"Can someone please put me onto Ray Charles?"

I've seen Ray the movie but I'd like to know even more about the man and his music. Are there any great books that I could check out and read?

As for his music my mom has this cd (which I've listened too quite a few times):

But as for his actual studio albums, which albums should I check out?

as a result the only album you'll see referenced as an essential is his 'Modern Sounds In Country & Western Music.'

He's got a lot of essential early singles, but most of them are probably on that record - What'd I Say, Mess Around, Hallelujah I Love Her So, Greenbacks, Hit the Road Jack, I Got A Woman, It Should've Been Me, Lonely Avenue, This Little Girl of Mine, Lonely Avenue, Drown In My Own Tears, Nighttime Is the Right Time, One Mint Julep....

-------
so I'm in a band now:

Soundcloud ---> http://soundcloud.com/greenwood-burns

got the Atlantic years and his country stuff.

i mean he covered so many bases, ricky Henderson ain't got as many bases as Ray Charles covered and Ray was Great in all of them and his versatility is taken for granted because this Man could do it all and yet sound like himself.
