"the most manufactured artists of our time?"

maybe its just me but was robbie williams one of the most manufactured artists of our time?
i remember his song millenium being shoved down our throats and it was multi platinum and won a bunch of awards
was that england's fault?

who else would you consider a manufactured artist besides JT?

He was a member of a terrible boyband called Take That who were HUGE ine eur4ope but barely registered in USA (maybe there was a song or two that hit). Dude wasn't even a songwriter in the band but he quit since he was the "rebellious" one who was something of a fuck-up but still cute and he started to hang out with members of Oasis and other lame 90's brit-phenomenons which created an interest in his character.

After a while, he in his solo-career was marketed as some sort of modern-day entertainer; like a boyband-gone-brit-pop Frank Sinatra and I never really got why because there's no voice, nothing cool there whatsoever-yes, he got drunk a lot and slept around but so what? So did I!

Either way, his celebrity-status and corresponding sucessfull career carried over to europe from britain (remember that Take That were huge all over europe so dude already had a "built-in" name).

Marketing him to americans though is a different thing and I think it's awesome that he hasn't truly made it there yet beyond "semi"-celebrity status because, again, there's nothing there beyond a cool, likeable image that isn't even very cool or likeable IMO...

Whatever, I know lots of girls who said he's really charismatic; I guess it's a chick-thing because I don't see it...

in a way that other female pop-R&B singers even if you only go back to the '90s wasn't.

Rhi is kind of like a "production line copy" of that idea. But at least there was no "front"... it's like "Boom, there she is"

not something I can say with Mike. Mike had solo albums in his Motown years, and while Motown especially with singing groups had a way of "promoting" their acts... you can at least see there was something -else- behind the product.

I don't think all the manufacturing in the world could have produced '79-forward Mike.

Which is something the "Mike copies" following him never really got.

The most hilarious of which is actually Alfonzo

Manufactured artist to me means an assembly line production of an artist that can't help but succeed because they have a ready made audience.

Boy bands, girl singing groups, certain white rappers, etc.

I think it is hard to say that is the case with Bey because there are so many similarity situated female artist who failed at what she is doing.

there were just a little more home grown. Motown is what inspired Bey's dad and he modeled them after that legacy.

Damn near eery move Bey has made was in service to her sound and image. What products she chooses to endorse, what movies she appeared in, how her public persona was disseminated after Destiny's Child, to what sound her singles are capturing.

more recently she's opened up a bit artistically and def guides her own ship, but to deny them first 10 years as anything but manufactured is terribly ignorant

what does that really even mean (to you)?

Every single successful artist that has major label backing has some sort of assembly line running behind them.

so what's the difference between an MJ team and a Taylor Swift teams? Are you talking people who don't write songs? Cuz that was a lot of motown...

a manufactured artist to me is somebody like Kris Kross, who was just walking in a mall one day and somebody approached them and said 'hey you guys should be rappers' then they were giving a record contract and people wrote songs for them. JT & Beyonce have been in this business for over 15 years and worked hard to get whatever accolades they enjoy. either one of them could have flopped in their groups & we would have never heard from them again

Two years ago he was the subject of the same anti-NY ridicule that is still reserved for rappers like Azealia Banks and French Montana. Then all of a sudden he's performing with Rihanna at the VMAs and getting major cosigns.

In response to Reply # 0

I mean as has already been pointed out, any successful artist has backing behind them that could be seen as "manufacturing". But I guess the answer would be whatever artist has the least amount of their actual talent displayed on their album, but actually had a large amount of success. Milli Vanilli weren't even on their own album, but it went multi-plat and won a Grammy.

watching that video really brings it home to me how fucking bizarre it is.

Being in the band looks like fun though.

And yeah, I read somewhere the 'she' did an LA show at some point in the not too distant past.

Then again, Hatsune Miku, as bizarre as the phenomenon is, isn't conceptually all THAT different from something like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGDeLkTlo_Q

Gorillaz was cartoon alter-egos for a project helmed by Albarn, Hewlett and other established artists, and to the best of my knowledge that was never a secret despite the band's role-playing for interviews.

Hatsune Miku is only a cartoon, with a voice run from a vocal synthesizer based on samples. ie, there is no singer who sang those songs, nobody behind the curtain.

I remember reading an article about how her albums were made. She had just about 0 input. She's just a face and a pitch-corrected female voice.
