in that they know how to emulate what they grew up listening to and can re-create it with great accuracy but they seem to have a hard time injecting their "voice" into that style (or amalgamation of styles). if they can't put their own spin on something, why am i listening to them in the first place? may as well just listen to the stuff they are copying

my taste is mostly arbitrary though.
some days i feel like listening to Kanye.
some I feel like Future.
some i feel like Shabazz Palaces.
some i don't even feel like listening to rap. usually i listen to dance music there.
those are just some examples but it just depends on the moment really.

there's some folks i don't like their shit overall, but i think they can make good music sometimes. J. Cole
some folks i just have a problem w/ their current direction. Kid Cudi
then there's some folks i just flat out don't like them as artists and think they suck. that's Joey Badass to me.

That's cool, not mad at your tastes at all

But you're a chubby 15 year old white girl

I like your moxie, but I'm going to remind you

your views better

Good for you

He can actually rap and is gaining new styles and
a better ear for beats and song-making...dude just
turned 18

He's a full 7-8 years younger than Kendrick Lamar,
and 13 years younger than Danny Brown...he might
have been rushed onto the spotlight a tad, but he
doesn't even have an album yet...he's doing what he
should be: making lots of different songs, trying out
styles, working with different beatmakers...he essentially
has a bunch of mixtapes at this point

And he's easily a better pure rapper than a nigga like
J.Cole, who was older when he hit the scene

I mean, A$AP Rocky is famous for being from Harlem
and biting Houston rappers, for god's sakes (and not
being a good rapper). If you'd rather that than Joey,
I don't know what to tell you.

You must have felt so betrayed once you found out Danny Brown gets blow jobs. Give Danny another chance though. He can actually rap well.

God bless you for being excited about a 19 year old doing an O.C.* impressions over Styles of Beyond** instrumentals though. You're proof that marketing works!

Know that I am a fan of Joey Bada$$:

Its pretty much exactly what I expected it to be (which is not a bad thing at all). Its good and (probably) rivals all of his past mixtapes (but his best work is still easily 1999). There isn't any notable huge improvement here, but thats ok because he is already dope. Best songs IMO: Alowha, Sweet Dreams, Sorry Bonita (really glad to see Joey using Oddisee beats). Worst song IMO: Right On Time. The first song, Alowha, samples a song from one of my favorite brazillian pop/experimental records: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVIzZm31_1g.

...but feared that no one could get it right. Joey has successed!!! This is a rhymers album. The beats don't overpower the rhymes and sometimes they just kinda take a nap while joey does some (mostly successful) lyrical gymnastics.

I however do not see how he is going to turn this style of his into any type of major release or "commercially appealing" album. Then again that's his problem not mine, I just enjoy the music.

his popularity is amazing. like im mad happy for him

dude has done exactly what hes wanted to do, which is a sound that isn't really in the mainstream anymore, and got famous off of it

the other day my 13 yr old cousin threw on some tracks from summer knights man.....joey is BIG

hopefully when he eventually signs to a label that label lets him DO HIM and doesn't make him put out some radio bullshit

I didn't like chuuwee's 90s albums very much. Those felt like well trod territory where as I feel like no one has made an album that sounds like this in 20 years (though many have tried).

I really think Chuuwee does this style best, but his voice betrays him.

No snark... because I remember you said Ab-soul was better than
Kendrick, which is just silly, but maybe you were just trying to give
Soulo some shine... just like maybe you're just trying to give Chuwee
some shine.

There's nothing silly about my viewpoint that I happen to like Ab-Soul better than Kendrick Lamar. I think they're all very dope, however. I don't call your viewpoints silly. Don't assume mine are either.

Now, I'm not trying to give anyone shine. I just happen to like how Chuuwee raps and how Ab-Soul raps and yes, Joey Badass can rap his ass off too.

more bannon if anyone is interested:

http://www.djbooth.net/index/mixtapes/entry/lee-bannon-dummies/

what strikes me about him is his ability to recall and evoke certain styles/sounds without sounding like a cheap imitation (see: mac miller, asap, sgp and crew). "'95 til infinity" sounds like a lost souls of mischief or funkdoobiest or b-side, and that's about the highest compliment one can pay for that beat imo

I have more thoughts on my review of it here troyismajor.com/?p=446

But to sum it up: its a good mixtape in my opinion and he did a lot of things right sonically and lyrically.

Much improved over 1999

The beats are great and Joey is still finding him self lyrically and conceptually, but he's 18. Reminds me of some BCC, but less gully.

I agree with others that some of his buddies in ProEra may actually be better, but this is solid. The irrational critiques of Joey border on unfair to haterish really
