"Ka - The Night's Gambit out tomorrow July 13th (link)"

http://www.complex.com/music/2013/07/brooklyn-rapper-ka-set-to-release-the-nights-gambit-on-july-13

After making waves in 2012 when he dropped his well recieved album, Grief Pedigree, Ka is back this year with his new album, The Night's Gambit. The Brooklyn rapper will be dropping the album on July 13.

He won't just be selling it like a normal release, he's doing it old school style and taking it to the streets: Starting at 2 PM, he'll be selling the album at 406 6th Ave in Brooklyn, which is where the Fat Beats store used to be. Check out the flyer below and be sure to stop by if you're in New York.

took me a minute to get used to his rhyme patterns and schemes, but these beats combing with that gravelly voice...it works.

the beat for jungle is crazy... some "get lost in your thoughts while driving" music....

same with knighthood....

still cant get with the no drum movement though...im hoping marci beaucoup isnt full of shit like that

Didn't really get the first album and thought he sounded sleepy on the songs I heard with Roc. Couldn't even get into the first single after seeing the video but listening to this...man he sets the table so well. The production's so on point and his rapping really is one of a kind. This should have been released six months from now but either way this is a great project. Like everyone else said...really has this dark, introspective, lonely vibe that you don't see much in music these days

The beats (I might as well call them soundtracks given how he seldom uses actual drums) are like backdrops to a painting that he's describing. The stories and narratives are textbook Ka at this point (clever similes/metaphors, stream of consciousness rap) and work quite well with his sonic textures. Some of them aren't even beats at all (Peace Ahki, 30 Pieces of Silver) but still leave a hell of an impression.

My favorite tracks: Soap Box, Knighthood, Off The Record, Jungle

Not a single skipper on the whole thing (though only 11 tracks long).

their approaches are much different imo, if complimentary

first, he doesn't SOUND like roc

second, his perspective seems a lot more serious &, frankly, substantial than roc's

roc says a lot of kind of catchy, funny type stuff...i think ka has more depth & paints more vivid pictures than roc

and im not saying any of this to shit on roc tho it should be pretty clear which one i prefer

they're not like clones, but i dont know how you can say that they're not pretty damn similar
but i also think rocky is just a C$Y knockoff, and cats on here think im crazy for that too, so its whatever.
im just saying, if i want that vibe that ka brinks, ima listen to roc
if i want that vibe that rocky brings, ima listen to c$y
in both cases, i think the latter FAR outshines the former, and i personally dont even think its debatable that those pairings are in the same ballparks sonically, style-wise, delivery, content, everything.

Is it possible to paint in broader, less-insightful strokes than what you are saying here?

Roc's character is a pimp, a hustler at "the top of the pyramid" as he says himself. His character is rarely exposes any emotions, never takes a loss and is untouchable by peons. Said character is extremely vain, smokes a lot of high grade marijuana, drinks heavily, rides around in all manner of luxury vehicles and consorts with bosses.

Ka's character is a soldier, a guy who is at best one or two rungs off the ground floor of the drug game corporate structure. He is only vaguely aware of said corporate structure as he is mostly concerned with the basic elements of survival on the streets. His emotions are the heart of his story, his losses are many, he knows he can be touched. He never/rarely mentions his own intoixcation, luxury vehicles or fly gear.

They rap over the same production is pretty much the only logical thing that you can say. And that is true, 100%.

But if you listen to their catalogues and come away with the opinion that Ka is a Roc knockoff then you are missing a lot.

just the whole vibe of his and Roc's stuff.

to me, it feels difficult and NoDoz-y just for the sake of pushing away anyone who doesn't want to hear it.

Which is fine, there was a dark period when I was really into Grindcore, so I get the "get the fuck away if you don't want this" mindset.

The way Roc and KA do it just doesn't work for me. It's naptime music.

You shoulda just left it at "boring, it does nothing for me" because your clumsy attempts at analysis only reveal that either you didn't really listen to it or you are not very insightful.

there was no attempt at being analytical, but the approach taken by these two does feel very "we started this shit twenty years ago and y'all never gave a fuck about us so this is just for us, fuck anyone looking for a good time, you're either on our side before the record starts or you never were" attitude to how they make their albums.

that's conjecture though, I'm not pretending to be right. just a kid bored by two old heads.

You don't like the album, totally fine, it's obviously not really something that is meant to appeal to everyone.

However, your conjecture is an attempt to analyze the motivations of the music's creators and taken as such, it strikes me as completely lacking.

You are transposing some "I'm mad at the industry" idea of yours onto them for reasons I cannot fathom and you have given no evidence for. Roc was spitting the same rhymes when he was doing records with Busta and Pete Rock. Ka has openly said that he is glad he found success now because he hadn't come into his own yet during the brief period in the 90s where he was connected to Natural Elements.

Now, is it not far more likely that Roc makes beats the way he does because he likes them? And Ka has openly said that hearing Roc's production inspired him, so is it not likely that he ALSO just enjoys this type of minimalist production?

Could it be that both are motivated to make the type of music that they do because that is the type of music they want to listen to? And that a positive response from fans and critics has led them to continue down that path?

Or should we assume that they are "mad at the industry" and decided their best revenge was to make so-called "drumless beats" and rhyme over them in a no-frills fashion?

Like I said, you don't like/get/feel the music, no one will be surprised. It's niche stuff. But leave all that extra stuff out unless you actually have a good idea what you are talking about or some insightful analysis with which to back it up.

I am not a Waka Flocka fan but I am not going to just start hypothesizing that he raps the way he does because he is "mad at East Coast rap so he decided to yell incoherently on his albums as a fuck you to Nas"

I see the appeal, just as you see the niche.

Errol Walton Barrow said ( http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=2837987&mesg_id=2837987&page= ), "Roc Marciano is a cynical fetishist," and that is just about what I mean. Whether that's the INTENTION of the art - and I would buy most arguments that say it isn't - that is how I hear it.

But I'm not trying to argue my point, because it's certainly personal and fickle. Just posting.

77. ""Drumless Production""
In response to Reply # 0

Ripe for a remix LP maybe?

Anybody know of a Black Album treatment on Reloaded or any Ka LPs?

Would the shit even sound good with Black Milk or Jake One drums underneath it? Or would it totally take away from the vibe and mood of the music & lyrics?

i havent heard reloaded tho

im still irked by the idea that the production is "drumless"

ppl are only saying that bc drums are so prominent in rap production

Oh I feel you.. but i'm not gonna lie. I do usually need that blap to keep me engaged with a piece of music.

There's a time and place for everything, and these artists make a conscious choice of showcasing lyrics, samples, and mood over hard hitting beats. I don't think there's anything wrong with that at all. It just isn't something for everybody at all times.

his previous album Grief Pedigree was one of my favorite albums the year it came out.

if you've heard Roc Marciano's last two albums, you've heard him before.

now that the facts are out of the way, lemme let you get your educated troll on.

peace, brah.
