Best voice
Excellent writer
A handful of classic songs
A handful of classic albums

What more could you want or ask for?!

Of course this is all my opinion but at the same time, it is what it is. Marvin was the greatest.

Voice wise I like Marvin more, only cats I think are on his level there would be Al Green or Sam Cooke.

and not to mention a great musician....they said on the celebrity crime files that he played drums, keyboards, and bass on some of the early motown classics and showed pictures of it with these instruments in his hands....

But R. Kelly?

Don't get me wrong, R. Kelly has been one of the best artist in music for the last 20 some years and probably the best R&B artist of the last 20 some years but I don't think he's got Marvin beat.

Marvin's got like six classics in my opinion:

I Want You
Here, My Dear (classic in my opinion)
Let's Get It On
What's Going On
Midnight Love
In Our Lifetime (classic in my opinion)

To me, Kelly's got at least 3 albums that I consider classic:

R. Kelly
12 Play
Chocolate Factory

Loveland (unofficial unreleased album)

Love Letter was a really good album, I'll have to go back and listen to it again because I haven't heard it since it first came out a couple of years ago though.

But I still don't think R. Kelly's best compares to Marvin's best. Plus, R. Kelly has yet to even release a "What's Going On" type of album.

because Jan Gaye loved the "Happy People" Album.

Marvin Gaye was at his best in the 70's IMO and I'm a Huge fan, however personally you could switch them and have the same artist and IMO if Marvin were alive today he would be working with R.Kelly and Hitting.

what's going on is a all time great album and I love it, etc.. however in alot of ways it was a fluke because he never reached those heights again.

he never made anymore records speaking on issues like that again.

Marvin was a Great 60's duet artist, 70's was his prime and peak with singles and albums, 80's was average at best.

R.Kelly was Great in the 90's and 00's two decades of dominance. he made a classic in love letter and a good album in write me back,.

factor in him writing and Producing for other acts known and unknown and having a strong 2 decade career, that is how only MJ and Stevie are his peers.

Marvin vocally, however R can hang and has surpassed him IMO, i have a music ratings system

mistermaxxx R.Kelly, Michael Jackson,Stevie wonder,Rick James,Marvin Gaye,El Debarge, Barry WHite Lionel RIchie,Isleys EWF,Lady T.,Kid creole and coconuts,the crusaders,kc sunshine band,bee gees,jW,sd,NE,JB

I wouldn't say it was a "fluke" but rather an album like a Thriller; he didn't need to even try to repeat it because the album is one of those moment in time type of albums. Marvin captured a moment in a bottle and yet that moment is timeless because that album still speaks to the times of today. He got it right with that album and it's a standard in my opinion.

I can understand if his 80's period is considered "average" but I'd say Marvin was excellent after struggling for a few years because Midnight Love was a huge comeback and it proved that Marvin could upgrade his music, still be himself and still stand up among the Michaels, Princes, Luthers, and Lionels of the 80's. Aside from the drugs, Marvin was coming back full circle with his music because Midnight Love was a strong comeback for an artist who had been around since the 60's and we all know how fast music and in particular Black music changes. What's cool for one minute, is wack the next minute.

Although I don't like all of his work, I can't front on R. Kelly's writing and producing. It's very impressive considering the work for himself as well as other artists.

i mean MJ had a blueprint with destiny, off the wall, triumph and then it lead to thriller plus his side projects lead up to it.

Marvin the 3-4 years prior to Whats going on didn't have that kind of material in his cannon until then.

Marvin followed up nicely with trouble man the soundtrack, however he didn't do what Stevie Wonder did and stay in that lane.

Curtis mayfield stayed in that lane as well.

Marvin in the late 70's to the early 80's was trying to channel RIck James. he wanted that energy and he went after it.

Marvin wanted to have what Lionel RICHIE had and a whole lot of other artists. Marvin never embraced his own career.

anyway having listened and followed both careers I give R.Kelly the edge because his longevity and him being able to bridge so many gaps speaks to that IMO.

Gaye had more cross over in his career in hindsight which is a fact, however Great songs and timeless, I feel Marvin gaye is a Musical Genius and even more so as a vocalist, however his albums to me were better in the 70's, his 60's albums were somewhere between Johnny Mathis and tax write offs.

He didn't his voice until the late 60's and he hit it right in the 70's.

i got Marvin all time in my top 10. however I feel R.Kelly has done more and passed him by and been more versatile.

mistermaxxx R.Kelly, Michael Jackson,Stevie wonder,Rick James,Marvin Gaye,El Debarge, Barry WHite Lionel RIchie,Isleys EWF,Lady T.,Kid creole and coconuts,the crusaders,kc sunshine band,bee gees,jW,sd,NE,JB
