Pleasant song...But "The Girl is Mine" is the weakest link....

Still, it's tough to find a more seamless album than Thriller....

----You need a laxative for all of that hate...

The girl is mine was corny they should have left State of SHock on the Album because that song banged...

you better ask somebody, you see turkeys who grew up with black folks on pop radio and everywhere don't even know what it was like back in the day when radio wasn't playing hardly that many black acts.

i can always tell a young turkey who wasn't around because radio was different ball game back then.

the girl is mine was two legends battling on a song and it worked. it was a introduction cut and it was needed to break at radio and it did its job period.

if you don't know how the racial dynamics were then, you outta ask somebody or listen

I made mention in Maxxx's Bruno Mars cover post in GD that got eaten in the crash that I had always wanted to bust out an acoustic cover of it. It's just a perfect pop song.

i never liked either of those songs.

i'd add an MJ version of Rufus & Chaka's 'Ain't Nobody' (Quincy wanted that song for Thriller but the songwriter had already promised it to Rufus) and either include the long version of 'Billie Jean' or add 'Niteline'.

fuck you.

the song itself is novelty mess. even as a kid at the PEAK of Thrillermania i disliked that song. always skipped it when playing the album. except maybe to hear the laugh at the end.

and 'Baby Be Mine' didn't do much for me.

in fact, i wasn't too keen on side 1 of that album for the most part. i did like 'Wanna Be Startin Somethin' though. i'd play that and then flip the record over to hear side 2.

fuck you.

"Thriller" the song has hokey instrumentation and was saved by the video. The chorus is ear candy but it's really weird for a single. I really like that people made songs that awkward back in the day tho.

thriller used that bass line to carry it. it was better than starlight the original title and song was. had it been that instead of thriller it would have been Sandy Duncan cheesy lite afternoon dancing.

thriller in the video worked with the instrumental part which made it work for the groove and it was sold as a groove there and it worked.

Niteline was a cute dinky 2nd/3rd tier reject cut which might have worked as an outtake to a "revenge of the nerds" movie, however not to be a main track on a important album like thriller.

thriller worked as a album track. baby be mine? turkey you is a hater that is a great track and IF wanted to have a strong Jerri Curl audience and was cool with a O bryan,El debarge, New edition RIgt on Mgazine, Rock and Soul/Black Beat and Fresh Magazine demographic then that would have been the cut and route to stay and go in.

ain't nobody was cool, however it doesn't fit on no thriller at all, it worked better for chaka.

billie jean long version was always tight.

however this is why MJ blew up and didn't end up with a Scott baio career as a music artist.

MJ did learn about quality control from Quincy if nothing else. don't put corn out there if you want to have classics.

even MJ was smart enough to avoid making that a B Side. there is a reason why there is a vault.

I'm amazed mike didn't even fuck with Bsides.

Can't get out of the rain was the only one and he didn't even bother redoing the background vocals for it, as they still said Game

it would be an insult for somebody to say your B Side is better than your album ya know what I'm saying? its cool outlet and MJ did have other b sides over the years.

someone put your hand out was a b side for Pepsi during the dangerous tour

MJ had one for Invincible caled "Shout

MJ wanted to make the best possible tracks for an album and not be stuck with using b level tracks to fill up space that was his mind set and i understand that.

because i like some of his outtakes and some of them are 3rd tier level on a good day. he has a few tracks that are near top tier and 2nd tier, however his best stuff already was released easily IMO

except i'm pretty sure MJ would've nailed 'Ain't Nobody'. since i learned that bit of history of the song i can't hardly listen to it w/o imagining MJ's vocal on that. i think it would've been awesome.

i probably would've put it on side 1 in place of 'Baby Be Mine' or on side 2 in place of 'Human Nature'. but i love 'Human Nature' just where it is. hell, i think side 2 is perfect. so i wouldn't mess w/that.

so yeah, 'Ain't Nobody' in place of 'BBM'. i'd have done it.

note: 'Ain't Nobody' was a number one JAM on the R&B chart and a top 40 hit on the Hot 100. i think most actual A&R's would take a #1 jam ('Ain't Nobody') over an album filler track ('Baby Be Mine') every time. but what do i know?

fuck you.

i wonder if Quincy would've put horns on it or gone w/the synth/guitar arrangement like Titelman used. i dunno how i'd feel about it w/horns.

QUincy Jones has said the tape splice was on purpose...

Thiller did not need the "radio cut"

Billie Jean ... Beat it.... Thriller.... Wanna be.. all of those songs were all crossover songs...

And Paul Mac was on Ebony and Ivory already ..

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

also say, say, say was the first song they cut back in 81. the girl is mine came after and that had something to do with the fact that Quincy's then wife Peggy Lipton use to go with Paul back in the day and a long story short it help with pushing the colab

that other song they did "the Man" was brutal to my ears, even blues clues" would turn that down with the quickness.

ebony and ivory was showcasing two Legends as was the girl is mine.

Paul Mccartney wanted a solo career in the adult sector of radio and he went there.

the sound of that song and vibe would have worked with Randy Crawford or Klique however i see why it got left off. and naw PYT was a good set up for the lady in my life. Human Nature is a stronger song lyrically than Carousal IMO. however it could have been a strong B Side if MJ went there IMO

"Say Say Say" is a better song than "The Girl is Mine"

And that's not shitting on "Girl is Mine." That jam is still a classic and a frequent cover when me and my boy play shows together. But I always thought that "say Say Say" just jammed harder.

thriller had a swing vibe of gumbo going on musically, say, say, say is alite hearted thing and i don't see where it would work or fit on thriller.

wanna be startin somethin for instance was cut back during the off the wall era and yet it wouldn't work on that album, so sometimes you wait until the next project.

MJ and Quincy had money tracks to choose from. that is a standard set there.

when Jesse wrote and Produced those two tracks on "dream street"? and I like Jesse a whole lot as a Musician and he had soem serious moments, however his best stuff to me was either for ta mara and the seen and especially "Nights like this" for After 7. that to me gave Jesse a whole new light as a writer and Producer IMO very underrated what he did with After 7

if he gave MJ a "Nights like this" type of cut then I'd co sign, however "jungle love" was good and it worked within the concept of the film and album, however it wasn't going to be MJ money track

another song from that album.

truth be told, i am not a big fan of the 'Thriller' video. i don't like the dancing very much and as a kid (and even now) i wasn't into MJ in that zombie make-up. or the other zombie stuff in that video. i much preferred 'Beat It' and 'Billie Jean' (and especially 'Can You Feel It').

i understand the world loves that video and all that. but if i could've changed anything about the album w/o the benefit of hindsight, i'd have cut that track and used something else. again, in my ideal world, MJ records 'Ain't Nobody' and that goes on the album in place of 'BBM'. or maybe in place of 'Thriller'. and now the album has a different name.

fuck you.

i saw it as a kid and i think it's part of what made me believe MJ was supernatural. i wasn't aware of t his belief until i was well into adulthood. but when i was a kid i thought MJ was supernatural in part b/c i saw that fire or peacock feather shooting out of his head. and then the sprinkling of the pixie dust all over the ppl and all that kind of imagery. LOL. 6 or 7 yr old me interpreted that as proof that MJ was more than human. and the sparkly socks and the glove and the lighting up of stuff in the 'Billie Jean' video...

LOL.

Man I could do a WHoLe thread about the supernatural powers of Mike.

But I cannot FUCK with that video at all.

Like

Don't watch it after dark type of steeze.

But considering it was before MtV , 1980, it's pretty fuggin amazing for a video.

Often wondered why it didn't get notice and recognition...but I'm sure because it's so Creepy. And whom ever did the sound design needs to be fired from life
