"10 Song Albums: Wish we could go back to these days man!"

I was putting some things in storage and looked at some of my old albums, records, tapes etc. I noticed some of my favorite albums had 9-10 songs on it. Less room for error, you couldnt be lazy, no filler, no skits....hit play and a song came on....9-10 songs later the album was over. Even some R&B/Soul/Pop was like that. Run DMC Self Title, Paid In Full, By All Means Necessary, Illmatic, I believe 36 Chambers had like 11 songs. Even Common tried with BE and though it's not a classic, he left bad songs off. (I believe Off The Wall, Thriller and a few Marvin Gaye albums had 10 tracks)......So...

1. What do you think about 10 song albums?
2. Would you like to see more artist back to this?
3. What type of artist would do well with this?
4. How many tracks is too many for you?
5. Random post comment...

40 minutes yo

the 9-10 song thing really only applies to an album w/ standard "popular" format length songs

to me its more about the overall length of the album (see: madvillainy)

but i agree for the most part. that's why i dig the alternative genre. for the most part they'll give you 10 to 13 tracks at the most.

But with 3, 4, or 5 years in-between albums, it's annoying. Plus, with those 9 to 10 song hip-hop albums back then, you got three or sometimes even four verses by your favorite rapper per track. These days, you're lucky to get two.

And also too many of my favorite albums go over the 10 track mark to agree:

It Takes a Nation
Yo Bumrush the Show
Fear of a Black Planet
De La Soul is Dead
3 Feet High and Rising
Low End Theory
Midnight Marauders
AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted
Death Certificate
Mecca and the Soul Brother
Main Ingredient
Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
Done By Forces of Nature
Cypress Hill
Cold Vein
Only Built For Cuban Linx
Liquid Swords
Supreme Clientele
Business as Usual
Dare Iz a Darkside
Edutainment
Ghetto Music: The Blueprint
The Chronic
Straight Outta Compton
Doggy Style
The first four Outkast albums

And that's just off the top of the head. And for just about all of those, I wouldn't really change anything on them.

>1. What do you think about 10 song albums?

Of the ones that are great, their brevity isn't what make them great.

>2. Would you like to see more artist back to this?

Only if there's a commitment to producing/releasing more music regularly. And, oddly enough, now is a good time for that.

>3. What type of artist would do well with this?
>4. How many tracks is too many for you?

As long as the tracks are dope, I don't care how many there are. You can never have too much of a good thing.

Besides a couple of token mentions of Off the Wall and What's Going On at the end.

Also, I don't believe the >>>10 songs and/or >>>45 minutes thing is really a "thing" outside of hip-hop. At least with the stuff I buy in the soul or even rock genres.

and back in the day acts got it right by picking the best songs and the right amount. the CD era made folks have to add filler and by track 12 its was usually a snoozefest.

anyway i like the fact that it was like that back in the day. i think the record companys got greedy and it hurt the artists with just filling up a CD

Not just Hip Hop but most rock, blues, pop, etc records are better when they are more condensed. 10-12 songs 40-50 minutes. The reality is that most artists no mater who they are don't have 17 quality songs at one time. Nowadays with mixtapes, guest appearances there are plenty of ways to stay on people's mind without having an album with a ton of songs on there. RAP Music & Run The Jewels are the most recent examples that I can think of with of really tight, concise albums that wouldn't be as good as they are if they felt the need to throw in an extra 4 or 5 songs that everyone would end up skipping anyways. Plus I've always believed in the theory that you would rather leave the audience wanting more than saying damn this is fucking long.

Hence why sequencing is so key.
There's an art to picking the songs to (re) start the 2nd side.
Kinda like the 2nd act.
That's the part of the album listening experience I miss these days.

AND, it's why I listen to songs I might not like.
Sounds corny, but I like to "feel" the ups and down an album might have.
That way I absorb it as one piece of art.
I get the entire point.

>1. What do you think about 10 song albums?

I'm all for quality over quantity. so yes.
>2. Would you like to see more artist back to this?

Yes. Although, to be honest, I don't think most popular current hip hop artists can even do a great 10 song album.
>3. What type of artist would do well with this?

Underground people. Although...speaking from a critical perspective, if all artists did 10 song albums...with an artist like Nikki Minaj, it would be an improvement. You would get 10 shitty songs as opposed to 18-20.
>4. How many tracks is too many for you?

I think most artists peter out around 13-14.
>5. Random post comment...

Basically album length increased when CDs (and increased prices) came into play. This came at the expense of quality. Now that CDs are dying/dead, it's just about the artist's ego.

In response to Reply # 0

>1. What do you think about 10 song albums?

I don't mind albums that are 10 to 12 songs but it all depends on different factors, cause back in the day cds were still expensive compared to today but now prices have dropped on albums that are short, and I got to feel like I'm getting my money's worth if I'm spending $15 & more for an album.

Also so artists don't release albums often so if they put out an album that's pretty long then I'm going to enjoy it cause you're not sure when the next time they will release a new one and if the music is good you're going to like it more over time even the not-so-good songs, so I don't complain about those factors.

Certain genres of music such as edm you want long albums cause it's for party and enjoyment, most of the time the songs on dance albums are long anyways and when you have 8-10 five to ten minute songs, it would already be at the 74 to 79 minute mark. With r&b those albums need to be short cause most of the songs are pretty much slow and will get boring after the 3 minute mark especially when most r&b & rock songs are nothing but repetitive choruses & simple beats unlike back in the day when r&b had intros, breakdowns, chord progression, and good writing on lyrics.

>2. Would you like to see more artist back to this?

Go back to doing short albums, no not really; with rock, I'm a big 80's listener and most of the albums were all 8 to 12 songs deep but the length of most of the songs were 3 to 6 minutes long but like I said before not all artists did an albums worth of simple pop tunes, only one or two songs were played that way while the rest were compositions that had breakdowns, solos, chord changes, & etc so you didn't feel bored. Also bands would give each album a theme sound-wise so the album would be different from their next album so you didn't mind if it was long or short.

>3. What type of artist would do well with this?

I will have to admit if Redman & Busta Rhymes were releasing albums every year then I think they would benefit from doing short albums but since they don't I think it's good they do 15 to 20 songs per album.

>4. How many tracks is too many for you?

I'm not picky the more the better cause I can always skip a track, unlike back in the day when you had cassettes and couldn't skip within a second.
