ive been really surprised as ive been mentioning him to folks this week - i really dont know anyone who's even HEARD of him.
i mean, i know hes not big by any stretch, but theres a number of my friends who i thought would at least have him on their radar even if they hadn't really checked him out yet.

Maybe things should move over here, but...

Anyhow,

I REALLY dig this album. One of my favorite of the year. Everyday a different song is stuck in my head.

The Innocent
Her Favorite Song
Crime
Wine Glass Woman
Corsican Rose

Are my favorites though. So far.

I admit, I got into him after Tuxedo. His "Gangsta luv" remix was "cute" as well.

I feel like he's continuing the legacy of Eric Tagg, Bobby Caldwell, and Michael McDonald, that Blue Eyed Soul with dope ass chord changes in his songs...all unpredictable changes at that

Has anyone seen one of the concerts? Just wondering if since he's opening for them, he doesn't get much time to play. I think I'll wait until he's the main act.

17. "CONCERT REVIEW"
In response to Reply # 0

saw him last night - album release concert/party type of deal
bowery ballroom, NYC

I gotta say, this crept right in to my top 5 concerts ive seen in my 10 years in new york.
the thing that makes a concert really special for me, is when its a special show for the artist, and it shows in their performance
some other examples being sharon jones & the dap-kings playing the apollo for the first time, jay-z RD 25th anniv concert at radio city, amy winehouse's first N.american performance at joe's pub ---- ive seen all those cats do other shows - but i never saw them play their hearts out like i did on those nights - thats the way it was for Mayer last night. It was the night before his major label debut, concert in new york city, his parents were there watching, he did the Today show that morning, you know? so not a normal day for him. he was really happy about this moment in his life and you could tell.
the show started off OK. he led off with Robot Love, which is probly my least favorite song on the album, and he played a LOT of old stuff too (i was expecting it to be more new-centric), so i was mildly put off at first, but it just built and built, and the show just kept getting tighter and tighter and better with each song.
trying to recall which tracks he played off the new record:
robot love - crime - corsican rose (my fave) - i sort of remember designer drug being played - stars are ours - her favorite song (with LARGE PROFESSOR dropping in and spitting his verse from the remix)
and the kicker...
after his encore of barry white's Playing Your Game, Baby - which transitions into Just Aint Gonna Work out (crazy hearing him transition from such a low pitch to such a high one via that segue)....i think this has been a standard encore as of late. but THEN...
he played Reach Out Richard.....TO HIS FATHER SITTING IN THE BALCONY. jeezus. i think that song is just ok on record - its TOO steely dan for me. but he destroyed this track live. his vocal tone was smoother than it had been the whole night. it was just fantastic.

When OKP's do their top 10 lists for the year this album should appear on more than a few of them.

Exactly how I feel. His voice seems much stronger now. Much slicker production too.

Gonna have to buy this one and the second LP too.

I been killing it since it leaked last week and it's pretty much owned my eardrums ever since.

Backseat Lover
Crime
Reach Out Richard
The Innocent
Corsican Rose
Her Favorite Song
Where Does This Door Go
Designer Drug
They Don't Know
The Only One

all really good songs, even the older joints that have been out for a minute like "designer drug" and "her favorite song" are still fresh to me.

The strong cuts are REALLY strong and the album cuts are not too annoying. I just feel like some of these productions were not meant to his type of voice.

Anyway, its a good album.

that kendrick pops up as the only rap verse on 2 of the best soul releases of the year (this and the new quadron record)
im a pretty big KL fanboy, but honestly i dont think he fits on either of those records very well. while his verses certainly weren't WTF moments on either record, they still just felt like "lets get a verse from the hottest rapper right now" - i dont think that was actually the motivation - but it could feel like that from a side glance.

It's always weird when an album is basically 100% clean, aside from that one song, or in this case, one verse.

Quik and Hi-C did that to Christopher Williams album back in 2001...came cussin HARD at that, to where you can't even edit it out smooth.

thing about it...dude really isn't a singer per se...but since jump...dude has performed live with musicians...and real people singing background vocals...

even if he sin't Michael McDonald or somebody...it just sounds better when you do it live

http://www.soulbounce.com/soul/2013/07/mayer_hawthorne_performs_a_favorite_on_late_night_with_jimmy_fallon.php

just no excuse for people who are born and bred singers to be using all those backing tracks and pre-recorded stuff....

if this dude can do it...why they cant?

Sometimes, an artist having awareness of vocal limitations is a helluva gift because he/she may focus on making sure to handle the other parts of songs even better. It forces them to flesh themselves out if they want to make good music. And Mayer has obviously been studying, learning, stealing, adding, adjusting, figuring out how to complete songs and lyrics, etc, etc. I know he's gotten better in just about every way since the first stuff I heard from him. And I was a fan of A Strange Arrangement. I knew it was kinda dry and spare, but I dug it for the mood of the sad songs. And he's still very hiphop in that his borrowing is heavy-handed/obvious/not sneaky, etc. But...just like with hiphop, when the execution level of the new song is where it needs to be, folks will roll with it. And maybe...just maybe...folks who 'know they can sing' feel like they can always lean on/hide behind the singing...so they don't worry about coming up with chants, bridges, instrumentation, etc. And that 'other' stuff is what makes this album work the way that it does...at least for me.

I didn't believe the hype but I saw him this weekend (I had to see Quadron as the opening act) in Brooklyn and had a great time.

He's a little schticky with his onstage persona and presentation but damn it's fun.

And he's very comfortable in his Hall and Oates/Boz Scaggs 21st century blue eyed soul, easy listing lane.

I'm copping last years album immediately.

Saw live in 2010 at a spot in VA Beach (during the middle of a monsoon, I must add) when he was still signed w/ Stones Throw.

He brightened the spot up!

Great, positive vibe. And he has one of the most diverse audiences I've ever seen. A little bit of everybody was in the house.
