My vote is for Nas, not really even on merits of rapping or beats, I just loved that record when it came out. The Jay record definitely didn't strike me as hard upon first impression.

On Nas album he went right back to what he did in the past....

Jay at least is trying to take it to a different level....sometimes it may not hit that level but thats what being an artist is...

Im sure as he counts the 5 mil from samsung he is not stressing what people think...

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Shittiest mixing on a mainstream release ever. Compressed so hard the attack of the kicks is gone. The new Jay-z has really good beats on more than half of it. I require kicks that knock.

MCHG has better production, but the rhymes are basically just satisfactory for his standards. Nas brought great rhymes, and better production than usual.

21. "i don't think the nas vs. jay-z comparisons are totally apt"
In response to Reply # 0

The comparisons are steeped in beef and tradition (both being NYC MCs from the same era, who have been considered to be the best by different people at different times), but don't hold much water when you look at their recent output.

In terms of rapping, they're damn near opposites. Nas is the quintessential writer; dotting verses with extreme visual detail and personal exposure, sometimes at the expense of staying on beat. Jay-Z on the other hand, is known for not writing at all. His rhymes rely more on memorable one-liners, slick catchphrases, and an uncanny harmony with the track. He's cool, wealthy, and winning above all else, and rarely reveals much in the way of depth or beyond-the-surface personality. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, depending on one's personal taste.

Musically, Nas is famous for seemingly not giving a shit about what he raps over, much to his albums' and legacy's detriment. He's tried his hand at making contemporary hits here and there, enough to prove that's not his lane. When coupled with focused executive production (MC Serch, Trackmasters, Salaam Remi & No ID, whoever the fuck at Columbia compiled 'The Lost Tapes'), he can churn out classics head and shoulders above everything else in the rap marketplace. When left to his own devices, he produces albums that are universally disappointing, but showing just enough flashes of brillance to keep people anticipating a full-length release worthy of his still-potent talents.

Jay-Z, by comparison, lives and dies by the hit. Not to say he doesn't have deep album cuts, but his career is mainly defined by keeping up with trends and making catchy records that will please radio and a wide range of fans. He's relentlessly dependable, at the risk of being boringly predictable.

I haven't yet spent enough time with 'Magna Carta Holy Grail' to form a fully-baked opinion, but after my first few listens, I'd say it's essentially just another Jay-Z album. It has some legitimate head nodders ("Picasso Baby", "FUTW", "Somewhere in America", "Heaven"), mainstream-ready tracks ("BBC, "Part II"), some snoozers ("Holy Grail", "Tom Ford", "FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt", "La Familia"), and a surprisingly revealing moment ("Jay-Z Blue"). The production sounds expensive and current enough, and the raps are typical Jay-Z fare. There's little new ground covered, but it's mostly satisfying enough.

Meanwhile, 'Life is Good' is proof that when steered in the right direction, Nas is in a different class entirely. He raps with an intensity of several bygone eras (although I'd argue the same goes for Black Thought), and uses tracks that rely on updating classic-style breakbeats with modern flourishes. Even his supposed radio tracks ("Nasty", "The Don", "Daughters") sound nothing like those of his peers. Yes, I'm pretending "Summer on Smash" doesn't exist. He somehow managed to produce an album that avoids most of his bad habits (undeserved martyrdom, tired paranoia, strange and/or half-baked concepts, mediocre beats), and instead puts his strengths (unmatched attention to detail, revealing introspection, rich storytelling, wide topic range) on full display.

When comparing the two albums, you're comparing a triumphant record to one that's "not bad". And when comparing Nas vs. Jay-Z, you're comparing artists who started similarly, but now have very different methods and aims for their music.

Never thought I'd see the day. Nas is my favorite rapper but I never thought I'd see the day when he would pull pass Jay on some "oh what up" and keep it moving with the lyrics while big homie is starting to stall out.

I went back and listened to American Gangster and man that was the last time I was wowed by Jay. The title track at the end is Jay at his finest. That flow is apparently GONE and in its place is this "uhh" DOA flow which is eh to embarrassing at times.

Nas outspits Jay so crazy these days that there's really no comparison to even
make. Nas writes better songs. The only thing that could make it any better
is if Nas rhymed on the better beats from Holy Fail. Like, what Nas would have
done with Picasso, FUTW, Crown etc, would have shat so hard on the bullshit
Jay put over those same tracks. I mean, what level is Nas not killing Jay on right now, musically?
Choose any.

A Jay vs Nas post can only lead to extreme bias from both "sides" if you will.

A Kendrick vs Nas post will be far more topical.

spitter like Kendrick already answers this poll, because Magnum Garbage has
no business in the same record store as Good Kid Maad City. That's a very
well put together album with great imagery, thoughtful lyrics and concepts, etc.
Holy Fail is a guy tossing out some sub par. Life Is Good was a vet
doing what vets SHOULD be doing... showing these young cats what years of
perfecting your craft sounds like.

And naw, this ain't about no bias either way, because I gives no fucks about a
rivalry. Life Is Good is just a better album than Jay's high profile turd. This is
a bad comparison for one reason only... and that reason is that Holy Fail is such
a piece of lazy trash that it shouldn't ever be put in the conversation with actual
good albums that had real effort put into them. Holy Fail is full of scraps.
Like, I'm offended this nigga is gonna put this out for sale. It made sense to
be forcing it on niggas via Samsung, because the only way this album is worth
having is if you get something that's actually of value alongside it.

Nas's rapping on "The Don" alone >>>>>>>>>>> Magnum Garbage. No bullshit.

If the two emcees are such polar opposites then the comparions isn't useful.

You might as well be comparing Life Is Good to something from Two Chains.

They've both made careers of being lyricists. Nas is a better lyricist at this
point.... by miles. The gap is because Nas left Jay's sluggish ass in the dust.

2 Chainz ain't tryna be no spitter. He's a clown... a musical comedian.
This is not that kind of difference.
This is 2 lyricists.

But the funny thing is... Despite the fact that Nas never was too strong in the commercial
"club song" lane, they were both good at song structure even though they're lyricists.
At this point, Jay's song structuring even sucks. Like, I don't even know what
the fuck is even convincing him that these songs are complete. Why's he
stopping mid-song and releasing this halfway shit? Nas is outrapping him AND
making better songs now. It may have been arguable at one point, but that
shit is clean blowout in 2013.
If some unknown dropped Holy Fail, they would create ZERO buzz for themselves.

Yep, Nas is just the better MC at this point just as he was the better MC when they both started their careers. Jay-Z was the better artist at one point and now he isn't. Nas LP is more focused, complete and just better.

>Jay-Z was
>the better artist at one point

If someone feels Jay had better albums at one point then the most I can give him is being a better executive producer and/or better at making hits.

The height of the comparisons is obviously the Stillmatic/Blueprint time frame and you have some who say Blueprint is better and some who say Stillmatic is better.

Regardless of what ones opinion is, if you re-format Stillmatic with the songs from the Lost Tapes, I really don't think it's close.

Intro
Got Urself A Gu
The Flyest
My Way
You're Da Man
Rewind
One Mic
Doo Rags
2nd Chilhood
No Idea's Original
Purple
Black Zombies
What Goes Around
Nothin Lasts Forever

I mean, that's an amazing album right there. And lets not forget we could do this with the I Am/I Am bootleg/Nastradamus as well.

And I'm sure people will say its easy to play "what if" but the difference in this situation is that these Nas songs actually exist and they're out there for us so it makes it very easy to come to the conclusion that these album, if executive produced properly, would be incredible and to the level of Illmatic and It Was Written. Then throw in Life Is Good and that's 4 unbelievable albums with the addition of Gods Son who some also love.

So whatever ones opinions on Nas' actual studio albums are, the fact that we still have all of this other material to pull from adds to his greatness.
