Sorry, but at the time they came out, I had an east coast bias and hated all of it. And now I'm too old to re access the records because I don't want to spend my time listening to (mental) teenagers rap about being miserable human beings.

"Chronic" is basically decent at it's best, yeah everyone praised it and got on the bandwagon but not me, I ignored it (except for when J.Durpi & K.K. did their "Bomb" which was better) and couldn't wait for the G-Funk sound to die off.

I think the fact that I heard almost every Parliament & Funkadelic album growing up around one of my uncles, that I was wore out from every hearing those groups music even when being sampled.

I've very recently come around to appreciating it way more. I still don't think it's a top tier classic a la Chronic or Illmatic but I find that it's Jay's most cohesive-sounding effort as far as the production and theme and sound are concerned. Lyrically he was really solid too even if I consider him a B-level MC compared to the other greats.

drab dark beats that go nowhere made during a bad drug binge by Hav set the stage for an extremely mediocre album praised by many

i dont like his personality or how complicated he tries to make shit all to ultimately say nothing...at least ghost has heart & another side to his personality, Rae just seems like a self-absorbed bully

Ironman & Liquid Swords are better records to me

now Rza did his thing w/ the chops for the most part, Criminology/Verbal Intercourse & Ice Cream are classics but Raekwon ruins the overall product imo, for me anyway

edit: random aside...listening to Daytona 500 in a dorm room fall 96, Rae says "i say peace to cats who rock mac knowledge knowledges", one of my smoking buddies furrows his brow & says "that's not why the father gave us those lessons..."

also i didn't say what he says doesn't make sense just that he spends a lot of rhyme energy "coding" things that are actually pretty simple & basic sentiments or ideas (mostly about money or supremacy of some sort over others)

but i know, rap dudes think they're "deep", yeah...

actually being deep. its suppose to sound good and fly over the track

Rae makes talking about money, women, clothes, and his hood memories sound cool as fuck and his patterns (in particular the internal rhyme schemes) are near unfukwitable

and i like depth, i don't really do pseudo-depth for the sake of flyness or what have you, but to each his own

Rae's just not a likable guy to me...that typically ruins my ability to enjoy an mc *shrug*

they had a minimum security unit & like i'd literally walk in there among the inmates to fill up the machines, right?

so i had a kinda old pair of 996s that i wore for work, they weren't too ran over...

so one day im filling up the machines & this cat sidles up to me (normally they did that to ask for a hook up) & he looks me all serious in my face like "where you get them shoes?"

i was like "uh, up in Maryland"

he was like "ok"

only later was i like, yo these shoes must have some hood significance im unaware of...

Wow, you're buggin' out.

I actually knew exactly what BB was talking about in regards to the 3rd best Tribe album but you just pooped in the best album in the Wu canon,

No bueno, bruh.

Yeah, Del was a little too bitchy for my liking.

Some strong joints on this album, but there are a number of cuts that are so bland to me.

I get it that Del's style is a little too "boho" for some folks for an entire album. I just still love that record so much and play it all the time even 20 years later.

I've never been fan of El-P as a rapper. As a producer he had some stuff that I dug but I have to say these past 2 albums with him and Killer Mike have me going back to see if maybe this time around I'll like some of that Company Flow and other El-P related stuff more.

Album is solid but not classic like most people here think. There are maybe 5 tracks on that album that i still listen to. Mos BOBS and RF's Train of Thought are better albums IMO.

In response to Reply # 0

i listened to it when it first came out after being a Soulquarian stan back in the late 90's / early 00's and it just either went over my head or I just didn't like the album.

i'm kind of ashamed to name this here, given how influential the owner of the site was in making this album, but Voodoo just didn't hit me like it seemed to hit others.

I like the album but I don't think it's as great as people say.

I feel it benefited a little from Wu's fall-off like the same way Stillmatic did.

It's definitely a dope album but Ironman is clearly the better album to me.

And it's always ranked up there with the Top 5 of its decade and I just don't think it's that high.
