"Yo! These recordings need remastering "

They need that big sound with the volume bumped up :

Prince's warner brother recordings.
Janet's A&M recordings.
Did they pump up those recent Alexander O Neal reissues?
The Times first three albums.
The Jesse Johnson A &M albums.
Vesta's A&M recordings.

I will add more later. Feel free to add to the list. Come on record labels! Put them in digi packs too.

CONTROVERSY
1999
PURPLE RAIN

These remasters have either been released on vinyl or as HD downloads:
https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=artistdetail&id=10774

The only sad part about these is that while it seems he doesn't mind reissuing them to specialized markets (i.e. those who will actually buy it), they haven't been given wide release. With next year being the 30th anniversary of PURPLE RAIN, will Prince have a change of heart? Who knows, but for now, it's only these three albums.

...by some studio kats who took an old mastered version and just boosted the volume up on the songs, to me a real remastering is getting the "ORIGINAL MASTERS" or the original reel-to-reel/DAT or whatever Prince recorded and tracked the music on to and then get an engineer to remaster it and maybe put it in true stereo in today's level standards.

I hate when I see companies so-called taking a digital copy of an album and boosting the volume up on it and stickering and passing it off as a remaster; that's like me taking a 128kbps song, burn it to a disc, then take the song off the disc, boost up the volume and save it at 320kbps; the original was still at 128kbps quality.

Now the songs they put on the Ultimate Collection, double disc, those songs came from the real original mastertapes, you can hear the difference.

These new remasters are taken from Warner Bros.' safety copies, which is "just as good"/"good enough" but not directly from Prince's own master recording. Also, one *can* remaster from a second generation master and still get away with it, as that had been the way most remasters were done in the last 20 years, with a few exceptions.

The people involved with these Prince remasters did more than just raise peak levels and say "voila, here's a remaster", because any and all of us can get Exact Audio Copy and do the same thing, or add a bass filter and go "ooh, that added a bit of weight".

Trusting my own ears, though, the remasters that do exist sound "good enough" for now. He would have been better off doing these himself in the late 90's when there was still an active market, but maybe he'll prove us wrong. Or maybe he will not care.

All you have to do is have a good system and turn the volume up. There is no difference trust me. I have done tons of listening tests and you can't ABX it so you can't tell if they are level matched. And the volume bump chops off the top of the waveforms. This just may look bad and nothing more but I would rather be safe and have the waveform look full. My opinion on the matter. If it's not loud enough your system is probably weak not the CD

Yes! you have not done ABX testing with masters and mastered versions. WHen you perceptually match the levels the human ear can not detect a difference.

Try ABX testing and then come back and tell me I'm wrong when you fail it everytime. I have done the testing I don't need some opinion. I did objective testing.

Using maximizers IS transparent so I guess you might want it to be loud for Ipods but personally I would like the waveforms to be FULL for preservation of a historical document.

You can always maximize a master but using an expander to get the peaks back is a bad idea.

Best to stick with masters that don't exceed digital clipping. They should be close to the premaster but normalized.

Yeeeeeeeeeeees there is a difference. I compare older releases to current ones. The older ones sound like they are whispering. I wasted alot of money.

You did not perceptually match them before comparing. If you bring up the level on the old one and match it to the new one there should be no difference.

The problem is there will be different EQ and you are comparing apples to oranges. You need to have access to unmastered masters to do the real tests

I have done the tests and humans fail to detect the difference in an ABX test.

You can get free ABX software for Foobar music player and try it with your own masters. BUT REMEMBER you MUST perceptually match the 2 songs first

I know you think you are right but you are wrong maximizers are designed to be TRANSPARENT.

What you have to do is bring down the volume on the loud one to match the soft one. After you match them within 1 or 2 perceptual dB you can not ABX it. Everything comes back as a guess with the proper objective testing.

Until you do ABX testing you are just probably doing it wrong and giving a subjective opinion.

Strange things happen when you perceptually match levels. Humans can not detect certain changes it just error corrects in your brain and makes them the same

the volume and EQ adjusting it would take if you cared about maintaining the same fidelity is annoying.

alot of DJs don't care so they play one mastered song party's jumping and follow it up with an unmastered song and you can now hear people by the bar talking about the game...lol

I dunno if something like DJ Decks (Serato but cheaper) has replay gain which scans and matches levels or how you deal with that.

It probably isn't that hard compared to normal records really which are all over the map. You just use your ears. It's an artform nobody said it would be cake.
