sound inspired.

"Crash Landing" to a large extent is based on producer Alan Douglas overdubbing new music to barely-finished Hendrix-tracks. However, the two BoG-songs on the record (="With the power/Power of soul" and "Message to love") are largely authentic even if I think the percussion was overdubbed. Much of the rest is other guys replacing the OG backing-tracks and I've heard rumours that much of this had to do with Douglas beefing with Mitchell and-to a lesser extent-Redding over the way Hendrix legacy was treated; by removing them from the package, they didn't get performer-credit for the songs...

Anyway, many of the songs on the last two Hendrix-posthumous albums are tracks from these records done without overdubs from outsiders but it's worth pointing out that many songs are cut-and-paste jobs with producer Eddie Kramer using numerous different takes and also the time-stretching function (not available in the 70's to Douglas obviously) to make various tracks fit in terms of timing (time-stretching allows you to change the tempo without changing the pitch).

For example, the great version of "Somewhere" on "People..." has Kramer combining a newly discovered instrumental backing track that Steven Stills sold the label-he plays bass-with the previously released, rugged version available on the boxset (seriously, Mitchell's drumming on that track is wack as fuck but in his defense, he was trying to fit his drums after Jimi's death unto a loose demo-recording not meant for general consumption)-it's not really "Real" Hendrix-performances and that's the issue I have:While I dig hearing those songs as nice as possible, new technology has also made it possible for them to repackage the same shit over and over with slight differences.

As for "First Rays...", it's primarily a combination of the Cry of Love and "Rainbw Bridge"-albums released shortly after Jimi's death and those were the most finished songs available even if Mitchell overdubbed many drum-tracks in '71 (=the songs where Buddy Miles played drums; while I prefer Mitchell overall, Miles drumming on "Earth blues" as heard on the boxset and in a more stripped-down form on "People..." is SO much better than Mitchell's-the latter seemed to miss the gospel/soul-vibe and instead just plays fancy fills and shit which misses the point of *that* song) and several songs were, again, either unfinished or posthumous hatchet jobs. Still, I *think* most of those songs were closed to finished even if it is impossible to know of course...
