I was a little underwhelmed my first listen, but I think it's a grower. Pretty subdued record, and it's great for putting on in the background and chilling.

This year has already been exceptional for new music, but this album almost feels like the grand finale.

Even the new versions of old songs are so drastically improved, they're like new tunes.

And I know it's good because I already know all the songs by title. It's literally been years since I learned all of an album's songs by title this quickly.

Incredible mood music, reminds me of a young Joe Henry. Will stay in rotation for a minute. Can't believe this dude's only 19. Does he have people he's worked with previously or anything else to catch up from him?

on the surface sounds like its derivative of something that came before it, yet I can't pinpoint any individual artist or band that he actually sounds like

All the press releases say Morrissey and Edwyn Collins.. im not familiar with their discographies, but just listening to the voices he sounds nothing like that to me

Love both Krule and Tame Impala from what I've heard though

He's also stolen a thing or two from Aztec Camera:

(it's the Morrissey comparisons I don't get)

But you're spot on otherwise. There's a lot of "This reminds me of. . ." on 6 Feet, but on deeper thought, I can never really put my finger on what that is.

Didn't realize it was the same singer, just the production and songwriting in the Orange Juice tracks sounded more similar to King Krule than the newer solo Edwyn Collins songs I youtubed

been meaning to get my thoughts about this down for about a week.

on first listen i liked it but wasn't impressed. than i sampled some songs here and there for a couple of days...

it wasn't until i listened by myself ON Headphones that i really began to love most of the album

its very "pretty and ugly". melodies that stay in your head, production dynamics that reveal themselves on repeated listens and really stange vocal styling with strong lyrics

favorites are: Baby Blue, Border Line, Will I Come, A Lizard State and Bathed In grey

i keep comparing him and Blake's Overgrown for my own odd reasons, but as of right now, they're my two favorite none rap related albums of 2013. For me they both exist within and without current music trends for electronic, soul and pop.

Where Blake comes off like a relucant critical darling nurtured in the halls of the artistic bourgeoisie, Krule seems like the struggling urban folk hero coming down from herion.

all in all I like 6 Feet Beneath the Moon quite a bit, if slightly less than Overgrwon

I'm going to listen to Austin's links later to get an idea where he's pulling from, because i dont' have a sense/grasp myself. oddly enough i'd assume he spends his days listening to rap or the beat gen producers, even if his music sounds very little like either

There's parts where he just doesn't even try to sing and he's basically rapping. The coda on 'Has this Hit?', if you really take a step back and think about it, is one of the most unique moments in pop music in some time: it's a British guy rapping over rockabilly guitar.

Let that sink in.

'Bathed in Grey' is basically a 1996 hip hop beat.

The closer you listen more intricacy is revealed. It sounds to give the impression that it's tossed off and casual but it's actually precise when you focus on it. Haven't finished it yet but I'm seeing how it's probly a grower.

Surprised noone's said Jay Dee yet. His hip hop side is all Dilla to me....and that's a pretty specific thing.

But I didn't want to harp on it because Archy mentioned in an interviews a while ago that he was a fan and now everything anybody writes about him goes out of its way to mention it — which is fine, but it doesn't seem like it means anything beyond namedropping when done in this context.

Here's the full text of my review:
_____________________________________________________________
King Krule — 6 Feet Beneath the Moon
(five stars)

It should be mentioned before I even begin this review by saying that this is not actually a review as much as it is a very personal meditation on my own life as a music fan. In fact, let's just cut to the review right now: this is a masterpiece of brilliant, poignant, essential, life-affirming and life-changing music. Everyone should learn and sing these songs for the rest of time.

I don't remember it being very hot, or there being much rain (for a change). It was around the 4th of July, 1996. I was able to play basketball without sweating to a drip, at least. The outside light by the garage had a burned out bulb and Grandpa Andy had not replaced it yet. So, this meant I had about three-quarters of an hour to play a little more after dinner, but after that, I would maybe watch TV or something.

I usually hated music videos. The visuals, that is. I loved the music. That's why I would switch to MTV or the Box as soon as I got the remote. So, it was late that night when I finally gained the remote control for the evening. MTV was in the middle of a Real World marathon, so over to the Box. It was somewhere in the second half of the video. Second chorus, where the bouncing karaoke alien head tells you the words. I recognized the voices right away. "This is new OutKast," my mind told me after about twenty seconds.

It would be nearly six weeks before I would actually hear that song again, when the album came out the 27th of August (oddly enough, the proper US release date for 6 Feet Beneath the Moon is the same). I worked hard around the house to get my mom to buy me ATLiens that Tuesday. Got it home, put it on and just stared at the stereo for about an hour. Time didn't stop initially, but when the album was over, it felt like maybe fifteen minutes had passed. It was the single most spiritual moment of my life up until that point. I understood about a billionth of what happened in the world and why, but this album —this music— made me not only cower in the sheer overwhelming behemoth of such thoughts but also washed me over with what can only be described as intense fascination with the whole lot of it.

That was the first time music changed the way I thought about the world. It made me dig deep into myself to reach an area of introspective clarity that's guided me in my everyday life, in varying degrees, ever since. There were a lot of these kinds of albums when I was younger. One a year, it seemed. All have a back story and I can recall the exact circumstances surrounding them. The last album that I really remember clutching onto my heart and mind with this much strength was Helplessness Blues (2011) . Before that, David Axelrod (2001). Before that, Like Water for Chocolate (2000).

They're getting fewer is what I'm trying to say. And certainly, my age has a lot to do with that. I am not able to romanticize things in my now mature mind the way I once did. So, immediately, everything is to be criticized before it can be properly enjoyed. There is so much caught up in listening to music these days besides actually just taking it in for what it is. My overly analytical music dork mind just doesn't allow me to let my guard down very often.

Anybody who's read Redundant Chicanery for a while knows how highly I think of King Krule. His words, his guitar playing, his unearthly voice and, most of all, his gift of being able to write such gorgeously resonating songs.

The arrangements of earlier songs (and indeed, some of the earlier versions of the songs on this album that first appeared on Archy's Zookid Bandcamp page in 2010) were like prototypes for the sound of the songs on 6 Feet Beneath the Moon. They sounded like what they were: the bedroom recordings of a teenage boy. But the songs themselves sounded from another planet. Classic rockabilly guitar colliding with modern drum machines, keyboards and a baritone singer that sounds equal parts classic crooner and shouting soul singer that speaks years of maturity beyond his age.

Just how good some of these songs are is truly remarkable. These are not just some songs banged out by a teenager and then moved on from. A look at Archy's old Bandcamp page liner notes for each song reveals a person who poured their entire soul into them.

The variety is astonishing: the jangle pop of 'Border Line'; the spliffed out angry faux James Brown of 'A Lizard State'; the nearly hip hop beats on 'Will I Come' and 'Bathed in Grey'; the woozy love drunk dream pop of 'Baby Blue'; the seeming sound of J Dilla's soul floating in space on 'Foreign 2'; or even the MPC-meets-big band on 'Neptune Estate.'

Some of these songs are years old. Proof positive that the truly best music is timeless.

It's what I listen to music for.

Album of the year(s).

I think mentioning dilla is more than just name-dropping though. I have no background on this guy whatsoever and went in listening without having read anything about him. Still haven't. The Dilla influence is completely tangible to me. You alluded to how the hip hop element in his sound actually works and I agree. Can't think of another 'indie' type act who has successfully done that....possibly EVER. I was ready to be annoyed....wasn't.

Do you have any info on how he records? With the same band he tours with? Does he do all the producing/engineering? Comes off as a solo project with enlisted help type of thing...but can't be sure.

Some of the lyrics too eh? 19 years old? Mindblowing is not hyperbole here. I'm very impressed. Can't really see him crossing over to a great extent though. Also...I checked out some live clips. I would NOT pay to see him live. He's definitely a studio artist for me.

In response to Reply # 32

Rodaidh McDonald has co-produced everything of his so far (except the Zoo Kid demos, which were presumably bedroom recordings). The only thing of his so far that has musician credits is the Rock Bottom / Octopus single which credits: Vocals - Archy / Guitar - Archy and Jack Towell / Drums - George Bass / Bass - James Wilson. The self-titled EP was recorded, according to the sleeve, "at home and at XL studios." Rock Bottom was recorded at Fish Factory in London (nothing listed for Octopus). There's only engineering credits for the album, no locations listed.

Of course, his voice is ill.

I like the moody, nocturnal, genre-less feel of the music.

Yes, the album runs a bit longer than it should and drags slightly near the end but it's still a vital debut.

KK is still a kid so we haven't heard the best from his yet but this first album hits that he's off to a damn good start.

And I don't understand it when 'Out Getting Ribs' is the second to last track and 'The Krockadile' is right before that. Is it 'Neptune Estate' and 'Bathed in Grey' that nobody likes?

I don't care for Cementality or Ocean Bed, and while I love Neptune Estate the song itself drags on for 2min too long. I cut it after the second verse on iTunes

Bathed in Grey is beautiful, Out Getting Ribs is great too

Ergo, he's way more like Edwyn Collins.

(but seriously, any band that Malcolm Ross played in was obviously a huge influence on King Krule)

It took a while but it all makes sense. His production work and guitar licks are really dope! I think the studio utilization of all that reverb on his vox really help and create this great texture of sound. But its the perfect soundtrack driving home after a gig at 2 or 3 am around LA.

"This is an album of perfect 'last' songs."

As in, an album of perfect "ending" songs. End of an album, end of a night, end of period of time. . . whatever. The whole thing just has a sense of finality to it for me.

—like all good "reasoning" about something as subjective as music should be—

First and foremost, it was released in summer. This firmly places it in summer in my mind. There is a lot of melancholy and dark undertones in the music, but I often associate these things with summer anyway because of their release dates. The Cure's Disintegration comes to mind foremost.

There are a lot of major seventh chords and deep, alternate voicings of otherwise normal chords, played throughout the album. Very warm, tonally. Very jazz-influenced, in that respect (Baby Blue and Ocean Bed come to mind). Something like the Krockadile just sounds like a 9pm sunset, as opposed to a 5pm one, to me.

There are many extremes of emotions expressed throughout the album's lyrics. All I really remember from the winters of my childhood spent nearly a mile above sea level is how I wished it would end soon. In these deep, immersed emotions that Archy sings about — I don't ever really recall being deeply in love or just as equally as heartbroken during any other time than when the temperature was 70 degrees or higher. There's something about warm temperatures that just facilitates more active attention to the interaction of the heart and the mind.

I love a good, bleak minor key outpouring of the heart as much as anybody on a cold grey day, but I just don't ever experience the passion and intensity of the outpourings like those on Six Feet when the temperature drops below a certain daily average.

Man, y'all gotta stop overhyping stuff. I went into listening to this album expecting it to be on the same level as Electric Lady or something based off this thread. Half way through this and it's not as profound as people are making it out to be.

I'd rather listen to the Arctic Monkey's latest album which is much much better to me.

He has enough charisma for about three stadiums full of people and his band is so good, it actually makes the 6 Feet songs sound overproduced by comparison. 'Baby Blue' and 'Krockadile' became these six or seven minute slow burning epics, while 'A Lizard State' and 'Easy Easy' sounded just about as loud and "fuck you, I'm punk rawk!!!" as you could imagine.

'Out Getting Ribs' was not only a guitar playing clinic (literally less than five feet from my face), it was the evening's highlight (among many) and I was literally in tears by the time they came back for 'Portrait in Black and Blue' for the encore.

I never thought I would say this, but the album did not do him justice as a performer.
