"Record label somehow didn't think "Blurred Lines" was that good.(swipe)"

Further proof that labels can't judge anything just slightly out the box. They wouldn't even pay for the music video! weird. Did the internet really kill the music industry or was it the label heads' refusal to take risk?

http://music.yahoo.com/news/boy-just-wants-fun-thicke-loosens-143438778.html

NEW YORK (AP) — Robin Thicke is enjoying a pop culture moment with the upbeat Marvin Gaye-esque single "Blurred Lines," but the song didn't click with his record label when he previewed it last summer.

"The record company didn't get it. They didn't even pay for the video. They didn't want to support it at all. Remy Martin paid for the video," said the 36-year-old crooner, who is a spokesperson for the liquor brand with his wife, actress Paula Patton. "And as soon as the record company saw the video, they said, 'This is a smash.'"

The ubiquitous "Blurred Lines" is the longest-running No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this year with nine weeks on top. The video — the unrated version with nude models prowling was banned from YouTube — has more than 125 million views. The title track from Thicke's fifth album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart this week after selling 177,000 copies units, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Thicke mostly wrote and produced the album, released by Universal Music's Interscope Records, with assists from will.i.am, Dr. Luke, Timbaland and Pharrell, his frequent collaborator since 2006. The 11-track set features a funkier, up-tempo sound that's somewhat of a departure for the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, best known for his bedroom grooves "Lost Without U" and "Sex Therapy."

In an interview with The Associated Press, Thicke talked about the song's success, switching up his style and what's up next.

AP: Did "Blurred Lines" sound like a hit to you?

Thicke: It did to me, and then I went into the record label and I played it for the heads of the label, head of pop radio ... and everybody just went, 'Nice. Nice.' Got no response; was kind of surprised by that. A few months later went back in, played it again like, 'I think we have enough records here. I think we've got four or five really strong singles' — or at least four or five options for singles.

AP: How does it feel now that the song is a smash around the world?

Thicke: (Puts up middle finger and laughs.) Nah, I'm just kidding.

AP: Did you finish recording the album before "Blurred Lines" took off?

Thicke: I always write about 40 or 50 songs per album. I had some stuff that I normally write — some slower, soulful, more depressing in some ways, introspective-type stuff. 'Blurred Lines' started to take off ... so I went in the studio and I recorded three new songs that were up-tempo and funk.

AP: Why do you think the song is connecting with so many people?

Robin: The reason why 'Blurred Lines' is breaking records is because rarely do you have a song playing on all pop stations and all black stations, all of the urban stations. And because I have an urban fan base and urban audience, I wonder if it was a brand-new artist, would they play ('Blurred Lines') on black radio? I don't think so. They might not. ... Someone was like, 'It's like (OutKast's) "Hey Ya!'"

AP: How do you think the naked video helped push the song to the top of the charts?

Thicke: I had just enough fans to get some people into it at the beginning, and then the naked video was just so good, it was kind of the thing people immediately say, 'Have you seen this?' — which is kind of what (director) Diane (Martel) wanted to do. She's been loving my music for 10 years, she's like, 'I can't believe you're not a bigger star.' ... She said, 'I think if ... we do a funny, silly video with topless girls, everybody's going to have to know who Robin Thicke is.'

AP: After all of the success, do you feel different?

Thicke: Absolutely. I went into the album with all kinds things in my head like, 'Why didn't my last album sell? How come?' I guess I need to freshen it up. I need to take some chances. I need to do something new. ... So I did want to push the boundaries and work with some hitmakers to see if they could help me and luckily it all worked out. But the good thing is I didn't have to change who I am and what I like. And I almost did. I sang a couple songs I would not have been proud of if I released them.

AP: What are your thoughts on the controversy (some critics called the video and lyrics offensive to women)?

Thicke: For all the controversy and all this other stuff that people try to make it seem like that's more important, what's really important about music and entertainment is to entertain and make people feel good.

AP: Your past albums were less playful and deeper in content than "Blurred Lines." How did you loosen up?

Thicke: I loved the albums just the way they are. I have no regrets ... but I figured I don't want to be one thing; I have to take some chances.

AP: What's next?

Thicke: I want to get right in the studio. I want to make a country album, a Christmas album, a gospel album. I'm like finally! I'm ready to make four albums right now.

out now that is more solid that you would've put money behind were you a label head. Not attacking, just wondering what else on the landscape was influencing their thinking.

I dont even listen to the song when I hear it. It's just not interesting. These artists have music that is waaaaay better than this single: Omar, Bobby V, Sandra St. Victor, Maysa, etc. See Warren Coolidge's New Soul 2013 post.

It's just the perfect storm.

If another artist who wasn't him or JT made it, it wouldn't get any love. If a Noel Gourdin or something made it, at best, it would get play on 35+ aimed Black R&B stations. If it was a "Whiter" artist, or even a Mayer Hawthorne who hasn't hit the Black crowds yet, it would get Pop play but not on Black radio. And then Pharrell being there gives it appeal to both sides as well.

with him being on that BET show, they weren't willing to even pay for the video? Even if they thought it was just going to be a R&B hit, it's weird to not push it.

You right tho, only he or JT could get this on the radio, which is another problem that is the labels fault and has nothing to do with technology.

Last year, there was nothing like a Suit & Tie. Shit even Adorn didn't blow til later in the year. So last summer, there was like NO R&B hits. And anything close was usually Rap related. So this song probably sounded like a huge, huge huge gamble.

But seeing the success of Suit & Tie HAD TO open up this door.

it wasn't a hit, likely because he doesn't have the Black audience that Robin Thicke has.

I did think it was funny that RT and Pharrell came out with a "Got to Give it Up" song after he worked with MH and knowing that MH had a song like that...

and Mayer still can't sing. Not that RT is much in the singing stakes either...

Its success is more down to it standing out like a sore thumb whilst R&B in the States still stands for a black singer over some lame dance beat. I'm all for real R&B coming back...

Blurred Lines ain't no classic though.

the falsetto was kinda shaky at first. to me, it's cuz he brought it down too low. but that was all part of the style and charm.

but now, on "where does this door go," his voice is STRONG. he's found the right notes and it cuts right through the mix.

and had no real chorus. Thicke had a boyish charm coming through his song, and the 'hey hey hey' and 'you the finest bitch in this place' are things everyone can sing out. With Hawthorne, you can perhaps mumble the title to the person you dancing with.

AND THIS SONG GOT A VIDEO!

I understand the label's reticence due to the style of song, but Thicke's song had intrinsic elements and structure to make it a popular song.

Where the Robin Thicke Video elevated the song by capturing the fun and whimsy of the song, This Mayer Hawthorne video is cheesy and makes the song sound like music in a commercial (without the video though its a tight groove).

in news sites that exposed it to audiences that don't listen to the radio everyday. It gave it an edge it didn't have before. Can't remember the last time a video succeeded in doing that.

Even smaller acts like Action Bronson or Blu or The Underachievers make money by promoting or being sponsored by brands like LRG, Scion or Mishka. Its a "new model" under the neoliberal music market place.

A year ago this record wouldnt have done the same thing....

It benefits from an radio environment that JT and the Daft Punk record created. I doubt Atlantic thought Treasure was a smash UNTIL... "Get Lucky" and "Blurred Lines"

That there were a couple of good 'organic' sounding r&b that hit that paved the way for 'blurred lines'. I still feel that chorus and 'hey hey hey' refrain were enough to pull the trigger on it. It would have been a modest hit no matter the climate. JT and as the above poster added, the video, is what propelled it to number one.

Driving around LA with my lady yesterday, her cd player is broke, listening to pop radio "Take Back The Night", "Blurred Line", "Get Lucky" and "Treasure" got played back to back to back or near each other a good three times.

I'm good with that because I like or love all four songs. JT def opened that door and I ain't mad. Hopefully some Black artist are allowed to tap back into the roots of R&B without being ignored or shelved.

And lol at some of you unable to admit without a sidebar that you like/enjoy the song. God damn you're allowed to like a popular somg here and there.

But I don't think it's necessarily only wanting Mike. It also has to do with the oontz, trap, hiphop&B, made for the club R&B is just tired.

We saw Frank Ocean, Miguel, and The Weeknd makes some waves/changes last year, even on popular radio, and with Haitus Kioyte getting signed recently, hopefully popular R&B has more changes coming soon

The record companies ain't got no money anymore.

Most big budget, major label vids from the last few years have been financed by a corporation and/or brand.

Yea I mean my last Kidz In The Hall vids were paid in full or partially by brands or the grass roots marketing companies repping them.

Makes sense. It's not that labels dont have money. They just dont want to spend it.

Makes me wonder if its the song or pop radio programming that made it a hit.

If I worked for a label I prolly would have paid for the video since it was uptempo RT but I wouldnt have expected it to this big of a hit.

The Marvin Gaye sample makes you move and it sounds like they had fun making the record.

Labels are pretty stupid but Im not mad at them for being stingy at an up tempo RT song.

Im not buying the JT door opening bullsh either. I like Suit and Tie and appreciate JT making what he wants instead of following trends... that being said. He aint got shit to do with this record blowing up... this is all Marvin, Pharrell, RT and whoever else helped put it together. If JT didnt drop this year Blurred Lines would still be a hit.

Yeah I know the original sample is a Marvin Gaye sample ("Got To Give It Up") which is wow a lot of older listeners are digging it but I can't help that they (Pharrell) purposely tried to make a cheesy version of the "Saturday Night (Remix)" cause they could.

I'll give Skateboard P credit here though, I think his Blurred arrangement is different enough for him to have crafted it on his own (plus the story goes that Thicke told P that "Got To Give It Up" was his favorite song and then P cooked up something reminiscent of it). That is a nice joint from Jay Dee though...often overlooked....

money behind him.

look Thicke been in the same boat as Eric Benet however being White and having that last name has kept him afloat.

that corny song is what always hits period.

not shocked or surprised i mean the cat been around 20 years and he needs every kind of gimmick and trick to finally hit.

tired of his fake Generic jive turkey Culture Bandit self.

broke Michael Jackson wannabe who while he has some talent, he just is too limited and too wack. i bet cash money unless he stays gimmicky he won't have another big hit.

There was no big risk taken on this record.

The basics of this song is Marvin's Gayes Got to Give it up which is played at every wedding that I have ever been too..

Then pharrell adds in the michael scream... the hey hey hey elements make it catchy something for people to lock in on...

then you add a verse from T.I. to make it official

this should have been a no brainer for any record exec////

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

In the way it mainstreamed non EDM "uptempo" on US R&B charts yeah.. I put uptempo into quotes because 102 bpm really isn't uptempo historically. That was more common for cuts like Gap Band's Outstanding not true dance floor jams. From the mid 90s it's been one big slow down in tempo aside from the occasional offering from the south and those flying 135+ type beats. If you only heard radio and the clubs here you'd think jams like Blurred Lines didn't exist anymore.. When the full reality is the R&B charts in the states have been behind for sometime now and aren't fully indicative of what's going on around the world. There have been a whole lot of cuts that hit the old 120-128bpm sweet spot over the last 2-4 years but they just haven't been given any real attention or push here (let's give some credit to R Kelly who dropped a true uptempo cut with Share My Love before either Suit & Tie or Blurred Lines) R&B in the states has become like Fox News imo... what I mean by that is Fox always rates #1 when you compare it to other news networks but it's really just a majority minority when you take everyone watching TV into account. With internet radio & smart phones in play now you have so many more people taking music from different sources that I really can't look at something like the R&B/Hip Hop chart in the states and say "This is what's hot right now". It's only what's hot among a sliver of the music consuming public. I highly doubt an artist like Thicke has been oblivious to what's going on outside of this small corner of the music world.. after hearing the shit he's doing on this album it's pretty clear to me he's been listening to a much broader spectrum than those folks that helped push his song to #1. And I don't think it's a coincidence Pharrell works with a act like DP, who is fully amerced in the scene I'm talking about, and has a hand in Thicke's Blurred Lines. It's time we get over ourselves and realize the US and it's charts aren't driving the music world like it once was.

and props to you for you acknowledging R.kelly "Share my Love" which harked back to that Barry White/Teddy Pendergrass vibe.

everybody knows Marvin Gaye's "got to give it up" was the basis and central part of that track along with a MJ vocal throw in from Pharell and a Fat ALbert Hey,Hey,Hey opening. a catchy corny gimmicky that worked.

put it like this if a A White Artist does a tradional sounding track ala Suit and tie or blurred lines then its a hit, let a Black Artist do it and it barely makes a dent.

double standard 101 and i still say THicke and TImberlake are culture Bandits just getting a Budget to make liteweight MJ knockoff 3rd tier tracks.

mistermaxxx R.Kelly, Michael Jackson,Stevie wonder,Rick James,Marvin Gaye,El Debarge, Barry WHite Lionel RIchie,Isleys EWF,Lady T.,Kid creole and coconuts,the crusaders,kc sunshine band,bee gees,jW,sd,NE,JB

Miami Heat, New York Yankees, buffalo bills

And it has none of the sample. But truth be told the bonus cut Pressure is the best thing on the album imo. You don't feel the album that's cool... personally I like about 80% of it... but when it's bad it's real bad.

How many recent Uk Number 1's can you name at 98-120bpm though? It's not JUST the US.. the slow uptick(downtick from 128) in tempo has been happening everywhere.

moombahton, jumpstyle the wierd hip hop dubstep 100bpm (koan sound type shit) have all existed in the space but it wasnt until the resurgence or garage/2-step that the bpm's for big records have fallen in this space...

rereading what i typed I can see how it sounds like that though. But I'm talking more about the underground scene and all the splinter genres that have sprung up all over the world. I just don't think anyone serious about music is taking their listening orders from these mainstream charts. Much the same as network TV still pulls bigger ratings than cable TV.. but everyone knows network TV programming quality isn't seeing an HBO or AMC
