some of the specialness by the mid-80's (Tears for Fears biggest hits: "Everybody wants to rule the world" and "Shout" were a big sign to me that the pop thing wasn't as special anymore as it seemed a year or so before those songs were smashes)
but....
I have to admit "Head over heels" was a gigantic important special song to me and that special era. I got to give Tears for fears that credit.
For Simply Red, their first big hit "holding back the years" was MAJOR CLASSIC, it was/is so good, yes. Simply Red also had a sound that made some of their non-hits like "Infidelity" sound special too.
Then later on Simply Red had another special hit with the song "Stars" which was pretty MAJOR as well, to me.

While tears had more $ cuts Simply's catalog runs deep with soulful gems that most arent hip to A new flame alone gives them (him) my vote and he (they) have a better stage show
I liked both a lot at the time, had albums of both. Simply Red had that classic "Holding Back The Years" which I always associate with a well known, much loved British sitcom, because there was a very touching scene with that song playing in the background that still makes me tear up to this day.
Anyway, if I was dig out my CDs to play it would be Tears For Fears that I would choose over Simply Red. Although Simply Red had that classic song which I still love, Tears for Fears had more songs overall which connect with me on a more deeper level.

I liked Simply Red and all ("Money To Tight To Mention" is that shit)...
But Tears for Fears to me were just more consistent and has the overall better catalogue...
Tears always struck me as one of those groups that should be bigger than what they are (I feel the same way about Garbage and to a lesser degree Wang Chung---People forget how critically acclaimed that To Live And Die In LA soundtrack was...That shit was SERIOUS)
But yeah...Tears for Fears had ANTHEMS....Their music goes beyond the 80s in my opinion..."Everybody Wants To Rule The World" is GREAT, not good...That joint could have been recorded in the '60s during the Motown era....
GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....
