bought myself a PS2 with Smuggler's Run on release night, then an iPod when that dropped.

man iPods were bad news though. I went through like four in HS, I spent a lot of what little money I had on those things. pretty sure that first one went through a washer and dryer.

It was a good year for me: College Dropout, The Grind Date, Tipping Point, Tha Carter, Long Hot Summer, Connected, Madvillainy, Viktor Vaughn-Venomous Villain, MURS 316, Jean Grae-This Week, The Black Album, Conversations With Dudley, True Notes Vol.1, MM Food, Joyful Rebellion

BUT, I remember bumping College Dropout & Get Rich Or Die Trying non-stop pretty much the whole year on my iPod.

I remember seeing something on KTLA9 about Shaq buying iPods for everyone on the Lakers...when they explained that shit? you could hold how much music on it? I saved up birthday $, Christmas gift cards, & birthday $ from my next year to get myself one.

Blueprint 2/Blueprint 2.1
Lost Tapes
God's Son (maybe had more impact on me than any album ever. I lost my mom the year before and this was the soundtrack for this whole year)
I Phantom
Diplomatic Immunity
Get Rich Or Die Tryin (never loved this album, always thought the Massacre was better)
Philadelphia Freeway
Phrenology
Electric Circus (never got into this)
Snoop Dogg - Paid the Cost to be Da Boss (Beautiful!)
Gang Starr - The Ownerz (came out right after school finished up)
K-Os - Exit (I don't know when this came out but I bought it the same day as the Ownerz)

random songs:
Ras Kass - Catch Me If You Can (I remember he came out with this...he was on the run for a month or two which let to the first jail stint. He also had the freestyle over the Dipset song which was sick)
Alchemist/Twin - Different Worlds (final version didn't come out until I think two years later but I distinctly remember this song with the original beat at this time)

96-97 was a good year too but after pac and biggie it basically got stamped as the year of puff. i remember my first biology test kicked my ass and i went out and bought "one day it will all make sense." summer ended with miseducation.

but we did get deja vu in the winter. i'll always love deja vu.

destiny's child and usher broke but the year before was better for r&b. rock and pop were weird

First of all, I was still bumping D.O.C.'s "No One Can Do It Better" and BDP's "Ghetto Music," even though both dropped the summer before school. And even though it dropped in the summer, I got up on EPMD's "Unfinished Business" album a little late. Like in December or so.

Other than that, I spent that school year bumping, in vague chrnological order:

Ice-T - The Iceberg
Donald-D - Notorious
Sir Mix A Lot - Seminar
Big Daddy Kane - It's a Big Daddy Thing
3rd Bass - The Cactus Album
MC Lyte - Eyes on This
Queen Latifah - All Hail to the Queen
Above the Law - Livin Like Hustlers
