I say no because I have a list, and on that list, because of the rules, he's not in the cut.

http://rateyourmusic.com/list/Nodima/geek_down__nodimas_hip_hop_index

(Even with all the bonus points provided to him he only hits #41).

But, just to use last.fm for an easy early-morning example, I mean...

1: Lil' Wayne- 3,896
2- Beat Konducta: 2,688
3- Curren$y: 2,426
5- Jay-Z: 2,082
6- Radiohead: 1,893
6- Gucci Mane: 1,893
8- The Beatles: 1,652
9- Nas: 1,564
10- The Roots: 1,516

How can I argue against an artist I've listened to, by one metric, 1,000 times more than the next man (and snarkists please note that the next man is an instrumental gawd)? It'd be wrong. 2005-2008 Wayne truly was, and might always be, the most exciting thing that ever happened to hip-hop in my lifetime.

And he introduced me to the third dude on the list in '06. His influence on my listening habits - particularly the diversity of them - is hard to ignore.

*Copied from the Kanye post*

Shit, there are at least 5 dudes in the Wu that HAVE to be named before Kanye.

Then you got the legends, Rakim, KRS, Kool G, BDK, Melle Mel, LL, Chuck D, Plugs 1 and 2, Masta Ace, Cube, Face, DOC

Then you have the early 90s, Q-Tip, Redman, Grand Puba, CL, Guru, Snoop.

Rest of the 90s, Nas, Biggie, Pac, Jay, AZ, Common, Andre and Big Boi, Bun B, Cee-Lo, Xzibit, Tash, Kurupt, Mos Def, Kweli, J Live, Monch, OC, Big L, Big Pun, Black Thoughr, Jeru, Prodigy, Buckshot, Steele, Sean Price, Roc Marc, Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss

Then you have the new jacks who are from his era, TI, Lupe, Brother Ali, Freeway, POS, Blu.

Shit, I haven't even really stopped to think about this or have I named cats like Aesop Rock and El P who are also better MCs.

I'll forever be bewildered over his sudden rise in popularity in the mid 00's. I've never been all that impressed.

He's not even in the conversation.

His longevity is pretty much unmatched by anyone in rap.

Although I don't care for his music recently, Wayne's run from the Sqad Up tapes until around Drought 3/pre-Carter 3 ish, he was really rapping his ass off.

Straight lyrically, probably not in my 25. Overall body of work, one could make the argument. Just off the measurables, I think he deserves a spot in the 25.

18 years. The number of acts that have been popular/relevant for as long as him is very small

Nas, Jay, Snoop, Common, LL Cool J.....there's 5 with longer careers who have been relevant since there first album, even earlier in Snoop and Nas's cases. There's quite a few more too I'm sure, that was just a quick 5.

I don't even need to get into questioning just how many of those 18 years that Wayne was "relevant" for, because even if you stretch it to give him all 18, it's still less than the length of relevancy for those 5.
