"the further adventures of lord quas >> madvillainy"

The perfect weirdo album!! ...mv of course had better lyrics, but "further adventures" was put together better, imo....i guess it's because i got so attached to the bootleg of mv that leaked into cyberspace, i had a hard time adjusting to the official release...u dunno why, but for whatever reason "further adventures" gets more play in my ride...lol

My favorite shit from Lib hands down. The abrupt stops didn't bother me. You can tell Lib went in and did exactly what the fuck he wanted to do. I have to play it every month.

An album that I never get bored with when I go back and revisit it. It perplexes me that someone could claim to love Madlib but not love this album.

real talk, aside from "curls", "americas most blunted", "rhinestone cowboy", and "all caps"...i felt the same way about "madvillainy"....it's still a dope album, but i often skip to the forementioned tracks and keep it moving.

Madlib's rapping on Champion Sound is pretty much the worst rapping by a signed artist that I've heard in my life.

Oddly enough using the annoying helium-voice vocal-effect device for Quasimoto makes him sound slightly better, though make no mistake, still absolutely terrible.

(my favorite one btw) i'm really not surprised.

but everyone in here agrees that hes simply not good.

Like Bomb said, it's much more tolerable when he's Quas but Quas is for the lulz. Not a serious rapper so it's different.

Hityawitdat is probably the only song I really don't notice him sounding terrible on. Even then, there are some cringeworthy bars.

>Madlib is just fine as a rapper

let's be clear and narrow it down. Birdman and Silkk the Shocker are definitely worse, but they don't rap on beats i wanna hear anyway, so they wouldn't be in the discussion.

Madlib is just a painful listen on the mic. he distracts my attention away from what are often beats i'd love to hear.

at the Detroit reunion when a bunch of us went over to the DEMF (is that right?) It was right across the street from the hotel. It was the first and only time I saw Dilla perform live (RIP...he tore it down), but Madlib performed too. The first joint he did was "Raw Addict". I remember Lunchboxx looking at me and saying "this nigga is so wack, dude". LOL. He also did "Starz" and a few more, but he sounded a mess. Since then I haven't really been able to tolerate him on the mic.

I've never seen 'em live but I came across some old video footage on YouTube of this very thing last year. J. Rocc was damn near moonwalking across the stage, in the backdrop, acting as a hype-man. His silly side (see the "Stay Fresh" video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTc0r5L8DM4) was on full display.

If I find the Madlib video of JRocc distracting the crowd from Otis's underwhelming performance, I'll post it.

(And yes, I did just resurrect a 6-year-old post to respond to this comment. I know, I know. #OperationPleaseGetALife)

Saying it's better than Madvillainy is utterly blasphemous, but it's a great release. Madvillainy is probably the greatest rap album ever, though, so it's tough to compete with it.

the interruptions in Madvilliany bug me more than they do on Further Adventures. Maybe just because it's breaking up DOOM verses instead of Madlib verses, although I'm a fan of his emceeing as Quasimoto.

I don't think this is a fair comparison lyrically because I have a feeling that Doom sat on the lyrics for Operatio oomsday for many many years while I highly doubt that is the case of Madvilliany.

If I am wrong, I apologize.

Good question. I’m guessing it was a sample -related issue.

Yet another reason I don’t mess with Spotify.

Spotify is obnoxious for that reason. Songs coming and going all the time. For like 2 years "The Main Ingredient" by Pete Rock & CL had been taken down, no idea why ... prolly label bullshit. It just recently came back. Such a letdown when that happens.

Thankfully I'll always have my old iPod for backup ... so long as it's still working haha.

Stones Throw had actually taken the whole album off Spotify and then brought it back a few months ago but without "Raid"
https://twitter.com/stonesthrow/status/1067622688665960448?lang=en

Obviously, there was no explanation for the omission.

There are three publically-known samples:

- Nardis (At the Montreux Jazz Festival) by Bill Evans (1968)
- América Latina by Osmar Milito & Quarteto Forma (1972)
- George Clinton's Computer Games by George Clinton (1982)

If it's a sample issue, which song or songs do y'all think caused the issue?

In response to Reply # 0

I was never big on MF Doom's style, his rhymes are beyond weird on something Kool Keith would say and I usually like that type of wordplay but then Doom's flow bores me too, maybe cause how monotone his voice is or something, no matter I don't care for him.

When it comes to "Further Adventures Of Lord Quas" that album is kind of all over the place, it seems so random and I can tell it was forced cause of how dope the first Quasimoto album was, everybody, I mean EVERBODY wanted a follow up to "Unseen" and by time FAOLQ came out Madlib had done done made up about ten more aliases and was on some abstract jazz, started producing for his camp of rappers (Wildchild, MED, Declaime, J-Dilla, & Percee P) and kind of moved on from the SP12000 to producing with the SP303/SP404, so his sound was different and only did it cause PBW begged him to do it to shut up the fans.

Once it came out people were pleased or displeased, and didn't really want another after that, it's got some good songs on it but it was missing that vibe from the first album; that's how I felt when he did the "WLIB: King Of The Wigflip" album, I wasn't feeling it at all, and just became fine with him doing the instrumental album every three to six months deal.

co-sign on pretty much this whole post with the exception being that I like Madvillainy. I agree about Doom having a boring-ish flow; I think it works here, but I feel like if I've heard one Doom album, I've heard 'em all, so MV is the one joint from him I do bump.

as for King of the Wigflip, I was so amped for that, and then...
'Lib is still that dude, tho.

Glad you ended up mentioning it. I was always a Doom fan but I feel like casual hip-hop fans didn't catch on to Doom until Dangerdoom. I remember throughout college I'd never hear most folks mention Doom but once Mouse and the Mask dropped a bunch of folks were coming out of the woodwork mentioning random tracks from that album.

usually our tastes are fairly similar, so I'm curious if you have tracks that you use to ... I don't want to say convince someone, but you know what I mean.

65. "I Will Say I Liked "Born Like This" Out Of All His Albums"
In response to Reply # 63

"Born Like This" seems like a more focused album, like he actually tried to write something more cohesive than abstract lines to each beat; were the beats better than what Madlib gave him, a few but to me the instrumentals of "Madvillainy" was good though.

I will say I liked a few tracks of "Keys To The Kuffs" too, now that came out of nowhere when it did drop, Jneiro Jarel (aka Panama Black & Dr. Who Dat) is a way better rapper than Doom, but I will say the JJ Doom was more of a compilation than than a collaboration cause of all the guest artists on it.

>that type of wordplay but then Doom's flow bores me too, maybe
>cause how monotone his voice is or something, no matter I
>don't care for him.

im hard pressed to think of anyone else that gets as much props who's rapping is so abysmal
that said im not too into Further Adventures either....it sounds like if he worked on The Unseen (which is a perfect record IMO) for several months too long.

... are you interested in the English language?

Even if you don't *prefer* DOOM's rapping style, to call his rapping "abysmal" is just...

...lazy?

Fucking tell us what it is about his wordplay or his musicianship or fucking *something* other wise your argument carries no weight.

Yeah it's an opinion whatever but please tell us something.

I was relatively late getting into Doom myself (I say "relatively" because it was like 2004 haha - I had friends who'd been raving about him since Operation: Doomsday) but even when I wasn't "feeling" him I recognized that the dude could rap his ass off. To say otherwise is disingenuous at best.

his wordplay is basic af. he's boring as hell. his rhymes are nursery. he's monotone without any of the swag of guru. his rhymes are just fucking goofy my dude. cats are blown away by his lyricism and to me there's no there there.
honestly, if cats weren't so blinded by whatever hes peddling, and we could all just agree that he's just aight-to-average and nothing more, i could probly rock with that. But there's way too many cats that think he's gods gift to the mic and it just aint so.
ive never heard a verse from him that impressed me in any way shape or form.

not caring for DOOM. And I have tried too.

I like him in small doses I guess, like a guest verse here and a song or two there.

But I don't think I've ever been able to listen to Doom for like 30 minutes +... definitely not for an entire album.

That includes MV, honestly. Shit, I get hyped when it gets to Wildchild's verse cuz its something different.

I think the closest I've been to enjoying an entire Doom release was JJ DOOM.

To be fair, its been a long time since I've heard Operation Doomsday

I love the first one too.

No sense in having me pick one or the other (or Madvillainy). I love them all dearly.

It's mind blowing..

I agree that 2nd Quas is better than Madvillian. Crazier beats..more Madlib trickery for the fanatics like me.

Well, well, well. This literally just dropped into my personal Gmail:

I know it’s not new; I just thought it was coincidental.
