He definitely got lost in GKMC hype. Dude made a decent album, too. I just think he needs to continue growing as an artist. The MMG team seems pretty solid though, so if he has it in him, I think they'll get it out.
>Big Sean also seemed to be close to rap megastardom. Album >spawned a handful of hit records and his features on all of >the G.O.O.D. Music album shit shined bright. Detroit mixtape >was impressive, easily his most consistent work. But a trio of >"meh" singles have him spinning his tires.
I think he'll be fine. I've heard good things about the album. But the singles haven't lifted off, you're right. Hopefully he does well; I want him to win, and I think he has a unique style.
>Wale had risen from the dead to a surprisingly large fanbase, >very vocal and loyal, but he too seems to have plateaued. The >new album has got good word of mouth I believe, and he has a >genuine crossover hit on there, but is he mentioned amongst >Drake and Kendrick for either skills OR star power, or really >even close to it? Nahhh.
Don't underestimate Wale's fan base; dude was almost on Forbes list last year based on how crazy his touring was. He isn't mentioned among Drake or Kendrick, but I still think he has a legitimate spot. Dude's immensely talented, and he has a much more identifiable lane now that he's with MMG, vs. his previous major label album. I don't think he has hit his ceiling because he still hasn't really combined all of his skills the way that he's capable of, but he's still making dope music IMO.
>Kid Cudi once shared a GQ cover with Drake and Wale, yet he's >probably the least "relevant" one, and he sort of seems ok >with it. I never get the impression that he's chasing those >dudes, sounds quite content in his little lane.
Yeah dude seems happy where he's at, to me.
>Wiz's last album stalled his momentum, A$AP is too much of a >niche artist at this point, Macklemore is a massive star but >not so much within hip hop (same goes for Pitbull, Flo-Rida, >etc.)
I think Wiz will be fine, as will A$AP. Don't know Macklemore's music well enough to really weigh in.
>I guess J. Cole is the closet one up next? Though I find it >kind of just there with the exception of about four or five >songs, that "Born Sinner" album has been a huge hit and he >seems to have risen in stock.
I wasn't feeling the album, but he's definitely up there. Dude's talented, and he's found a way to identify with his fan base. I don't know how much he'll continue to ascend unless he gets another producer to help out. ----
