"Is there another MC/Group that could have a "Lost Tapes" (like NAS)"

I was listening to Lost Tapes today & was thinking are there any other acts that have great unreleased material that could have a Lost Tapes series or at least one CD. I mean, we got a chance to hear Du Rag, which is a great Nas song. Yes some of the others should have been on I Am but still. True, Tupac had plenty of unreleased material but to be honest most of it just wasn't that good.

Questions

1. Are there any other artist that has Lost Tapes material that you wish you could hear? Maybe you heard songs and wished they were put together for official release.
2. What do artist have so much unreleased material? Is it sample clearance issues, money etc..
3. Are you a fan of Nas Lost Tapes? Could more songs have been added?

Me: I would like to hear some of those Tribe song Chris Lighty was talking about on BRL Doc. I would like to hear maybe some unreleased Lil Wayne during the Carter 2-Mixtape Era before Carter 3. I would like to hear some unreleaased Outkast, Wu Tang and a few others. I did love Nas Lost Tapes but it could have been 20 track deep.

Thoughts?

Peace

Yeah, most of it might be on mixtapes but I would like to hear it remastered and released as an LP of best 20 songs from Lil Wayne..

He had FULL albums that were basically scrapped. Even though Dead man walking did contain a lot of the Doggfather era songs....he had a full album for Tha Last Meal that had amazing songs like "Back up ho" and "Pop yo collar"...and he had two full albums for Paid da cost to be the boss, where they only shared 5-6 songs. Tracks like "Reunion" and the Fred Wreck one with Tha Eastsidaz where he randomly says "Suge Knight is a fat bitch. Hahahaha!" It also had a song where he flips Janet "Funny how time flies" which was probably rejected by the label for being too soft or positive bc it was about his wife.

...Mobb Deep still got a deep catalog of unreleased songs that's still only available thru various mixtapes & mix-cds only but if you got any of the cds listed below, than that's a bulk of their so-called lost tapes catalog which is more than what Nas has released officially.

"Free Agents (the bonus disc is better than the actual album)", "Infamous Archives (it's a double disc)", "QB Veterans", "The Cutting Room Floor: 1st Infantry Mixtape Vol.1", "Mobb Misses Part 2"

That would be maybe as good as his albums

choose your favorites from:

Home (Original)
Flight School
Back To Basics (feat. Common)
White Dress (Original)
Grammy Family
Bittersweet
Mama's Boyfriend
Dreamkillers
Changing Lanes
You Know
Christian Dior Denim Flow
Go Hard
Good Friday
Take One For The Team
Chain Heavy
So Soulful
Apologize
Make It Better

plus some features that are basically Kanye songs (Kanye style production, chorus, and 16+ bars from Kanye) :

Still Dreaming with Nas
They Say or Southside with Common
Live Fast, Die Young with Rick Ross
Alright with Twista
I See Now with Little Brother

Whittle that down to your favorite 12-14 and you have an amazing b-sides album

They released two tapes worth of "lost" material/demos through their website back in '97/'98. They've since re-released the "best" of them on a pair of "Hiero Oldies" CDs.

Other artists have done it too, but on a smaller level. Masta Ace released a vinyl EP's worth of stuff in the early '00s as well.

>1. Are there any other artist that has Lost Tapes material
>that you wish you could hear? Maybe you heard songs and wished
>they were put together for official release.

Mobb Deep would be good. The Roots, as already mentioned. I know the Beatnuts recorded dozens of tracks during the "Street Level" period, which were chopped down to like 16 tracks. Most of Ras Kass' old material has surfaced, but I'd still like to hear "maginary Crimes" and the "Drama" remix, both of which appear to have been truly lost. There's others, I'm sure, but it's sorta escaping me now. Most of what I'd like are whole albums from artists in mid '90s era who dropped a 12" or two, and then the label folded.

>2. What do artist have so much unreleased material? Is it
>sample clearance issues, money etc..

Sample clearance is big. Sometimes they think it just doesn't work.

>3. Are you a fan of Nas Lost Tapes? Could more songs have been
>added?

Yes, I very much am. Lots of stuff could have been added, but I think he was just focusing on those "I am..."/"Nastradamus" sessions. I'd still like to hear a mastered version of "Understanding."

I agree with pretty much everything you said. I would like to hear any tracks from the Stillmatic recordings. He probably left off 3-4 great tracks ...

Any unreleased joints from the Mm..Food/Madvillainy/Dangerdoom/Special Herbs era would be interesting to hear. It'd also be be nice to have that DOOMSTARKS material finally see the light of day.

Also: if that Impossible Mission mix tape that De La put out a while back is any indication, they're probably sitting on a bunch of heat.

There is not a single mc that has as good of an unreleased collection of songs.

You can probably make 3 albums worth of unreleased Nas material that would be better than pretty much any 3 albums from any other MC.

Now if you're simply asking what other mc probably has a lot of good unreleased material then I'm sure there are some and some have been mentioned.

In response to Reply # 48

is prolific but very often not the best judge of his own work.

That's why 'Lost Tapes' is actually in the argument for his best album outside Illmatic.

It's hard to give a ton of props to Nas for having 'Doo Rags' on the shelf but then having it be better than almost the entire 'I Am' album.

It's similar with Dylan's Basement Tapes/Bootleg Series volume lurking for decades but for some reason he released a double-length album of slop in 'Self Portrait' back in 1970.

I could make a mix of Prince b-sides or side-hustle jams that can stand next to any album he made including Sign O' The Times (and even that double-album classic only came out as is because they wouldn't let him make the triple he had planned......which led him down the Lovesexy/BlackAlbum road of confusion & away from relevance).

All three are genius-level talents in their genre but their unreleased catalog's strength also reveals some of the 'big picture' weakness that they've at times lacked in how their proper-studio-material was presented.

There's loads of great shit with all three but you gotta fully invest & work for it yourself while dismissing some of the decisions made along the way in a 'that's just Nas, Dylan's an enigma, Prince gives no fucks' kinda way.
