Again I just think it's a cute title for a cool cover. Maybe the interview goes more in depth about the caption.

Do you actually remember what was going on in 1995-1996? I made a list of mcees that people were actually raving about back then. This list is East Coast biased, but Tip is from here so it shouldn't affect his standing.

Notorious Big
Lauryn Hill
GZA
Jeru
Nas
Common
KRS
Prodigy
Jay-Z
Busta Rhymes
Kurupt
Tupac
Cee-Lo
Pharaohe Monche
Scarface
Rae or Ghost
Redman
AZ
Black Thought
Kool G Rap
Grand Puba
Pick your fav from De La Soul
Pick your fav from Outkast
Pick your favorite from Bone
Pick your fav from Wu outside of Ghost, Rae & GZA
Maybe even pick your favorite from Bootcamp

That's at least 25 right there.

Now on to some personal picks that some might agree with or heartily laugh at

ODB
Guru
Tash from the Liks
Treach
Saafir
Whoever my favorite was from Hiero at that time
Aceyalone
Xzibit
Big L
OC
Ras Kass
Lord Finesse
Sadat X
AG was killing shit on Goodfellas
Fat Joe (gasp)
Kool Keith
Godfather Don
Mic Geronimo

Now Tip is a dope mcee in his own right but people weren't really taking about his raps. You do remember how shocked everyone was at his verse on "Drink Away The Pain", don't you? It was much more lyrical than we were accustomed to.

Like you said, it's east coast biased. maybe that was the case up
there but in my hometown at that time, Tip was better than half them
niccas you listed. LOL at Puba being on that list. That nicca was def
coasting by 95. Tip was def a more memorable emcee than Puba by 95/96

I'm not talking about whose music is doper, I'm talking about the rappers who had rewindable verses. And if you had heard the album Puba was originally trying to put out as "2000" you might change even your mind on him. I still can't find my dub and there's only two songs from it (outside of the handful that made the release of "2000") on the net.

This is the only track from the 2000 demo on Youtube (classic Lord Finesse production with the trademark sleigh bells)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1fRQEs7oRs

Another track from the 2000 demo "Ain't It Good to Ya" can be found on side 2 of DJ Clue's "Spring pt.1" which you can find here

I was among the many salivating for B&R&L but I wasn't expecting a bunch of rewindable verses. With Tribe it's more about the overall feel of the music.
It's easy to say "oh he was hotter than half that list" without naming which half he was hotter than (which I doubt you can actually do).

It'd be easier to say cats who could be seen as better than Tip in 95-96. The rest of your list is a "Noooooooo".

I am in no way putting Tip on BR&L up there with It Was Written, Liquid Swords, Illadelph etc.

Like someone else said, Tip is a great MC that is all about vining with the track.

He is not a lyricist in the same sense as other great MCs.

You listed albums by some of the best (GZA, BT and Nas) but most of them cats fam named weren't making great songs. Rapping for the sake of riddling is overrated IMO.

That in 95, people were not waiting on Tribes album because they were getting verses to rewing from Tip.

Tip has never been an MC that makes you say "oh shit!"

And I'm not taking anything from him because he is one of the greatest of all-time.

But there is no way you are going to tell me he's a better MC than dudes like AZ and OC regardless if he has the better catalogue.

If you want to call it "rappity-rap" then that's whatever. I don't even know what that shit means.

And I don't agree with everyone on the list above but I also dot agree with calling his performance on BR&L one of the best over the course of an album.

he specifically said emcees people were raving about and nobody in my
area was checking for over half the people he claimed was better than
Tip. Not sure where he's from but then it comes down to preference so
maybe that was the case where he was at.

Nobody was ever raving about Tip as an MC.

People raved about Tribe period as a Hip-Hop group.

I have never seen Tip mentioned in anyone's top anything.

There are different ways to rank MCs.

Overall body of work, Tip is high on that list

As a flat out MC...someone you don't want to pick up the mic after, he simply is t that guy and I think that's all the poster above was saying.

Someone like Inspectah Deck isn't listed higher than Tip on the greatest MCs but I can guarantee you that if Deck and Tip were on he same track, the majority of people would come away saying "Deck fucking killed that joint" before they say Tip did.

And never was Tip listed as one of the best MCs.

He was never on the Rakim/BDK/G Rap level

He was never on the Nas/Big/Pac/Jay level

Shit, when he rhymes with Thought, Com and Mos, no one was saying Tip had the better verses.

I hate these type of combos because it comes off disrespectful to Tip and he's one of my favorites ever.

But I'm not going to lie and act like Tip has top verses of all time nominations.

he put a lot of himself out there and did it without being whiny or emotional for no fucking reason
it's a very personal album and has equal amounts of wit, variety and lyrical sharpness
he just blends in with the music to the point that it's sublime and most people don't notice it because it isn't as in your face

In response to Reply # 67

"In the Sun," "Separate/Together," his last verse on "Check the Rhime," etc.
the thing with him is that he did a lot of back and forth with Phife, so he has a lot of broken up verses, but he's a great writer nonetheless
he's the greatest ever at saying something with tons of meaning and not wasting words
he states things simply to the point that he operates on the sublime, but make no mistake he's highly lyrical when he needs to be

The consensus was "Tribe makes really great music". Maybe you're underestimating how strong the talent pool was at the time.
