"Drake and Kendrick are the only stories worth following at this point."
Thu Aug-01-13 08:12 AM by Tiger Woods

These are really the only two guys in rap with megastar potential, whose output thus far warrants the hype, and who you can look at and realistically project will graduate to the Em/Jay/Ye/Kast/Dre tier.

And that's a really exclusive tier. No genre of music has fewer megastars than rap. But Drake and K-Dot are the only two right now who are destined for legend status, for Coachella headliner status namean? The exciting part is that they aren't there yet, Drake's at like "Hard Knock Life vol.2" and Kendrick is somewhere around "Ready to Die"...

Disagree? Then who else has a shot? (ASAP? CHILD PLEASE.)

because whenever I through something on like Smoke Again or Cocoa Butter Kisses my friends always go wild for it. "Juice" came up randomly on a shuffle during a smoke out last week and buddies said, "Hey, who's that? Does he have an album?" and we ended up listening to the whole thing through twice.

plenty of wack rappers are very famous now...if somebody doesnt like Drake that's cool but he has a fan base and there are a lot of fans that check for him. Hell, Lil Wayne is wack now but still sale concerts out..

about his story on a personal or musical level all that much.

I'd rather just have the occasional song I like reach me (I'm On One, Stay Schemin) then really be trying to take him all that serious & listening to full albums of his shit.

Kendrick is That Dude though.

because it has already been misunderstood by many here.

Story = Career Arc (in my interpretation)

not how a rapper grew up, drug dealing career, gang life, etc.

but to answer your question...no. However, popularity does hold weight when stacking up to Legends' career arc.

i do like that many of my favorite artists have very dedicated & loyal fanbases (which indicates some form of popularity i guess) even if those fanbases are relatively small or dispersed

i like when artists i like get bigups & recognition

so i understand in some sense

Cause I'm trying to figure out why we should be interested in these stories. I'm kind of interested in Kendrick, because I see a lot of room for growth, but also recognize he could just as easily plateau. Drake... I think I already know everything I'm going to get from that kid.

folk wonder what the disconnect between hip-hop generations is, this is it. 'story' here is meant to be rise to pop fame. like that's an exciting hip-hop story. really? and the thing is that it's not that previous gen's didn't want to gain fame, but the road to doing so was vis a vis being the 'best' at what they did. that was the motivation before the pop fame. can i be the best at this shit. i'mma put my all in to be the best. that's what made competition thick because anyone with the skills could theoretically come up and take the crown. not based on some fashioned marketing story but based on raw unadulturated skill. nas on live at the bbq was a fucking nobody who came in the door and bodied everyone, taking a spot at the top. not because he had the biggest most marketed pop hit at the time, but because he had them bars son.

legitimize him in the context of hip hop.

I honestly do not understand how a self respecting grown man, let alone one who has a history with rap, can enjoy dudes music.

BUT

Obviously there are some who enjoy his manufactured contrived feminine pop music. Okay.

I just don't get this constant need/attempt to get his name up there with actual rappers- let alone legends.

Yes he is popular (there are a lot of teenage girls out there), but how does that = legend?

How is he in the conversation more than Wayne? (who I also don't like, but he was running rap for a period- way moreso than Wheelchar is now)

Sh*t Ja Rule had a run.

Just enjoy his music. Get lost in his problems- his rich and lonely life. Do what you gotta do

But stop trying to convince others (yourselves?) that he is somehow on that level.

**the thread in general is wierd. I mean, I guess the general point is that here are no current rap superstars (and I'm a Kendrick stan), but instead it is worded like their "stories" should matter or are important.

I'm trying to figure out why either of their stories is more interesting than other rappers out there...but I'm probably overthinking it.

I'm also wondering why posts about music go wood generally, but threads about image are usually on fire.

In response to Reply # 34

Dude's a very technically skilled rapper - he's got flow, punchlines, rhyme schemes, etc. He's got dumb out verses, he's got topical verses, he's got braggadocios verses. And Take Care did a stellar job of telling his own story about the ups and downs of how fame has impacted his life and the people around him. It's not that tough to figure out.

I get that Drake's music doesn't really buy into the hyper-masculine bullshit that permeates hip-hop. Doesn't mean that he isn't a legitimate hip-hop artist: he raps, and he makes rap music. He doesn't ONLY make rap music, but he definitely makes rap music.

If you don't like his music that's cool, but I don't get why people are still trying to make it seem like he's not a legitimate rap artist. He has the potential to become a legend because of his uniqueness (nobody else has really been able to duplicate his sound or type of music), his penchant for making music that people can relate to, his anthem/hit-making ability, and how self-contained he and his music is. Teenage girls aren't the only ones who were quoting songs like "Started From The Bottom," either.

Drake has the most number one hits on the rap/R&B charts. That's definitely a "run." More of a run than what Ja had, IMO.

Not trying to get you to like his music, but it's sort of silly, IMO, to still try to say he's not a legitimate rap star at this point.

Question is, who else is on the horizon?

Meek Mill looked like he was about to become a DMX-like star, very street oriented, but he's sort of been in the same position for the past two years, since "I'm A Boss" dropped. Mixtapes are well received, album had some marginal hits and was pretty slept on (it kinda got lost amidst the GKMC hype), yet he hasn't gotten any bigger.

Big Sean also seemed to be close to rap megastardom. Album spawned a handful of hit records and his features on all of the G.O.O.D. Music album shit shined bright. Detroit mixtape was impressive, easily his most consistent work. But a trio of "meh" singles have him spinning his tires.

Wale had risen from the dead to a surprisingly large fanbase, very vocal and loyal, but he too seems to have plateaued. The new album has got good word of mouth I believe, and he has a genuine crossover hit on there, but is he mentioned amongst Drake and Kendrick for either skills OR star power, or really even close to it? Nahhh.

Kid Cudi once shared a GQ cover with Drake and Wale, yet he's probably the least "relevant" one, and he sort of seems ok with it. I never get the impression that he's chasing those dudes, sounds quite content in his little lane.

Wiz's last album stalled his momentum, A$AP is too much of a niche artist at this point, Macklemore is a massive star but not so much within hip hop (same goes for Pitbull, Flo-Rida, etc.)

I guess J. Cole is the closet one up next? Though I find it kind of just there with the exception of about four or five songs, that "Born Sinner" album has been a huge hit and he seems to have risen in stock.

He definitely got lost in GKMC hype. Dude made a decent album, too. I just think he needs to continue growing as an artist. The MMG team seems pretty solid though, so if he has it in him, I think they'll get it out.

I think he'll be fine. I've heard good things about the album. But the singles haven't lifted off, you're right. Hopefully he does well; I want him to win, and I think he has a unique style.

Don't underestimate Wale's fan base; dude was almost on Forbes list last year based on how crazy his touring was. He isn't mentioned among Drake or Kendrick, but I still think he has a legitimate spot. Dude's immensely talented, and he has a much more identifiable lane now that he's with MMG, vs. his previous major label album. I don't think he has hit his ceiling because he still hasn't really combined all of his skills the way that he's capable of, but he's still making dope music IMO.

>Kid Cudi once shared a GQ cover with Drake and Wale, yet he's

Yeah dude seems happy where he's at, to me.

I think Wiz will be fine, as will A$AP. Don't know Macklemore's music well enough to really weigh in.

I wasn't feeling the album, but he's definitely up there. Dude's talented, and he's found a way to identify with his fan base. I don't know how much he'll continue to ascend unless he gets another producer to help out.

the music is an afterthought now, a 14 track album can have 6 good songs and be called a classic

Kendrick's music has personality and doesn't make a great effort to pander, as he favors giving you who he is
Drake's music is nothing but pandering with little else to back it up but more pandering
that's why when you guys talk about the music itself (which is pretty rare) the most you can say is 'shit goes' or 'it bangs'-and even that is more than ready for a debate amongst anyone with any amount of sense

There's nothing wrong with seeing which artists will make the biggest impact in their genre of music. Doesn't mean no one else is worth listening to. I took his post to mean that Drake and Kendrick are the only ones who are built to make long-term impact; not that they're the only artists who are dope.

I'm not so averse to the use of "star power", because that's really
just a way of saying a dude has "it", like they always said Busta had
"it" after his scenario performance. Q-Tip even spoke on that once.
Star power has always been something that mattered if you're a
performer of any kind. It's just that "it" that makes people wanna
hear you. Q-Tip, Eazy-E, Busta... all groups emphasize this.

What's silly to me is that cats are worried about "megastardom".
I get that Hip Hop is mainstream now, but talking to fans about who's
got the biggest pop appeal is, admittedly, pretty weird to me....
mainly because you have to make people-pleasing efforts, musically,
to have pop appeal. Most of the stuff that crosses over these days
has incorporated so many elements of some other genre that it
doesn't even sound like Hip Hop OR it's just some ignorant shit
that's more comedy/clown-worthy than anything.

I just can't talk Hip Hop with cats who are more worried about
"megastardom" than some real raw shit.

I doubt the Cole album reaches platinum status and I strongly doubt Cole could get the kind of reaction Kendrick got at the flash concert outside of Staples Center: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdQBVuFc9tc

Kendrick's rise was really organic and natural and J. Cole just hasn't reached that level yet (especially with the music. Born Sinner was meh.)

Personal taste? I am going off of the ability to reach megastardom as discussed in the original post. I like both artists but I think Cole has more mass appeal and versatility. He also outsold Kanye West who is definitely a SuperStar. I think Kendrick sold about half that.

Just noticed the rest of your post. I had only read the title. Okay, so you're saying that Kendrick is more likely to have star power based on you not thinking that Cole will go Platinum (we don't know yet so time will tell) and that he can't draw a crowd (he practically shut down the city of Toronto) and that you aren't feeling born sinner (personal taste).

By the way, I know that Kendrick eventually went platinum but pretty sure it took at least a year if not more. I'm not knocking that at all, just saying give Cole time. I think Cole has platinum sales in his future and the potential to appeal to a wider demographic. Drake, Cole and Kendrick are all future hip hop elite IMO.

I just don't think that Cole has the ability to make hits in the same way that Kendrick has shown. His big records aren't as big as Kendrick's big records. His album is getting nowhere near the critical acclaim. GKMC is generally agreed upon as the best album of last year. I doubt Born Sinner gets any such accolades.

In response to Reply # 0

My social circle is probably all between 23-37 or so...I know of no Drake fans.

His first album was boring. I tried....gave it a fair shot. Flat out boring. I didnt listen to his second album, but the singles didnt make me want to.

Why is he worth following? I don't care if the teenagers still like him or not. And I have no idea if they do, but it doesn't matter. Why should I care? What's he bringing that's worth following?

But the second album is fantastic. I don't want to give him too much credit yet, but there are sounds on "Take Care" I had never heard on a major rap release before. Give that one a shot, I did a complete 180 on Drake after that to the point I'm pretty eager to hear his next project.
