MJ started w/Motown and moved to CBS.

Miles started w/i dunno...Prestige? then moved to Columbia. then to Warner Brothers.

>sade still with Sony for almost 30 years.

yeah.

>Madonna was with Warners for 20 plus years.

yeah but she doesn't count either b/c she left and is w/Live Nation now.

>Smokey Robinson with Motown for a long long long time

sure. but he did leave for SBK briefly, so he doesn't count.

i mean, all of these acts spent a long time w/one label and that's something. but i wonder specifically if there are more acts like Stevie who've spent a long career signed exclusively to one label for the duration. i can't think of any. you listed Sade - she's one.

fuck you.

w/one record label.

you named acts who spent a long time w/one label but then signed w/another. some did that more than once.

they're not who i'm looking for.

and clearly there's no conspiracy or clique behind this post. i literally thought of it the other day while i was cleaning my bathroom and listening to Stevie's 'Looking Back' album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Looking_Back_%28Stevie_Wonder_album%29). i couldn't think of other acts who've spent the entirety (key word) of a long career (key phrase) signed exclusively with one record label. so i made this post figuring you ppl could name some others. you named Whitney. she counts.

fuck you.

That's 33 years. Trying to think of another one.

Overall, these things are complicated because labels gets bought all the time and sometimes, the old label just remains as a logo but they can also be prefectly active with their own staff, A&R's etc. Other times, a label just stops using a subsidiary and transfer all the acts to its motherlabel that might actually have been calling the shots all the time except just at the beginning before act X got signed.

But yes, the MJ/Sony thing is a good example because Sony didn't own CBS originally to my knowledge and then you also have the distinctions (is there one?) between Columbia and CBS and Epic and lots of other shit.

There's also the issue of records being reissued at the times by the new owner and without the old label-imprint. Other times, that particular acts back-catalog might be owned by another label and blah-blah; it's easy to get confused and I always found it a big mess. For example, how many people today know that Slayer of all bands was on Def Jam during their most celebrated years? The reissues show the American imprint...

it's not that deep.

i say Stevie has been w/Motown since 1961 though many of his records were actually released by Tamla, which is a subsidiary label in the Motown family. or, it was b/c Tamla is gone now. and since Stevie has been w/the label its ownership has changed hands several times - from Berry Gordy to MCA to Polygram to Seagrams to Universal.

>But yes, the MJ/Sony thing is a good example because Sony
>didn't own CBS originally to my knowledge and then you also

MJ doesn't count b/c he has been w/more than one label - Motown to Epic (CBS/Sony). that's 2.

again, what i'm talking about is not this deep.

A quick Internet search says yes. Not sure when he was signed, but earliest recording sessions began in 1984, 'Radio' was released in 1985, and his last Def Jam project, 'Exit 13' was released in 2008.

So, 23/24 years with Def Jam (that is, assuming the Def Jam contract ended soon after the 2008 release) until his latest project this year on another label, 429 Records.

pretty sure he's done everything prior to 2007 under some wing of EMI, though it's shifted around a little through the years.

I spose his first Firemen project probably wasn't an EMI release.

Wikipedia (I know, but it's source-cited to several places) says Clive Davis signed her in 1983. Her first album, 'Whitney Houston,' dropped in '85. And although her last album, 'I Look To You' was released in 2009, I'm assuming she was still signed at the time of her death in 2012.

That's a 29-year run at Arista, unless there's something I'm missing.
