as for 12 play, i think his best album is "the chocolate factory."
he showed more range and versatility, and it coheres more as an album.
the cover of "Sadie" always threw me off from 12 play.

I guess if you don't know much about rap music, you might like his rapping. Most were laughing at how terrible it was though, and then hitting skip.

But the songs where he wasn't rapping were great. His next album was much better overall though, IMO, and I think the double album was a little better too.

C'mon man just stop. How are you gonna hijack the Chronic's influence and try and piggyback R. Kelly on there. We see you man. 12 Play was a dope album but R. Kelly stole a lot of that look and sound and you know it. New Jack Swing/Teddy Riley/Guy changed modern R&B. Period. R.Kelly jumped on and he did his thing but he was hardly a "visionary".

12 play has some undeniable songs, but a lot of shite also.

career-wise, there's no competition between kellz and d'mumblo. just comparing the albums though, it's not remotely close.

the title track was a money track and another 2 were very good and the rest were album filler and a turkey who choked in his hype

if D'angelo made a 12 play then he would be in a league of his own instead his albums are drugged infested and one trick ponys.

his singing is hurting

songwriting is a dime a dozen

he can play and hit vamps, aside from that he is a Lounge act

imo, most of 12 play is filler. other than 'your body's callin' & 'bump n' grind' there's not much else of note on 12 play. most kellz' albums have one or two decent jams and the rest is forgettable.
