Both my parents--my casual music fan mother and DJ dad alike--were big fans.

Come 7th grade, I played my mom's Best of Sade CD and been hooked ever since.

She, Meshell and Badu are my 'holy trinity' of female artists.

probably most recently Erykah.

..but also Nina Simone, Aretha, etc.

If anyone is so interested, there's a sorta indie folk/rock artist named Kristin Hersh, who is pretty great. She is kinda an acquired taste....she is diagnosed as bipolar. Her live shows are actually really (intentionally) funny...and she can be a really intense performer.

Badu and Jilly are close though. PJ Harvey has crept up recently too.

I have been listening to a lot of oldies radio for a while so she would probably be the one, especially since she has had hits from the mid-70's to mid-80's that I heard a lot then (I know she has had hits from before the mid-70's but I was too little in 71-74).
