"Whats the point of artists having vaults of music?"
Mon Jun-10-13 08:29 AM by Starks dunked on Bul

Prince
Dr. Dre
Pete Rock

We always hear about how these artists have vaults music, whats the point of it?

This music will never be shared with the public so whats the point of it?

Are they waiting for labels to make them an offer?

I do appreciate how Questlove shares his vault of music though.

...in the artist eyes. We might hear them and say yo that's that shit. BUt for the artist they aren't quite there yet, and the inspiration that got them started didn't last to see it through. Alternately the end result wasn't what they were going for. So there's incomplete tracks or tracks that dn't fit any where in the official catalog.

i even get why prince is so protective of his material.

but then again, i think it is a bit shirt sighted.
MJ never would have wanted us to see "this is it,"
but it was probably better for his legacy than the tour would have been.

it humanized him for a lot of people that forgot why
people loved him to begin with.

If they reach a point where that inspiration is lost, they are able to rely on a back catalog to fall back on. Or the music in the "vaults" can be used as rough notes towards future songs. It can also be a bit of insurance. Maybe sometimes, the songs didn't work within the context of what they were doing at the time, or they couldn't use it to place it within a context. Sometimes it's just random creations. If one can keep on creating, that's great.

the artist may have something they don't think is done yet.
hell, i suspect Stevie's "i can't help it" is something he had in the vaults
back from "music in my mind."

it sounds like it's from the same vein. but he either didn't finish it
or didn't think the vocals sounded right until he gave it to MJ.

sometimes i think prince writes a great song that sounds like a hit,
but he thinks it sounds to similar to his last hit. so it gets shelved.

i would love to go through my favorite artists vaults to hear songs at various stages of completion. and when they die, that stuff may come out.
i like the concept of vaults.

and most of what i hear from somebody's vault is cool to good, however hardly ever a money track. more like a spare tire that needs more air.

unless you got a Ottis Redding "sitting on the dock of the bay" in your vault then 9 times out of 10 the vault is going to be like geraldo riveria at Al capone's vault and nothing was there.

michael jackson put out all of his classic money tracks, yeah you might have 2-3 bangers in the vault however the rest is vaulted for a reason.

stevie i heard alot of things which musically are tight and yet some things are best left put away.

prince i've heard alot of his vault stuff and he got some jams and quite a few broken eggs in there.

r.kelly got some things and then other things which are either for fans or his own thing.

the other thing about vaults is we all romanticize a certain era and time and expect a prolific amount of tracks in a similiar vein and when we hear it, then its not quite the same.

the mystery, hype and pr are often more exciting than the actual finding i come to find imo

that makes me cringe especially his club tracks when he was working with any every rapper and alot of the auto tone tracks he did.

put it like this Bruh Loveland was a classic and 12 play 4th quarter was sinking aside from 2-3 tracks it was forgettable.

there i said it and I have heard alot of Kellz tracks and he has duds.

I don't Stan like that. He might be the Greatest Musical Genius of our time and the Baddest Musical dominant force over the past 20 plus years however it don't mean he ain't dropped wackness either he has done stuff that makes me cringe.

Rap. Just because I still have them on my computer, and would never ever ever just erase it.

Sometimes it's wild when you hear unfinished stuff that had potential but you couldn't figure out how to complete it, or what direction to go. Like..."the hook is GREAT....but the fuck do I do with the verses?" or even "that intro is amazing...but it just doesn't go anywhere after."

came out, some for songs that didn't, and it's crazy. A few of them are even on YouTube or somewhere online in good quality.

I notice common themes with them...strong elements in one way, but incomplete in a way that almost requires a brand new brain to take it to the level in needs to be at. For L.A. songs, the most common thing that would be dope was the bassline. But it would be like "yeah, this bassline is perfect...still needs some keys though." Another common thing was that the sounds would just sound dated, even if it was new...so it was like "should we use this or not?"

And in some cases, it just didn't work for the artists' image, and the company rejected it. I was playing this Snoop track here a LOT in High School - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4Vmwuh-nHE - him and Battlecat flipped Janet "Funny how time flies" and made it dope as hell...but they knew it was a helluva gamble to actually put on "Paid da cost."

It's a shame but at least some of those beats have been given to friends like J-Love and Alchemist but I've heard rumors of beats that he don't even remember making that he's given out to numerous rappers in the QB, but I think that's cause of him always being high on weed & dust thru the years.

What really gets me mad is the stories about J-Dilla making beats and if he doesn't like it, he will just turn the MPC off or delete it without saving or recording it first.

Not all music in some artist's vaults are songs they made just so it could go into the vault, most of the time artists create a lot songs but try to pick the best out of what they have at the moment when an album is due to be released; also artists are very critical of their music and if they feel a song isn't good enough they will vault it and maybe just maybe they will revisit it later and touch or polish it up to where they feel it's worth releasing even if it leaks and the fans love the way it sounds raw.

Record companies love when artists have unreleased material so they can bank off that artist when the artist isn't making music anymore, not on their label anymore, has to for-fill their contract, or dead.

What gets many listeners is why Purple Man, Dr.Orchestrate, & Soul Brother #1, seem to have more music in the vaults than what was put out by them; these kats are what you call perfectionists, they will only put out commercially what they feel is finished to their tastes and not anyone else, and also a lot of the time they love making music but hate the whole business side of things and basically will make music for the heck of it but never plan on releasing it except thru sharing with friends once in a while; but even then most people only hear a small percentage of what they have in the vaults, I'm the same way.
