"Name an album that you like but wasn't well recieved."

Right now for me it's Cudi's Indicud. It maybe my favorite album of this year because it's the one album I keep going back and listening too.

But what's that one album for you?

So, at best, I would say that there wasn't ever really a general consensus on that album.

I however love it. And always have loved it.

Hated TM when it first dropped, but it's definitely grown on me in recent years. I liked The Ecstatic so much when it came out that I felt motivated to revisit Mos' whole catalogue. TM got heaters.

but mainly your post just reminded me how much I loved their debut when it came out. Nowadays I couldn't picture myself listening to it front to back, but I probably listened to that album at least 100 times in Jr. High

Wooden Leather was pretty good too, I still love that beat Saadiq did for "Work In Progress." I don't think Nappy Roots' music has really stood up to the test of time at all though, overall.

Not to mention the way he totally screwed up "We Can Funk", the one song the die-hards had been praying for a proper release for. He changed the tempo, added George Clinton, and pretty much destroyed that song.

That album was put together about as good as the movie.

Now I still play "Symbol", and I loved Lovesexy and even most of Emancipation..and Come has it's moments, but other than that, up until "AOA", nah...

I feel like I'm about to fall into an episode of The Prince Snobs talking about it.

The good shit:

- "Joy In Repetition": it still sounds 2 years ahead of '90s slow jams it reminds me of... and yet, it's even older than that.

- "Can't Stop This Feeling I've Got" (there are some questionable elements that creep up in this though)

- "Thieves In The Temple": Prince canon on first listen.

- "The Question Of U": weird, quirky Prince that inspires repeat listens.

The OK stuff:

- "Elephants and Flowers": still a little bit of Lovesexy to be found on this one. Disassociate any memories of the movie and this song, though (or the movie in general)

- "Still Would Stand All Time": A slow song that I go back to every now and then, weird enough to keep it out of "Arms of Orion" territory, but still...

- "The Latest Fashion" - yay for Prince & The Time, but dammit, this is a "My Summertime Thang" remix to my ears.

The stuff I'd leave off:

- "We Can Funk". I've heard a version of this that is basically the Graffiti Bridge version w/out all non-Prince vocals. I think it's dope. Not really seeing the '86 version(s), or even what we've "heard" of the original take, but still good. However Prince PEED all over the released version with the ill-fitting George Clinton parts (even though I think that arrangement was made to fit his vocals) and the cringeworthy "I'm testing positive for the funk" lyrics.

- "Tick, Tick, Bang". one of the few '90s Prince songs that at least, until the singing begins, sounds like it belongs in the era... but you know, as this was a remake of another song Prince did way better years before... it's some BULLSHIT!

- "Release It". It's sold as a Time record, but it sure as hell don't sound like The Time. Neither does "Shake". There's a reason why "Jerk Out" was brought out of storage alongside with "Chocolate"... THAT is what The Time sounds like. I think with those two songs, I was ready for Prince to let 'em go do their own thing (as was seen mostly on Pandemonium). "Love Machine" is awkward New Jack Swing.

- "Round and Round". I would have rather heard this on a Tevin album with "The P" (hilarious song).

- "Melody Cool". I don't really hate this song but ...eh, all the non-Prince songs can get 86ed, really.

That old BUUUUUUUUUULLLSHIT:

"New Power Generation" (both parts) are just a window into the kind of corniness that this album didn't deserve. The song just sounds like Prince is grasping at straws to do something new, instead of just doing it like he usually did.

fuck that title track in the GOAT ASS. 2x. Romper Room Prince.

If you took all the non-Prince stuff off the record, added "The Grand Progression" and deleted the bullshit, that would have been a great album.

But instead we got the signal post that Prince was gonna be on some bullshit for a long while.

Yep-Anything post SOTT is always bound to get a sideways look.

But P put out some really solid albums in the 25 years after SOTT.

My top two?

The always polarizing Rainbow Children is his most inspired work and is strong from end to end (if you can get past the subject matter and Wedding Feast)

And 3121 is slept on as well. It's good from end to end with only a couple of missteps.

that is the last in a continuity of non-stop great Prince albums IMO. Although I did not really care for Prince making it one continuous track on the CD version.

as for Symbol and Come, there were moments on both (mostly the former) that made me make the Benson face. I don't think Prince really had his heart in a lot of that '90s Warners material when things started to sour.

and I expanded on Graffiti Bridge in another reply...

It definitely should have been a smash for the late 90's thing.

I like it better than Esthero's "Breath from another" and I like Esthero's Cd a lot.

Working at Tower Records (village NYC) while those 2 Cd's were played regularly in the late 90's was on-point, especially around closing time.

I just really enjoyed it. Not sure why people didn't. I also find that I a general sense responses to albums tend to get far more negative over time. If people are saying an album was "just OK" when I comes out a year later they'll be saying it was horrible.

It was a very good album, I think the fact Brother J. didn't use his own name but instead use his new collective's name is what kind of made this album go unnoticed.

I remember putting "Time To Build" & "Zoneweilders Groove" on my mixtapes back in the day and had a few people ask about who it was but I think that would've happened regardless cause not many knew about or was checking for new material from X-Clan or Brother J.

The album was better lyrically than I expected, and the beats were dope but unfortunately it was on Island Records so it wasn't going to be promoted correctly anyways cause they wasn't good at marketing rap albums.

Has anybody peeped the third X-Clan album "Return From Mecca", I've only heard one song from it but never felt like checking it out even on tubeyou, just never had the time to invest or excitement to do so.

As much as I love that album and feel like a lot of people still haven't heard it, it did sell over a 675,000 copies, so it was received pretty well but it was overlooked cause back then a lot of rap albums were out and going gold off of one single on the radio; infact I think the single "Vivrant Thing" went platinum but I'm not sure.

Never understood the hate that album got, even from Questo himself. There are only about 4 songs on that whole album that I outright don't like (which is more than I can say about the ratio of unlikable songs on the last few Roots projects). Meanwhile, at least 3 of the songs on Tipping Point are among my favorite Roots joints of all time (Boom!, Web, Dindatta).

I agree it's not one of their best albums, i do like it more than some of their recent output but that's mainly because i don't know the newer stuff as well. but when this dropped i played it non stop for a few months.

Not that "You Don't Have To Worry" wasn't a good song, but it was
an album track.

It fit in perfectly with the burgeoning "neo soul" sound (even if it wasn't truly a "neo soul" track) thanks to its strong '70 soul influence. It showcased Jacci McGhee's voice well. And while it had a slick, cinematic sound that made it accessible to the public at large.

You Don't Have to Worry is nice but sounds a tad like a demo IMO. (Come to find out, it kinda was, Jacci was supposed to sing the lead vocals but because of disagreements and a bunch of no-shows, Peter Lord sung them instead...roughly)

a rapper I severely disliked album-wise in the past dropping an album that's already one of my five most played on the year? I'm honestly bummed out more people aren't having this weird epiphany moment I am.

I thought it was a dope party record. I think the hate for that record was based on people wanting to keep Com in a boom bap box. I thought the old school flows with the electronic beats was a dope juxtaposition. I still rock that album.

I remember it as getting pretty lukewarm reviews. While the album contains a bit too many R&B-crossover type songs to be truly great, the more "pure" songs on the record are almost uniformly dope and some of my favorite Ghostface shit ever; DEFINITELY stronger songs than the more well-received "Fishscale" even if the latter is better as a whole.

And had all the deleted songs that leaked out ended up on the album, shit would have been *great* as well...

After Jewelz I was an OC fan for life but otheer than like 2 tracks (Bounce Mission being one) I thought it was a pretty good record.

It wasn't as good as Word...Life or Jewelz but too many people confuse "not as good as previous efforts" with "bad album".

It wasn't his best but it wasn't bad.

Some real dope feel good joints on there.

I put it in a different order and omitted the skits I didn't like and I listened to THAT all the time. The delay, horrible sequencing, and the singles hurt Meth something terrible. But shiiit...Sweet Love, Torture, Dangerous Ground, really anything with Street on it was over the top jamming. I need to find that resequenced joint and throw it on.

I love Phonte as a rapper and artist...I really wanted to like the album more than I did. The first 5 songs start off the album so strong...then midway, it kinda peters out. A couple strong tracks near the end... but there just seemed to be something missing....Although I like it, it seemed a little "phoned in", like intentionally giving people what they want...

Don't really care to listen to it now but ten years ago when I was in HS, Phrenology was my shit!

I can see why a lot of Roots devotees wouldn't like it tho. It was partly a crossover attempt to win over rock audiences. Quest admits as much.

The combination of ridiculously hype beats throughout, Ross's infectious hooks and everybody sounding hungry as fuck has led this to being one of my most listened to hip hop albums of recent memory...

Slaughterhouse's first album, solid beats and great rhymes, not entirely sure why it wasn't more liked.

Nas- Hip hop is dead- This album actually has Nas over some of the best production of his career (it's a real shame that Nas and Kanye didn't collaborate more in this time period) and his rhymes are on point.

Pretty much any Smashing Pumpkins album post Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

unfortunately i saw him this weekend at a show, what a disappointment that was.

BEP - Elephunk is album i thoroughly enjoyed it wasn't as bad as their post Elephunk work but you could see that was the direction they were headed. Apl.De.Ap and Taboo still got verses in. don't think i've heard them since.

not sure how this was rated, but Scarface - Balls and My Word is one of my favorite albums (bought it the same day as Elephunk) i never see i mentioned when people discuss Face, it doesn't hold weight compared to his better known records but that shit was still dope.

2Pac - 2Pacalypse now. another one i don't know how most people view it but it's never mentioned when he's discussed, i thought that shit was dope.

Nas - Streets Disciple. i heard a lot of hate on this one, shit was dope.

D12 - D12's World. i didn't hear their first album til a few years after this one, it was the first time i got to see these guys shine on their own.

While it doesn't stand up to her previous two and its the middle third is noticeably weak, this wasn't a bad little release at all IMO.

Both fans and critics hated on it hard tho, especially in the wake of the NYT-fueled backlash.

I got this a while back and was surprised how much I liked it. it seemed like the hip hop brother to D'Angelo's "Voodoo".

GangStarr - The Ownerz

I thought that it was a really dope album but I remember hearing a lot of backlash because of Premo's new style (i.e. stop-n-go beats) I think if it wasn't a follow up to "Moment of Truth", cats would've been digging it more.

I think they were a TAD bit too early.
They would've fit in the Rawkus era quite nicely.

LOVE this album.

They were like a more 'underground' Arrested Development, but parred down and more direct. Plus Speech's beats were DOPE, the whole album is incredibly produced.

and Fulani Faluke was flowing his ass off

Plus "Basement Music" was that SHXT, a "Rap City" classic video.

I couldn't understand why they didn't blow, besides the "side group" syndrome

... Charter member, but I don't post much. LAZERS.

196. "Herbie Hancock - SUNLIGHT"
In response to Reply # 0

really, all his 1978-82 material not named V.S.O.P., The Piano, or the acoustic collabo with Chick Corea

Sunlight's reception in particular has been retconned as a number of artists (Robert Glasper Experiment comes to mind) have basically taken the baton Herbie left with that album and ran with it.

"Come Running To Me" (the real centerpiece of this album) was a neo-soul and hip-hop favorite

the one thing I enjoyed about this album over his other vocoder albums was that Herbie went all-in with the overdubs, and he kept it relatively jazz. Except on certain tracks on LITE ME UP! he employed regular background vocals. (Though, "Give It All Your Heart", the duet with Patrice Rushen on said album, might be my favorite one of such songs... )

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

In response to Reply # 0

In retrospect I think the only thing wrong with that album is the fact that he was affiliated with Hiero. His sound was somewhere between "traditional Hiero" & Mac Mall and them, so maybe he was hard to promote. I guess the fact that he called himself "Snupe" didn't help his cause either. Overall it's the best debut album from a Hiero member or group, I go back to this more than "93 Til".

I listen to this one a lot, and it seems as though it's sort of been tossed aside as a project full of half-baked ideas and incomplete sketches--which, to be fair, it kind of is. But I come back to this one more than any other Medicine Show release, and I gets better the more I do. I think it's a great journey through the oddly brilliant marriage of prog rock and gangsta rap. The tandem just works for some reason, and I think people are starting to get it now with the Pinata release. It's a journey with many odd skits, strange sounds and brilliant moments, and I wish more people would give it a chance.
