"R. Kelly > Maxwell, D'Angelo, Musiq, whoever."

ALL of them. he better than them. i've seen them all in concert. R. Kelly turned it out better than any of them.

my god.

he sang. SANG. everything. w/a band. and a choir. EVERYTHING.

he may not be a genius, but he's easily the best R&B act of the last 27 (fuckin) yrs. EASILY.

fuck you.

but the man puts on one hell of a show. i put it on the strength of his hits and his fairly awesome voice. b/c the show was pretty much just that - him on stage w/a band singing his hits and some album tracks and some of his features. snippets of most of them but he gave full versions of the key hits, like 'Feelin On Yo Booty', 'Bump N Grind' (Remix), 'Your Body's Callin', 'Step In the Name of Love', 'Ignition' (Remix), 'I Believe I Can Fly', 'When A Woman Loves' and maybe a couple others.

i wouldn't be surprised if a couple ladies got pregnant during the show.

fuck you.

it's with the way you voice your opinion
post after post after post of the same thing, and when someone bigs up another artist you go out of your way to insert R\Kelly into it favorably or say they need to work with him to make something meaningful
half the time you don't even contribute to the discussion, it's just a chance to exalt R yet again, and when met with a rebuttal you do it yet again without addressing the statement
agree or disagree, I can see why that would wear thin, especially from someone that knows a lot about music like you do

never comes up. for instance when i do posts on Joe Sample or Bee Gees or talk about this or that.

I mean it ain't hardly the case and you can't even name the last thread i made of him here.

and you don't see all these Prince threads and posts daily now do you? and I'm talking about a Cat who ain't hit, hit in 25 years to almost 30.

if i can turn this into the Relic Lesson well let me bring back acts from the 80's.

i run alot of threads on Rick James, Gap Band, Charlie Wilson, Isleys, Earth,Wind and fire, etc.. and they might go wood.

all depends on what you wanna see and how you view me. each and thier own.

In response to Reply # 5

R's production is more varied I'll give you that, but I feel like Maxwell's music accomplishes it's mood better than R and most R&B artists.

R has alot of advantages over Maxwell, like stronger singles, more risk taking, but I always felt Max had him on production.

R.kelly's band...there was a lot of pre-recorded music and vocals being used...

that's what he does.

He didn't do it for years...the not do it for the 1 show you happened to be attending...lol..But hey...people who don't look for stuff like that..particularly if you're actually at the concert...it's not important to them. They just want it to "sound good".

all that really matters is whether or not u enjoyed the show. People look for different things in a live performance and if you got what you were looking for than that's all that matters.

I personally prefer a more live, in the moment sound in concerts with real background vocals and a mixing of pre-recorded sounds (if any) that enhances the live instrumentation sound instead of replacing it. More raw sounding than sanitized. R.Kelly and the scores of current mainstream R&B artists he's influenced don't give you that in my opinion.

but what they do give you is entertaining for some so again, for them that's all that matters.

i actually watched and listened carefully for pre-recorded backing music b/c of what i've heard about his shows.

i know i heard some drum machines going on at times. that's nothing to me though. and there were some pre-recorded backing vocals too. but everything else was live as far as i could tell. if the band was up there faking it they did an incredible job. if Kellz lip-synched he's the best lip-syncher of all time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JhniiGkk3c

and like I said...He comin with the pre-recorded vocals and music...

in fact..thats what he's giving right from the very beginning of the show. That's a pre-recorded loop of his voice singing at the very beginning...you can tell that because when he actually comes out on stage, you can hear him talking to the crowd over his own pre-recorded voice loop in the background.... also..that piano part at the very beginning sounds like a loop also..

then you see the choir come out...

sowhat mentioned that R. even had a choir..

right...

but unless the choir came back out after the beginning...all they do on this part is come out and clap their hands...

the man brought a choir out on stage and they DIDN'T sing...

wow...

You can say someone had a choir or they had this or that...but if the choir ain't sang...what's the point? it's pantomiming....

Then the choir departs the stage as ignition starts...

again...

you hear R.Kelly's pre-recorded voice saying bounce bounce bounce bounce .....and you hear Kelly live addressing the audience at the same time...

again...pre-recorded vocals and music being used in a "live" concert.....a choir coming out that don't sing just clap (a tip..if you see a choir on a concert stage without mics in front of them or without the type of mics that are hanging from above...they probably not singing live).... The choir was the same type of prop as those people were who filled the isles at the BET award performance.'

i'm not trying to throw shade at sowhat or anyone else who digs an R.Kelly show..but above I was accused of "hatin" on something I wasn't in attendance to see... I just wanted to provide some video evidence and some analysis as to what I was talking about and show that Warren Coolidge ain't on some made up shit.

but again..if that's what you dig in a concert....then more power to you. You pay your money to get what you want and if you get it...that's all that matters..

I'm just sayin it ain't for me....why it ain't for me....and examples of what I'm talkin bout.

Michael Jackson's probably most famous performance was a lip sync performance....but when I saw him a few weeks after that with his brothers for the Victory Tour at Dodger Stadium....there was no lip syncing happening...it was all the way live.

with the live. I mean er'body at that level uses pre-recorded tracks and some use vocals too. But I think there is a point where it's usage makes the live concert sound a bit too canned...a bit too sanitized ...and less in the moment for my taste.

although I wouldn't consider my self an R.Kelly fan.... when he has brought it live how I dig artists to bring it live...I have no problem giving him his props.. he's a talented dude.....just want him to bring it more raw live so to speak.

I heard R sing live. Acapella, even. Yes there were prerecorded backing vocals at times.

Anyway I don't care, man. The show was fantastic. R is an amazing live performer. I've heard no complaints from ppl who were actually at the show. We all had a ball. I'd go see him again, for sure.

Fwiw, 2 weeks prior I saw Prince live in a room that holds 500 ppl. He had a 4 piece band with 10 horns and 3 backup singers and a dancer. They turned that shit out too. Easily the best show I've seen this yr. R's show is 2nd. A close 2nd.

I don't think it's ever been in question that R sings live. He does. He sounds really good live every time I've heard him. it's his usage of guide tracks, pre-recorded backing vocals and the mix of pre-recorded music with the live playing that I've been critical of him about....and again not just him...pretty much every other current artist who does that ..regardless of who they are...it's something I'm going to point out as not measuring up in terms of what I look for.

>again, for sure.

and again that's all that matters. People who pay their money to go see an R.Kelly show have their expectations...and if he meets them, that's all that matters. Although I would strongly disagree with characterizing R.Kelly or anyone else as an "amazing live performer" who utilizes as much of the guide tracks and pre-recorded stuff as he does.....all that really matters is if HIS fans and those who attend his shows are entertained. That's the bottom line.

same ole hate and like clock work. R.Kelly ain't being his thing for all these years because of being a one trick pony and FYI you should have seen his live shows from 96-01 he really put it down.

he brings it live period. musically he can't be faded.

and as much as some of his awards show performances had some corny elements.... I actually agree that his concert performances back then were more in line with what I'm talking about..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfE6ESUbXos

I mean just vocally...on this clip right there....it just sounds so much better with without the pre-recorded vocals....with the real live back up singers and with the sound of the actual band playing sounding..

even on this ...which Vibe really is not one of my favorite songs...but I must say on this performance R.Kelly is actually getting kind of funky live..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8gz1aBsUbg

so yeah...I agree..

but...

from that to where he is now live...just from a technique standpoint in what he's doing.... it's not advancing...it's a step back...it's mailing it in...

He needs to bring some heat like he did in those clips to his live show right today....

sure his fans are gonna be entertained either way...but I'm just being honest.... I mean what is the nigga going on the cheap by not having background singers that you can hear singing live now?? Or is he trying to sound more like the record..

either way the shit ain't hittin now how it was hittin before....

and again..that was a loooooooooong time ago.

if you get funky on stage at your concerts...you always supposed to do that shit..you ain't supposed to pull back and go cheesy corn on em....

to perform in Africa. folks that have gone to see him perform including myself, the cat is badd live.

now i do agree he plays a certain role to maintain his base, because he has performed concerts and performances where it wasn't anything like he usually does.

i'm gonna tell you like this, had he wanted to, he could have easily done what Usher did in his sleep, because the cat had steps and moves, however once his slow to mid tempo cuts became his bread and butter along with his anthems,etc.. he changed his game up.

however there is a reason why he is a good fit for Charlie Wilson, ROnald Isley and the Isleys, Michael Jackson,etc...

and he is a strong Live performer. he still sings and sounds just like he did back in the day. when you hear him perform Bump and Grind it sounds just like 1993 all over again and the scary part he has added even more strength to holding his notes as the years have gone by.

and he brings it live. that Sam Cooke one night performance at his crib was the truth. that was on point.

i expect when he gets older he will do more of the throwback thing, and he might hint at that now, however he plays a 3 headed role, does his standards, does what is happening now with mixing his brand of R&B with a Hip Hop Mentality and then you get his andrew lloyd webber vibe.

he wants to stay true to the record and also he wants to give folks what they want, however he has the kind of fan base that is open to whatever he does pretty much.

the thing is that it really has nothing to do with maintaining his base. his base is going to go to his shows either way, which makes it even more disturbing really that he uses so much pre-recorded stuff.

He does it out of choice not necessity.

man those artists didn't need no R.Kelly....He's a small blip on their careers. Those guys all brought it all the way live in their concerts and have for decades. Kells should have taken note of that.

it be nice if he did it without so many guiding tracks.

Andrew Lloyd weber?? lololol.....

Kells don't bring it raw live. his core fans don't hold him accountable for it but for me..I'm gonna stick with artists who bring it more raw. That type of things has more staying power....Who wants to be the veteran artist using stick and mailing it in with corny dramatics in their show??? That shouldn't be any artists goal.

he added another decade and change to the Isley Brothers Brand
He help add another chapter in the Charlie Wilson era as he did with Michael Jackson to a whole new era who didn't hear Him in his past,etc..

and R.kelly holds his own live and he has put out on many strong live shows.

the Money does matter because if the cat didn't have the goods then nobody would be checking like that, year in and year out period.

i mean we live in a day and time when the kind of thing you want to see is more on a county fair and hardly in the same arenas we were use to.

and lets be real folks do hold him accountable as they do any act period.

Poor Harris! I love Aziz. Dude kills me. The R. Kelly bit is definitely my favorite bit of his.

Mumblo has to be a big Michael J FOx since that turkey is truly stuck with "Back to the Future"

and Maxwell choked and black summer's night ain't coming anytime soon and his voice ain't even close to the cool he had. Maxwell is a should have, could have and would have type of cat.

D'angelo had that chance as well, however at this stage he is about as memorable as Sisqo

because Sorry, however that duet had no fire at all.

next of all that kind of song was the kind of song he needed this on his last two albums to be honest.

and Maxwell needs to be getting his Michael Jackson on, because he needs to drop that Gem, that reminds folks of why we cared back then. he needs that kind of song and album.

since most of the hits i heard Sunday night were at least 5 or 10 yrs old.

this was the 1st and only time i've seen him live. if i see him again in a couple yrs i expect the same show.

acts tend to do that after they've been at it for a while. they boil their thing down to a few blocks of songs and then just rearrange those blocks for any given show.

like w/Sly - i have several bootlegs of shows he did in the late 60s through the 80s. he was still doing the same medleys over and over. and his set lists didn't include much of any thing he made after 1971 except 'If You Want Me To Stay'.

MJ did the same, tired Jackson 5 medley in most of his tours. hell, the 1st leg of the Bad Tour was just the Victory Tour w/'Bad' and i think 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' thrown in (of course, the Victory Tour was the Triumph Tour w/some Thriller songs added - so by then in 1987 he'd been doing the same show since 1981). he finally switched it up a bit for the remainder of the tour.

Prince does that piano set toward the end of most of his big shows. he switched it up for an acoustic guitar set on one tour. but still.

it happens. so i won't be mad if Kellz is doing the same show a few yrs from now.

fuck you.

In response to Reply # 65

ain't that deep to ride a set list as such. cat gotta have a few more albums and hits to have a set list of 12 songs you gonna hear over and over.

now Stevie Wonder has switched up things. from time to time.

yeah R.kelly has kept it very close to the same for some time now.

Michael Jackson switched up things for the dangerous tour though.

yeah the victory tour was the same exact one as the triumph one aside from the thriller era.

Bad tour was a hybrid of the two previous tours.

Earth,Wind and Fire had it fresh for a long time with there live show.

same with Lionel Richie until he just did the hits, however Richie does the hits in full, solo and commodores stuff.

In response to Reply # 0

He was two hours late for a crowd of 60,000, and when he finally got there he got on the stage lip-syncing and singing over his own prerecorded vocals. He had a band with him, but you couldn't hear them at ALL in the mix, just the music from the backing tracks. You could see the drummer playing licks on the toms and not hear anything at all. It was like a karaoke show with his own music. He just did snippets of his songs, sometimes singing on top of his vocals, sometimes just-letting the track play. He also stopped the show ten minutes into it saying that if security didn't let the crowd past the fence and in front of the stage he wouldn't continue. Then he went backstage for around 10-15 minutes, leaving his band out there looking confused. Came back out and went back into doing snippets of songs.

All of this was when he was the last act of the weekend and everyone else was GREAT. Friday night was Charlie Wilson who was just amazing, Jill Scott, TGT (were just okay but WAY better than Kells), and Bootsy, and Saturday was Kem (really put on a great show), Fantasia, Morris Day and Leela James. I was really looking forward to Kells on Saturday because I heard he had a great stage show. The footage in this post from Pitchfork was 1000% better than anything we got that night. The fact that it was after waiting 2 hours for him (everyone else was on time for their slots) was insult to injury.

All this you just described is what I see from all the live videos of R.kelly's show in recent years...and all I hear people say about his shows from people who attend...

some people are going to dig that ..and not really trip off of the things you pointed out....

definitely enjoying themselves. Even though they was VERY salty about the lateness. But he had the crowd on their feet singing along. It's just that after seeing all the other acts bringing the real thing, it was a HUGE difference seeing him basically doing karaoke.

http://theurbandaily.com/2531145/r-kelly-upsets-macys-music-festival-fans-crowds-leave-in-droves/

This is an example of when things go wrong they sometimes go really wrong and really fast. Last night in Cincinnati, OH Paul Brown stadium was filled with tens of thousands of people who were not happy campers when the show at the Macy’s Music Festival was delayed by up to an hour and a half depending upon who you ask. All because R. Kelly was not in the building ready to move when the preceding act singer Kem was done with his set.

The crowd had already been sitting in the Stadium for performances by Leela James, Morris Day And The Time, Fantasia and Kem. The day had turned to night and fans were beginning to feel the exhaustion of the day when they started to notice that Kelly was late and no one was saying anything about it. They slowly moved from a sentiment of anticipation to one of frustration, irritation and for some down right anger.

Fans started to slowly chant “Bring Ya Ass Out” which was a play on lyrics of Kelly’s in his Trapped In The Closet series. When this didn’t work in their favor as Kelly had yet to arrive and it was after Midnight, some did the only thing they knew to do…they left. And as the trickle became an actual stream of people leaving eventually there was a mass exodus of upset fans leaving the venue.

Organizers eventually sent the show’s host up to stop both the hemorrhaging of patience and fans looking to make their escape but the crowd unceremoniously turned on her as if R. Kelly’s delay was of her doing. Ever the professional Faith Daniels (Whom was actually one of the brightest spots in the entire festival weekend) was not shook by the Boo’s from the crowd and continued to maintain a calm, bubbly demeanor as only the very best hosts could. It was a mistake to send her out there instead of the Santangelo Group addressing the concert goers personally. Many felt if they could take money from the concert goers then they should address their concerns personally.

However, no explanation was ever given as to why Kelly was late getting on stage and even when he finally arrived to sing at about 1 am, still not even an apology was given to the crowd by Kelly or anyone else. Fans took to social media in outrage and in a very big way!

from the night before (and once again Charlie SMASHED) because there was nothing going on at all in the stadium - no DJ spinning or anything.

But I wasn't even mad about the lateness - it's just that you're late like than and then you go up on stage lip-syncing and singing on top of your own vocals? After an entire weekend of every act bringing the real deal? And a week after you played Pitchfork and gave a great show? SMH...
