"Let's talk about Rahsaan Patterson"

He's on his 7th album now (I guess), dude appears to me as one of the most underrated soul singer of the 2000's, his After Hours, Wines & Spirits, Bleuphoria run was pretty solid and the last one (Bleuphoria) was great, nice mix of uptempo and ballad but it didn't really grab the attention of the public. Live, he's phenomenal vocally, his improvisation skills are impressive.

So Im wondering, do people remember him ? Is there any fan of his music here ? What's your fav album from him ? Your fav song ?

Can't forget Brother Patterson. Because me and some my boys are horrible, we've always called him Fruity Patterson. But really...it ain't like I dug his music any less. I buy pretty much everything he drops if I find out about it.

Of course I agree that he is vocally super nice...and in a more nuanced way than he gets credit for. I liked his 2nd album the most. Like...the best songs on there might be my favorites of his. After Hours was slammin too...it is unfortunate that he was viewed as 'over with' by then, because I think that should've been his 'hit' album. The first album is kinda him doing what he probably had to do to get the album released. He's so strong vocally that he carried several of those songs too. Spend the night and One More Night are still my jams.

For my money, him and Van Hunt should be locked in a room and forced to record an entire album together. That would work like hell for me. The stuff they did together was almost all dope.

He kinda got lumped in with Badu, Maxwell, and D in neo soul grouping of the mid to late 90s. And he is his own thing. And I'm sure him being gay didn't help him in the states either. I assume he's beloved overseas...which kinda explains his later work. Lots of it is less 'typical' R&B and a little more on the euro/squirrelly side. And wasn't he the lead vocal with a side project too? Sugarsomething...I bought that too!

Him and Van Hunt is a perfect ccombo, the songs they've made together are pretty good.

I don't know if he's loved overseas, I feel like he's pretty underground in Paris too, everytime he comes the venue is full but he doesnt come that often. I'd like to know if he's well known elsewhere in Europe.

I gotta catch up. Dude makes great music.

You won't regret it, this album is great, it has that 80's synth vibe but it doesn't sound totally throwback.

After Hours is my favorite.

On his self titled album the first 6 songs are jams and then Can We Wait A Minute comes on. I think that opening could go up against anybody.

Sure Boy and So Right and It's Alright Now are standouts on Love and Stereo.

Wine and Spirits- I LOVE Cloud 9, Pitch Black, and Water. I haven't listened to Bleuphoria all the way thru.

But yeah I'd recommend After Hours to anyone who wants to be put on.

Thanks for talking him up.

straight up John Legend,Miquel, Frank Ocean can't touch this cat musically, problem though is dude ain't got no money cuts and his best stuff is for other acts, however it ain't alot of memorable cuts.

"Stop on By" back in the day was my cut. he just came along with that sound and while he can play and sing, he ain't a threat, just a cat who makes music, however it never goes no ways.

to me he is like a more talented version of Dwele and yet neither one of those cats is seeing a good song let alone a memorable one.

And he's not even at this level at all, to this day he has never hit but he goot songs that could've hit, not big international hit but just R&B classics. It's weird because he was kind of star as a kid and I discovered him as an artist on national TV, his video for for "Where You Are" was aired pretty often in France ...

I interviewed him a few years back and dude was on some broke Prince steeze. The cadence in which he spoke was like the beginning of Computer Blue.

I got to the spot before his rehearsal, and he walked in wearing a black turtleneck and white pants. Later on at the show, he was wearing a black turtleneck and white pants...lol.

When he left the stage, my homegirl asked him what inspired him to write. He paused for about 10 seconds, then said.."....nyaggaaas".

With all that said, dude is a beast. Shoulda been more popular than he was, but I do agree the "gay" thing hurt him..especially in the black community

i mean Sylvester wasn't hurt and he was a big time act in a far more tougher era,etc.. its all about the songs and nothing else period.

he was like sorta seen like Eric Benet in a couple tiers down below.

just didn't have that IT as Artists to blow up.

The Rashaan Pattersons, Raheem DeVaughns, etc still doing the rounds compared to the equivalent in other music genres.

Yes, soul music is timeless so many of the genre's artists--especially the underground ones--can easily have long, durable careers because they are not burden by trends and the like like hip hop or pop artists IMO.

How can one forget him? He's known by those who appreciate uncut singing.

My favorite performance by him happens to be a song I heard him sing at an Atlanta show: Pack my Bags by Chaka Khan. Tore it to shreds...But from his catalog Burnin and Sure Boy are my frequent go to's.

Just last night, I decided that I'll visit RP's discography.

People LOVE the shit out of him but aside from his '90s stuff--which I only have a vague memory of them--I've nevr really explored dude's work.

I'm currently starting with Wine & Spirits. Close 9 is funky as shit.
