Nope, but he did become top 10 for me over time. 90s for me and my peers were simplified to Death Row, No Limit, Cash Money, Rap-A-Lot, UGK, Scarface and Screw Tapes. I was poor growing up so computers, internet and all that was foreign to me until 2007 and that's when I expanded my musical taste.

and its 100% true
I mean i guess hejira isn't a GLARING OMISSION from what one would expect me to have listened to but still when i heard it, as a joni mitchell fan (by blue and court & spark) i felt downright stupid for not having had the curiosity to listen to it earlier lmao

Perfectly said.
Everyone's introduced to music in unique ways and develops their own tastes, and when it's time for those tastes to expand we all feel like "shit I wish I heard this earlier," or "I should have heard this earlier," I'm sure...but there's only so much time in a day so none of us will ever listen to all the music we "should" in regards to our tastes, and like you said we end up playing a neverending game of catchup. Couldn't have put it better.
I mean my list of old AND new albums I want to hear grows at a rate about 50x that of albums I actually end up being able to find the time to listen to.
Big part of the issue, too, is that I like to absorb albums that I hear (as most of us do I'm sure) to allow myself to develop a thorough opinion of it, and also to continue to enjoy the albums and songs I really like. I try not to overplay tracks but I try and listen enough so I can really pick it apart because that's one of my favorite things to do with music. I like to pick out the samples, figure out meanings in the lyrics, etc. Again, I am far from alone, just saying, this is the type of thing which gives me even *less* time to hear all the music I would like to hear if I had unlimited time in which to do it.
It's frustrating but also proves rewarding because the music I *do* get to hear gets its proper attention.
i agree completely. i do the same thing. i always have a list of albums that im trying to check out. its never ending but its also important to spend time with stuff, some of my favorite records are stuff that i didnt even like that much on the first listen
I won't ever stop keeping lists of albums I want to hear cause it does kinda force me to prioritize them. So even if it's frustrating that I can't get to them all, at least I do end up listening to more of them because I keep a list and I say "Okay I NEED to hear this one" because of rave reviews from friends, or here, or whatever.
And - totally agree with your last point. A great example (and I feel awkward even admitting this) was Train of Thought. The first time I heard that album all the way through, I was kinda "meh, it's whatever" about it. I can't really even remember or explain why that was. I just remember having very lukewarm thoughts about it. Now it's in my top 7 favorite albums of all time. It didn't take much time after that first listen for it to grow on me, it happened quickly. But had I been one of those people who dismissed an album if I didn't like it on first listen I'd have lost out on years of listening, absorbing and picking apart one of the best hip-hop albums of our generation (IMO).

that one hit me immediately. its one of my favorite albums. period. its amazing. Kweli absolutely destroys that album in a way that few MCs have.
my two big ones that have grown on me would be OK Computer and Blowout Comb
initially i wasnt feeling them that much. especially OK Computer which was one of my first rock albums (i started out as a purely hip hop based listener then expanded crazily)
now they are one of my favorite records from their respective genres

not hearing an album for a while like, a friend of mine had never heard Entroducing, and i burned it for her and as i was giving it to her, i found myself getting really fucking jealous like, "man, i would LOVE to have the experience of listening to a record THAT amazing for the FIRST TIME right now."

Yea when I had to play catch up, It was really rough tryna cram in so much in the last 6/7 years and keep up with the new stuff. I had a real hard time catching up on 80s stuff but Kurtis Blow, Spoonie Gee Rakim and Chuck D stood out the most to me.
