"The Strokes - Comedown Machine (stream)"

On Pitchfork Advance: http://pitchfork.com/news/49944-listen-to-the-new-strokes-album-comedown-machine-via-pitchforks-streaming-platform-pitchfork-advance/

It's pretty substantially different anything they've done before. Super 80's. Don't know what to think yet. I'm pretty perterbed by it so far.

Album starts out strong but Julian kinda ruins a few songs towards the
end. Dude needs to stay far away from the falsetto.

I still like doing the whole going to the store on the day of thing. I love One Way Trigger though so if his falsetto moments are like that good. I just don't want any song that sound like Games.

to ever result in this bullshit holding up.

A hodgepodge of 80's new wavey aesthetics that despite the upbeat tempos & tones still manages to sound completely joyless, as if each member got to pick out their individual parts out of a hat in order to keep things fair & spend as little shared time in the studio as possible.

When Julian opened up their big follow-up album to the debut with the lines 'I wanna be forgotten......and I don't wanna be reminded' before he & the boys proceeded to shit out an album that sounded exactly like the first one without the catchy songs, I should have just heeded his request.

In a way I suppose I have, couldn't even tell you what the third album was called or name a song but know some chick was playing it around me when I first got to L.A. (same chick that was trying to sell me on Clap Your Hands & Say Yeah!, nuff said there).

But for some reason (perhaps holding onto the memory of traveling to South Street to get the British unedited copy of 'Is This It?' with the bondage cover plus 'New York City Cops' on it when it dropped, perhaps it's the boozy memories of the perky naked sorority chicks I can almost see again if I squint while hearing those songs) when hearing the Strokes have new material my natural reflex is to check it out before quickly being reminded:

"Oh yeah, these guys kinda fucking suck & I thought they broke up already but somehow they have a new shitty album out"

Maybe it's Julian, since he really is a total fucking bore. Or maybe his detached act would work in a different context like it did on Fallon when he did the Christmas duet with the Muppets that one time & therefore it's the band behind him who lack a single standout instrumentalist but who instead developed a reputation for being 'tight' as they all commit to doing as little as possible.

Or maybe they're a group of high-school buddies who don't really share much in common anymore but are contractually obligated to work together since they lack other options.

Sorta like we all can be at certain weddings or reunions when you run into that 'remember when?' type of friend you don't really fuck with much anymore besides some shared history, then you're stuck overcompensating with booze intake as he says 'Bomb, I got one for ya!' with a smile & puts on a Doors record so shitty you can't remember if you actually ever liked it or if dude's confusing you with someone else in the crew.

Anyway, I think I got about 7 songs (it might have been only 4 or 5 but felt like 17) thru this aimless tripe while typing this reply before turning it off because it was too bad to even ignore enough to think.

I would rather listen to a full Thompson Twins album than ever play this album again, at least those motherfuckas sounded like they were actually engaged in what they were doing & 'Hold Me Now' still kinda goes.

may have posted this before. back in my high falutin days i was in this free jazz experimental set that used to rehearse in a popular but very cheap ny building. we were long standing residents there, like the studio we used had been in house for a decade at this point.

there were tons of shitty by the numbers rock bands. at certain hours it was pretty much impossible for us to do our thing (we weren't noisey free per se). there's nothing more depressing to a bunch of jazz cats than having to listen to shitty rock chords coming from above below and all sides of you.

one of those bands was the strokes, right before they got on. so they get their deal but are still using the same spot. one day we're coming out and see julian and the other cat right outside. my boy who's pretty much a bigger asshole than me shouts out, "oh my god, arent you guys The Strokes?" Julian turns around with the smile of new found fame of being recognized in the street like, "yeah we are!" My boy shouts out, "your music fucking sucks!!"

officially the first Strokes haters. lol!!

not on his third shitty album, worried about whether the people around him are sincere.

No, he's worried about his unemployment benefits expiring and why he can't land gigs anymore.

Pretty good album. The problem with bands like Strokes and Interpol is that they get placed inside one particular box and its hard for them to come out of it by changing their sound. Even though each album is slightly different from each other, there is no significant difference musically.

anyhow, if youre looking for that catchy poppy 80s strokes, then they just served up another fine platter.

signature pose.

K, I'm pretty sure this is hands down their worst record. They don't even sound like themselves, which wouldn't be a bad thing if the songs weren't so half-assed. I'm pretty sure they made this record in two months, and it sounds like it. Diluted down because they can't get their shit together and Julian prob just wants to make another solo record. This is reminiscent to me of when Weezer went Green Album on us. And what's up with all these bands going super 80's? The Killers, The Strokes, and Phoenix all made super 80's records. It's a weird choice because it's clearly a trend that's played out, or going to be very soon.

The music isn't bad it's the singing IMO. Why the need to alter Julian's voice I don't get at all Slow animals could have been good but the chorus stinks. Only one listen but I don't really wanna go back to it anytime soon.

Only songs I dislike now are Tap Out and the last song. The music is good it took some time to get used to Julian's Vocals on a handful of songs Partners in Crime for example I hated now I listen to it regularly. That being said I still rank it 5th out of all their albums, but its a good record.
