i get it
and if you perceive it as disingenuous rather than art
then you can pass on an artist
but getting to the point where you're trying to pull a card irl is doing a little too much, imo

In fact, seeing how many records sold, I'd say lots of people loved it.

for somebody that loves r&b, i really have a quiet distaste for most of it.
that's not to say that i dislike ALL beige r&b.
but i like it to have some kind of pep in its step.

the whispers, "the beat goes on" is awesome.
"treat her like a lady," yeah... that has some energy to it.

fredie jackson?
for the most part, i'm good.

i usually hate r&b songs that involve a dude simping or begging.
of course, there are lots of exceptions.

but as SoWhat said, i don't know what drugs the kids are using these days that make them want to hear songs in the club with no drums.
i don't know if i'd even want to try those drugs.

but whatever happened to r&b that had some kind of edge to it?

the "back to life" 12 inch has some edge to it.
even lisa stanfield "been around the world" has an edge.

it seems that r&b these days is either hip hop lite, creating the worst of both worlds... or just straight up neutered.
there is a balance somewhere.

as weird as i felt about mary j. blige singing over beats,
i'm actually nostalgic for that now.

and also... even the so-called "hard" rappers make
decadence sound so boring. that's my issue with g-funk,
and really it's my issue with 90 percent of what passes for rugged these days.

if a song by the temptations like "psychedilic shack" is more
rebellious than supposed scary rapper "lil' wayne,"
there is a problem.

First of all, there's plenty of rap that is "hard" in sound and content but not at all gangsta either. Public Enemy obviously comes to mind.

Second, I get really tired of arguments that assign every opinion you disagree with to every person who isn't yourself. It's a logical fallacy, and a blatant one. If you know a particular person or a few particular people who held both of these opinions, go after them. Otherwise you're just assuming it was the same people that said both things, when at least half the time it probably wasn't. Plenty of people here do like gangsta rap and always have; plenty of others like Drake and "emo rap"; so who exactly are you directing this at? Single them out. It's not you-vs.-the-hivemind (which is the exact problem that derails 3/4 of O_E's posts).

i don't understand how this lite weak sounding stuff gets over as something to groove to.drake to me is a updated version of PM Dawn. no diss their because i liked some of their stuff, however we weren't being pimped by the same 3-4 acts as we are nowadays.

we are in a era where only a handful of acts get played let alone seeing some real numbers.

the difference between now and then is you had far more balance, nowadays its one big Blur.

Gangsta, non gangsta, political, battle..whatever. Wack shit is negative to me so as long as people make good shit I don't need or require anyone to be gangsta or not.
