"From a 'stuck in the 90's brotha' (c) Nas - Help me get on new music" Sat Mar-23-13 12:57 PM by forgivenphoenix
hey yall, i was hoping some of you resident music "lovers" would be able to help me get into some music not made 20 years ago.
basically, i'm in a rut as far as my music habits and filtering are. i used to watch MTV, BET, and listen to the radio (yeah, i know i'm dating myself with that one) to listen to new music. but nowadays if it's not something that catches alot of hype here, i don't check for it.
what i was wanting from you all is either to list places you learn about new music (besides here) or bands from the past 5 years that you really like.
if you know of mellow yet lush and full music that is catchy i would definitely give it a listen. i'm not too particular about genre, although i tend to be more of a hip-hop head, but i'm more of a golden-age fan than of the newer stuff. i do like Action Bronson, A@AP, and Kendrick tho.

Don't know how much you know about them, but they consistently put out heat and follow the '80s/'90s ethos.
This year so far they've dropped the Gensu Dean & Planet Asia album, plus the Quelle Chris album.
Last year they dropped:
Apollo Brown & OC Apollo Brown & Guilty Simpson Oddisee The Self-Sacrifice compilation Sean Born Stik Figa Substantial two Black Opera albums Gensu Dean 7eventhirty
You mentioned liking lush sounds, and that's him to a tee. If you are coming from a hip-hop background, you could start with his first album, Animal Magic, which is the most instrumental hip-hop like album of his. Every last second of his catalog is fantastic, though.
On similar notes, I would recommend artists such as DJ Shadow, RJD2, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky. There's a world of music out there. I'm excited for what you are about to discover!
