"The Low End Theory : A Tribe Called Quest #1991"

I'm listening to Tribe's Low End Theory right now. I remember being in high school when it dropped then I went to New York with some friends when Jazz video came out. This album is Hip Hop at its finest. So..

1. Where would you place Low End Theory all time?
2. What is your favorite song on the album?
3. Is it truly better than Midnight Marauders?

Random Low End Theory comment...

Peace

I will answer the questions this time myself as well.

1. I feel that Low End Theory is between #8-#12 all time
2. Verses from The Abstract is my favorite track on the LP
3. Some days I feel it is and some days I don't...toss up

This is when I fell in love with Tribe. I liked the debut but this made me a fan for life

Thanes

Excursions

Yes, Slightly better

1991 is the year I really developed my own taste in rap music. This album along with Death Certificate, De La Soul Is Dead, A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing and Quik Is the Name are the reasons I love rap.

>1. Where would you place Low End Theory all time?

I'd put it somewhere in the top 15 or even top 10, I have never actually written out my list. The only thing I never waver on is my top 2 lol, everything after that moves around a ton.

>2. What is your favorite song on the album?

This is a tough choice but how I'm feeling right now I would probably say Verses From the Abstract

>3. Is it truly better than Midnight Marauders?

I slightly prefer Midnight Marauders but they are both monumental classics

>Random Low End Theory comment...

Low End Theory to me is just hip-hop personified. If I had to explain hip-hop to an alien being or just give them an example to listen to in order to help them understand it, this album would be near or at the top of the list.

#3 or #4.

Probably Vibes and Stuff

>3. Is it truly better than Midnight Marauders?

Yep. It's sorta close, but LET pulls it out.

Remember catching the Check the Rhyme video for the first time during the summer, and knowing Tribe had taken it to another level.

>1. Where would you place Low End Theory all time?
Top 10, easily
>2. What is your favorite song on the album?
Jazz. It's a near perfect hip hop song.
>3. Is it truly better than Midnight Marauders?

You know, I've always felt it's a toss up...but I actually like the beats more on MM. I remember reading/hearing that Tribe "was really fucked up" (booze? weed?) during the recording of LET, but they felt they really perfected their craft with MM. So I think I gotta go with MM.
>
>
>Random Low End Theory comment...

I actually wasn't too into it when I first heard it. I was more into the multi-layered stuff like PE and more bangin stuff from the West. After repeated listens, it became one of my favorite of all time.

>1. Where would you place Low End Theory all time?

It is currently ranked #13 of all-time in the Handbook link in my sig.
Sandwiched between Aquemini and Illadelph Halflife.
The 12 albums preceding it are Aquemini, Like Water for Chocolate, Liquid Swords,
ATLiens, Blowout Comb, It Takes a Nation of Millions..., Dark Twisted Fantasy,
The Extinction Agenda, Ironman, Madvillainy, Illmatic and Enter the Wu-Tang.

>2. What is your favorite song on the album?

"Buggin' Out" or "Rap Promoter". I love "Buggin Out" freestyles though so I'll let the beat win that debate.

>3. Is it truly better than Midnight Marauders?

Kind of easily, IMO, but then Low End Theory hit me at just the right time, when I was antsy to dive headfirst into the deep end of hip-hop after re-discovering my love of Wu-Tang and Jay-Z, becoming obsessed with Clipse, T.I. and Lil' Wayne in the early/mid-2000s. Tribe provided gateway into a whole other side of hip-hop, where it could still be hard but it could be fun, and Low End Theory was the perfect snack-sized sort of comfort food for that period.

Compared to Low End Theory, blasphemous as it is to say, Midnight Marauders has always been a bit of an afterthought to me...an afterthought ranked #69 out of 1,137 albums, but still.

Top 5.

>2. What is your favorite song on the album?

Probably Buggin' Out. Though there's been other times where I mightve said Check The Rhime, Jazz, Butter, or Excursions......but that Buggin' Out baseline is what always automatically pops into my head when I hear or see the words "Low End Theory".

>3. Is it truly better than Midnight Marauders?

Yeah. They're both two of my favorite albums though. But I like Low End a little more.

1. Some where in the top20, more likely top10
2. Excursions, Vibes-N-Stuff and Scenario
3. No! They're equal, but I prefer MM

random: I don't think anyone has truly added to their legacy, except maybe The Roots. Those on their branch were either overtly more political (which is not a bad thing), or lacked their ear for melody (def a bad thing). No one quite makes me as nostalgic for the 90s lkke Tribe. Depending on the day, they're 1A, 1B with Wu

Also Phife is a GOOD FUCN RAPPER. great by today's standards.

...but Low End Theory has my all time favorite Tribe song. Jazz (We Got).

I love the feel both The Low End Theory and Digable Planets Blowout Comb have.
I tend to listen to them both together.

>1. Where would you place Low End Theory all time?
If we're talking strickly hip hop, Top 20 easy, maybe top 10. I'd have to sort that out

>2. What is your favorite song on the album?
Vibes and Stuff on the album. But the remix of Jazz (We got It) is still one of my top 5 remixes ever and a personal favorite

>3. Is it truly better than Midnight Marauders?
As an album, MM is definitely lyrically and musically better than LET. But I'll always love Low End more, just because of the place it takes me when I hear it. Plus, MM had to go up against 36 Chambers the same day, and there was no winning that one...

>
>Random Low End Theory comment...
I remember going to NC A&T's homecoming one year when Busta, Fugees and Tribe were performing (at least I think that was the setlist, memory is a bit rusty). That was a great show. They closed out with that Jazz remix and I damn near lost my shit
