...when entries for suggestions were open in 2011 (I think that's when it was), I wanted to do them for three specific albums that will celebrate 40th anniversaries in 2014. I grew up with them and they paved the way for a good part of my music listening habits.

They are of the soul/funk/jazz persuasions. I'm aware that they didn't want any jazz albums, since there is a wealth of jazz books out there, so it would've been a battle between my two other choices. The photo on one album cover was shot in Colorado, the other in California.

I remember reading the review of that album in Rolling Stone in the 80's before I knew who they were. Ever since then I've read many a review comparing some duo or singer songwriter to them and sometimes that album. Never knew they would be so influential. The latest comparison; The Civil Wars.

I don't think I caught the reviews when it actually came out, I was probably a bit too young but I do remember it being the only album in the Top 10 of Rolling Stone's 'Top 100 Albums of the 1980s' issue-turned-paperback-book that I didn't immediately recognize.

And it still took me years to get around to really hearing it but I'm a fan of it as well.

Richard Thompson's work in general was an artist I seemed to read about more than actually hear in subsequent years until lonesome_d put me onto some Fairport Convention & Richard/Linda albums in this forum probably 5 or 6 years ago.

Incidentally I think 'I Wanna See The Bright Lights Tonight' & 'Hokey Pokey' are Richard & Linda albums on par with 'Shoot Out The Lights' but they don't have the critical cache perhaps because they don't have the recorded-and-toured-for-during-a-couple's-divorce backstory. They're just good albums.

I've read many of those too, at this point tho I think part of that may just be an easy-bordering-on-lazy comparison for a music critic to make of male/female duos in that mold.

But while we're here talking about big wars & married couple artist acts, this song 'War Is Over' by a North Carolina husband/wife act called Lowland Hum from this year http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2013/06/21/193458054/first-watch-lowland-hum-war-is-over sorta caught my attention & I believe got that same comparison as well, so rather than say it's Richard/Linda-esque I'll go with um......Aimee Mann & Michael Penn?

Either way, heard it on All Songs Considered & sorta seeped in, this was the first time I saw images set to it.

b/c I thought this immediately on reading the above and decided not to post it b/c I didn't want to seem like THAT guy. hah.

have had Lowland Hum in the car the past week, along with Civil Wars... Lowland Hum is far the smoother listen, but that's both a weakness and a strength. I think it's the better album, but it lacks the emotional wallop (even without the subtext) that Civil Wars has. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

Oh, and speaking of RT, in case you haven't seen these:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVpLi1iJH7Y
a show I remember reading about when it happened and thinking 'My GOD'
also, the RT electric trio just played the folk fest, and once again the subject was taboo in my household... good thing though as my baby went to te ER and then overnighted the Wednesday before. Not a big deal as it turned out but going camping for 4 nights immediately following that would have been grounds for divorce.

nice, I was sure you were already up on that, I haven't actually heard the full album yet but that song stayed burrowed in my head for a week or two after I heard it until I finally had to pull it up again.

but lack of Fest creates a lasting void somewhere in my thorax that aches every August and beyond.

*edit* was actually introduced ot Lowland Hum by a fellow OKP, otherwise I wouldn't have been aware of it. War Is Over has a wonderful verse, but the chorus kinds loses me a bit. I think there are better songs on it.

Got it last year after a bad break up; someone on OKP recommended it to me. I listened to that album every damn day last summer. Adnd the book is really interesting. It was written sort of like a novella, but with factual information about the album and the process of it being made.

That book makes you appreciate the album so much more. Gets real in-depth about the making of the album and Bowie's coked out mindstate at the time. Great reading, no unnecessary tangents or nazel gazing from the author about how the album changed their life.

The introduction to the book and album is inspirational enough, and kind of contextualizes the feat Shadow accomplished with Endtroducing, but like many discussions amongst the most catalog-crazy music nerds, the interview portion was dry and rife with minutiae.

I put it down, but it did make me buy the album again.

personally, i really enjoy more fact-based shit. like recording session info, equipment used, vision of the project, artists' intentions, or even testimonials from collaborators. interviews, dates, places, names, context, stuff like that. the paul's boutique book was on the money.

i get turned off when the authors made it about them. the SOTT was filled with that crap. i don't wanna read about how you begged your mama to get the cassette at target when you were a kid.

the sly riot one wasn't that bad. but it wasn't that good either.

the endtroducing one read like a magazine interview that wasn't edited. lot of masturbatory shit from the author too, as i remember. gimme the interview from keyboard magazine in 97 all day instead of this book.

so, i'm 1 for 4 at this point with these 33 1/3s.

i'm cringing about the donuts one that's supposed to come out. and i stayed faaar away from the jeff buckley grace one.

It's been a couple years since I read it but quite enjoyed. Rare to read anything about them though so I was easy to win over. Hearing some of Pollards thoughts behind lyrics was great.

Prince - SOTT
The Replacements - Let It Be
Jeff Buckley -Grace
David Bowie - Low
Springsteen - Born In The USA
The Band - Music From Big Pink
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over The Sea
Pixies - Doolittle
Sly - There's A Riot Going On
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Celine Dion - Let's Talk About Love
Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones
Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen
Pavement - Wowee Zowee
Television - Marquee Moon
Talking Heads - Fear Of Music

It's going on 10 years since I've some of these so my memory is a bit foggy, but I enjoyed them all to varying degrees, with the exception of the book on Wowee Zowee. Terrible writing and no focus whatsoever. I think the Prince, Bowie and Celine books were probably my favourites.

the tribe one was self indulgent and tried too hard, but the beasties boys and public enemy ones were good, and covered a lot about the sampling and historical context of the albums and groups.

i enjoyed the shadow one, too, but am more familiar the other two albums.

Actually had this one in the pop books collection afterall. Read it.

If youre a Stones fan (and who isnt besides max?), its def a good read about the smeminal album, it'smaking, and past inspiration etc. Dude who wrote it was/is a musician of another genre too and his take is refreshing.

Basically saying they were kinda shady on the business tip, and advising writers not to work with them. Can't find it now, but it was... interesting.
