I need to narrow it down to only solo album cuts cause if we start talking about all his soundtrack stuff (A Dream), mixtape stuff (Like They Used to Say) or otherwise (E=MC2, etc.) I'll never narrow it down.

That said, E=MC2 is so fucking unreal it may make the list anyway.

People would be quick to talk about how Nas and Jay got far better songs/discogs than Common, mostly cause they probly can't look past a couple late career blunders (UMC namely) to remember how flawless Comm's catalogue was for most of his career. But damn, this really might be the hardest one. This dood got SO many classic tracks.

A lot more consistent, especially early on. Yeah, Common's got a couple stinkers, but so does Nas.

First off, I don't think anyone is in the same realm as Nas when it comes to the number of great songs. He has so many joints that are at such a high level to me.

But album-wise, I really think it has gotten to the point where Nastradamus has people under appreciating Nas' catalogue.

Illmatic - It Was Written - I Am (I rocks with that album) - Stillmatic - Gods Son - N - Life Is Good are all strong albums. And then you throw in The Lost Tapes and Distant Relatives and you're talking about 9 very good to great albums.

Resurrection - One Day - Like Water is a great run. I can't rock with EC. Be is a dope album. Finding Forever has its moment so I'll compare that to I Am as far as my opinion on it. And that's about it for Com. So all things considered, that's 5 very good to great albums and even if you add EC that is still only 6.

Obviously this is nitpicking because they are two of my top 10 MCs of all-times and shit

I've never really foxed with "I Am...". And IMHO, "Stillmatic" was half of a good album. You left off "Hip-Hop is Dead," which I thoroughly enjoy. But honestly, the "Untitled" album leaves me kind of cold. I do really, really like Distant Relatives and Life is Good though, no argument there.

I liked EC quite a bit. Don't love it, but I consider it dope. Liked "Finding Forever" well enough; even though I don't put it in his top tier, I enjoy it more than "I Am..." (and what stands out is that mostly the beats are the saving grace of that album). But I really enjoyed "The Dreamer/The Believer."

>Obviously this is nitpicking because they are two of my top 10

Pretty much.

I love the beat just playing with no "hook". And Comm's third verse is dope. He has a habit of cutting off dope third verses. The Food is another one.

I liked the vibe they were going for, building off the soulful hip-hop revival of Be, but with added instrumentation (outros of Start The Show, Southside and U, Black Maybe).

Imagine if the tracklist looked like this:

Intro
Start The Show (extended version)
The People
Driving Me Wild
A Dream
Southside
E=MC2
The Game
U, Black Maybe
So Far To Go (the shining version)
Misunderstood
Play Your Cards Right

now I know that lineup is kind of cheating because it uses tracks from a couple soundtracks and from Dilla's album, but they were all recorded and released around the same time, and together they make an album that would have ranked among Common's best imo

while we're imagining a different version of the album, just imagine that he recorded different, better lyrics.

with your tracklist.

But I listened to it recently and have a newfound appreciation for it. I bumped it hard when it first came out, then fell into the "it's lazy" category. And there are a bunch of lazy moments on it. But if you really listen, Comm came hard lyrically on that album with some vintage wordplay. And the beats are really good for the most part. Underappreciated album IMO, in hindsight.

Yup, that album definitely gets a bad rap. All in all it's pretty good with just a few mis-steps, which is why I made the new tracklist/playlist, although that doesn't fix the couple lazy bars you mentioned

...cause really the only song you left on there that had lazy bars was Driving Me Wild. You left on all the tracks that he destroyed.

I do need to give it another chance though. It's really my fault, I think I wanted/was expecting It's Your World Part 2 (or part 3 actually) and didn't give it a fair shot when the vibe was different. But yeah, tack it on the end if it's your thing. Really that tracklist I posted is just to illustrate that there was enough quality recorded during those sessions/during that time frame to fix the problems that are often cited with that album

Another thought re: Finding Forever. If memory serves, The Glory by Kanye was supposed to be the lead single for FInding Forever according to the first press release about the album. Not sure why Common ended up passing on that beat (as he did with Everything I Am and Celebration from Late Registration). Imagine Common over The Glory added to the better tracks from Finding Forever. Man.

That's one of my favorite Kanye songs. Everything I Am would've been dope with Common too.

I wonder why they never released Common's version of those songs. They gotta be somewhere.

Cee-Lo kills his verse and the hook.

Com's verse is thoughtful and honest.

That album pushed Com towards the top of my list.

I liked Resurrection when it dropped but by no means was Com one of my favorites in 94. Much like what happened with Thought on Illadelph, Com quickly became one of my favorites because he actually had something to say. At that point in my life I was listening to lyrics with a little more depth.

GOD is a great example of that.

Probably in my Top 5 favorite Common songs along with High Expectations, The Sixth Sense, 1-9-9-9, and Its Your World.

Common's verses are thoughtful and clever, as was often the case in that time period. I'm pretty sure you and I have discussed this exact topic but IMO, Common was the best MC on earth during that late 90s time period.
