"Has there been a better Hip Hop album since The Chronic?"

The Chronic raised the bar like no other in Hip Hop. Has there been a better Hip Hop album since it's released?

It was actually my sister's but I listened to it just as much as she did. Anyway, that was the first time I ever heard a Hip Hop album be so laid back in production AND so aggressive in content at the same time. It was like the perfect blend of both. Plus the mixing, mastering and engineering of this album was just excellent.

The Chronic was also instrumental in the producer becoming as big if not bigger than the rapper. Before Kanye West became the popular producer/rapper that he is today, Dr. Dre was that man.

Love the whole "Beat and lyrics" feel to it. A bunch of young and hungry lyricists messing with Dre at his peak. That really does it for me.

Overrated is like Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt, which is a good album but not the classic album many say it is today.

But The Chronic? The Chronic is one of the best albums to ever be released, even outside of Hip Hop.

like the music (referring to "you" in a general sense), the album changed the course of rap music (again, regardless of your opinion on whether this was good or bad) for years to come and was absolutely EVERYWHERE when it dropped. Every single popped big time. Every car driving down the street was playing this shit.

Yup, The Chronic was any and everywhere.

The other interesting thing was to see it's influence even on R&B music. Adina Howard's "Freak Like Me" had a Chronic sound to it:

Yeah, it's overrated now. It's a good album but it's not a classic like The Chronic, Doggystyle, Illmatic or Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is.

People make Reasonable Doubt out to be on the Illmatic and Ready To Die level and the truth is, it never was on that level.

Reasonable Doubt may not even crack the top 5 from 1996 and I've seen lists online that put it as the best hip-hop album of all-time.

And all of this is directly related to Jay telling fans who hopped on at Blueprint that RD was on that level.

And I love that album...without a doubt his best...but people do overrate it.

It is not in that elite class of 90s albums.

23. "It's not that great IMO"
In response to Reply # 0

I'm not a Chronic-hater by any means but there are lots of later albums that to me are vastly superior like the early Wu-tang onslaught or Redman's second and third or Gang Starr's "Hard to earn" and ''moment of truth'' or ''illmatic'' (duh!) or ''Midnight Marauders" or first Pharcyde or even an ''insignificant'' album like Beatnuts debut (actually one of my all-time favorites)...

As for it having impact and general appeal and blah-blah is a different discussion that's not irrelevant but anyone who let those issues inform their *personal* feelings on the music is a tool; I'll never get that attitude at all, like someone likes album X more than the Chronic and some pinhead responds something about the impact... SMH... If the discussion is about impact, then yes it's relevant obviously, if it's a subjective feeling like "quality"-FOH!

mainstream impact, and STILL be heralded as a major classic....I'd say Chronic wins.

Illmatic is seen as the best Rap album by most folks...or at least it'll receive the most votes, and it for sure deserves it. And...people will say "it didn't have the mainstream impact because that's not as important" or whatever, but naw...some albums had initial AND mainstream impact, such as a "Get rich or die trying" but they are no longer seen as being classic.

It's actually impossible to compare Illmatic to Chronic, on a level of importance and all that. It's on some "Bill Russell vs Jordan" or even "Jordan vs Gretsky/Montana" to me.

So I'll just say....the best Rap album, rapping-wise, as far as pushing boundaries and creating long term impact? Illmatic. The best one, production wise, pushing boundaries and long term impact? Chronic.

And I still might like Doggystyle more than Chronic, and Low end theory more than Illmatic.

Why would you let impact inform your opinion on that? Only in Hip-Hop have I ever encountered that attitude; I guess I just don't understand...

impact leads to influence for better or for worse. Onyx impacted the east coast with Bacdafucup, an album I hate but everyone from Da Youngstas to Run-DMC hopped on that wagon.

In response to Reply # 28

I mean, I can hear their impact even on early Wu-tang but I would never argue they were ''better'' because of it... I mean, the Doors wer4e wack as fuck but I would never argue their impact in terms of making rock more dynamic and ''theatrical''... They still wack though...

That being said, I don't think the Chronic is wack at all but I wish more songs would have sounded like ''Deep cover''; I LOVED that song (still do) and was disappointed that the album didn't really deliver on its promise soundwise... It's still a great album though but not really a top 50 Hip-Hop album to me...

And I wouldn't call ''bacdafukup'' *wack* either, just not particularly good, like, at all...

And 2., LMMFAOOOOOO @ "Only in Hip Hop".....whoaaaa. No way that's possible.

The problem with good and better is that it's based completely on opinion of what you personally think. With impact, it's a lot easier to prove, although it can still be subjective as hell depending on what you consider to be "impact."

Even saying a rapper is better than another rapper, skill wise, may be easier than saying one album is better than another one.

I mention impact because it's just no way to justify what else can make an album better, because you're comparing too many things. 1. Content 2. Lyrics 3. Flow/structure of album 4. Production 5. Standout songs 6. Variety of songs 7. Personality/character 8. Mood 9. Originality/pushing the boundaries 10. Performance of the rapper(s)....and that's just ten off the top of the head.

...and if someone asks "has there been a better record than..." to a bunch of people, I would expect that he/she expects to get the opinions from said people.

Obviously, had the question been "Has there been a more impactful/important/influential/whatever album than the Chronic", then I would expect a discussion based on impact and so on; I just find it amusing that the word "better" (which as you said is clearly an opinion; only Anonymous would disagree with that) STILL leads to people bringing up impact. And yes, that is something I've primarily encountered in Hip-Hop discussions...

Maybe I dislike "The Chronic" so cause I heard that shit everywhere I went to the point that I got headaches just hearing any song from it.

Did it raise the bar, I'm not really sure but it did push the envelope on words you couldn't say on the radio that now could be said, and made weed smoking & the marijuana plant a non-taboo thing to talk about or see as symbol on clothing and in videos.

I'm a WestCoast ninja by default(Sactown reppin')..so I can see what happened, objectively, and call it for what it was.....

First off: Dat album *wadn't ALL DAT....

Second off: ish gave other-coastly ninjaz a misleading perception of *WC HipHop. It was PLENTY of crews out here that adhered to traditional-based HipHop aesthetics yet the *pop of Chronic somehow undermined that and created the illusion that all WC HipHop appealed to the *gangsta aesthetic, ....which is the BIGGEST LIE IN WEST COAST HIPHOP.

In THAT light, The Chronic wasn't a *beacon, ...The Chronic was a *doom...in terms of non-West Coastian's being served a coincedental offering of HipHop that wasn't the solidaric representation of WC HipHop but rather, by chance, the most noticeable(at the time) example of it(for the layman that didn't know better than to peep the respective underground scenes out here)..............

Proof-plain, ...Heiroglyphics popularity in the East came from the fact that East-coast Katz would've never expected that type of sound comin' outta here(West) based on the currentlty-available paradigms at the time(more attributable to labels den actual cultural representation).

This particular *WC record has needed ta be set straight for some time
yet the "majority/popularity-rules" paradigm of commercial-based HipHop has consequently prevented this real perspective from being presented with valid plausibility.

But for da sake of Cali,
FUCK ALL DAT. We droppin' dat REAL shit today.

the Chronic was cool man, i had the tape bought from Kemp Mill in Bailey's xroads pretty much before it was really on the MTV radar and everyone started jocking it (plus my gf's brother stole that shit anyway, fucker)

but it really wasn't like *that* to many ppl and this idea that it's some sort of supreme achievement in hip-hop that outshines all the others is kind of weird

like some others have said Doggystyle was probably the better album in reality
