Nah, there's lots of hate for pop music actually, particularly on these boards. Probably because the 'face' of the song has very little to do with the actual creation of the music.
While she probably has very little to do with the actual music (lol), someone like Rihanna has had a pretty phenomenal run that's slowly creeping towards a decade. It's fascinating, but we kind of ignore it because
1)It's seen as disposable 2)All she does is show up, sing a few tracks of premade songs, and an engineer tweaks the shit out of it after the fact.

it's not seen as disposable, IT IS DISPOSABLE there aren't more than 10 popular songs from the last 5 yrs anyone will give a shit about in 20 yrs. there are various reasons for this and i know you know the reason and WE don't need to debate that. but maybe contemporary pop gets criticized, because you know, it actually isn't good. a lot of shitty things make money in America, it doesn't mean it has aesthetic or social value

Pop songwriting is hard...Why say that it's not? It's a culmination of so many things while also keeping it simple-stupid. You are right in that an artist's fanbase plays a huge role in support but it's still more than just that.
if it were easy or simply just the task of writing the song itself, then Speak! (or the better example, The-Dream) would be huge. This is why consistent hit writers are so valuable.

but you are right that there are multiple factors at play when gaining a hit. there woudln't be so many one-hit wonders or "star" turn over if it was easy
