I'm so confused, and ashamed of my thoughts.

But from what I've heard of his group, it's pretty good stuff.

For what it's worth, I thought that he has been the best bassist the Roots had. I know that might be some sort of sacrliege to the Hub fanatics, but I always thought that Owen was tasteful but also provided tons of improvised flavor and technical ability to his parts.

I recall hearing/seeing some shit that was definitely live and sounded dope. Seems like there's a bubbling renaissance of jazz-influenced live electronic groups that is popping up (particularly in NYC) and I'm all for it. I personally have a similar project in the works down here, too.

I have always thought it was kind of weird though that someone would quit such a successful and ubiquitous band like the Roots to go do...something like this. But hey, it takes all kinds.

I mean I'm here and not sure I've heard this but I also wonder what you mean by it. Pretty sure the band I'm in doesn't quite count. And from the two songs in here I wouldn't call it jazz at all. Electronic jam band maybe. No slight in any of that but I'm wondering what I'm missing out on.

Color me intrigued.

Well I can see creative differences in it so maybe 'quit' is the operative word.

Incidentally all is not quite forgiven. The musician faces in the first link are really fucking with my head hard. I'm wanting to say more but....

Something like inside//outside might be what he's getting at: http://insideoutsidemusic.bandcamp.com/

Though they're more distinctly contemporary fusion (or however you want to go about classifying things). Still, it clearly takes compositional cues from electronic styles of the 80's and 90's.

Last time I was in NYC earlier this summer, I had the pleasure to meet and jam with the drummer for Blitz the Ambassador (he's also played with PPP). Him and a cat named Lex Sadler do this improvised electronica night at NuBlu, definitely influenced by Squarepusher and incorporating a good mix of live instruments and synthy/electronic stuff. I've heard some of the other artists named in this thread, too.

As for my own endeavor I was speaking on...I discovered a secret weapon late last year that I've been using in both my own solo shit as well as a project that is starting to emerge with two other extremely talented electronic musicians. For my own shit, it has simply been a means to an end in terms of making my writing/recording more efficient. For the group project, it's about to be some whole new other crazy shit. And yes, I'm being intentionally cryptic hahaha.

I guess now would also be as good a place as ever to plug the fact that I just dropped an instrumental this week:

I always thought Owen seemed a bit out of place in The Roots. Not in a terrible way but seeing this I can definitely understand why he would leave such a quality gig.

I actually saw Pepper's Ghost a few years back, right after he joined the Roots, and he was apparently their bassist for a while prior to the Roots.

I remember checking out Mister Barrington when he left the Roots and recall it as being far jazzier than this clip.

As far as bands that may be in this vein, there's also (without the 'electronic interface' aspect of the playing):
-Lake Trout - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMCx9qQxjmM
-some band whose name I simply cannot remember. I think I saw them opening for Soul Coughing. They were a three-piece, keys, bass, drums. That's about all I can remember, except that I know OKP bassndaplace made a post about them once.

-------
so I'm in a band now:
album ---> http://greenwoodburns.bandcamp.com/releases
Soundcloud ---> http://soundcloud.com/greenwood-burns

my own stuff -->http://soundcloud.com/lonesomedstringband
