"what do you all think of this esperanza spalding MJ cover?"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNNVaMJJL9g&feature=youtu.be

covering MJ is like tip-toeing through a minefield.
you can't try to replicate him vocally without sounding ridiculous,
and if you try to do the same arrangement, it just sounds like bad kareoke.

but i think she did her thing on this one.
the arrangement is killer. it's smooth without veering into smooth jazz territory.

the fact that i don't think it's awful
is a testimony to how good of a job she did.

thoughts?

I've only heard 3 performances...all covers.

1) Prince If I Was Your Girlfriend - dope to me, and my first time hearing her perform ever

2) this...not a fan

3) Overjoyed @ The White House - my fave of the 3

so what original music of hers should I look for?

The cover tune. The video.

I mean...I don't like smooth jazz and sue me but,...I'm tired of gender politics and the acceptance of LGBT lifestyles in mainstream media. We get it. Yay already. My dick loves pussy, sorry...burn me at the stake.

Loved her first album. Everything since else has been snoresville.

That was the worst video I've seen since "Come Close"

I am tired of hearing, seeing, be expected to care what people do in their bedrooms, just like I don't care if a person wipes their ass up or wipes their ass down.

Your knee jerk reaction to what I'm saying is a close second place in "things I'm tired of".

they band did too much in terms of stretching
out the "time" of the tune.

speeding it up here, slowing it down there...

the song had too much swing to qualify as smooth jazz
(although there were smooth jazz elements for sure).

and as for this...

>
>I'm tired
>of gender politics and the acceptance of LGBT lifestyles in
>mainstream media. We get it. Yay already.

i'll just leave that alone because it will derail the post
and turn it into something i'd read in general discussion.

"something I'd read in General Discussion" is a perfect way to sum up some topics

however unlike back in the day when a act could drop 5 or 6 albums on grp and tour or hit later the powers that be want a George Benson pop hybrid thing now and the alicia keys appeal.

i wish she could have a modern day return to forever band to play with to just do her thing in a Pat Mettheney kind of way

i love how un-straight forward her version is.
like some moments feel like you are slowing down in a moment,
and other times it feels like your heart is racing with adrenelyn.

and i love how the bass line is so... out there.

it would have been smooth jazz (speaking of which, I much like Grover Washington Jr.'s take on it; that was back when "smooth jazz" wasn't a radio format yet).
