What would you classify it as? Easy listening? Music doesn't get much harder than the beat for Deeez Nutts.

that INTRO ain't hard? I mean what the fuck are we talking
about here?

Furthermore, the thought process that an album that's well
mixed and "polished" can't be hard is hysterical at
BEST. So in other words in other for an album to be considered
"hard" it needs to be a sloppy, incoherent mess?

we're talking about The Chronic not being a hard album, it was
meant to have hardcore content over less aggressive music
it isn't a diss in this case to say it isn't hard, that's not
the same thing as saying it doesn't 'bang' or anything like
that
The Chronic doesn't have the low level desnity that a
GangStarr record, for example, does (and vice versa)

If The Chronic is a soft album I must have been getting my

revolved around the riots over Rodney King verdict....lol

I don't really understand why people lose focus of the
foundation of the discussion.

No one said it was soft.

I initially questioned it being the first album that came to
his mind and then upon Brew getting sensitive about being
asked a simple question, others explained why they wouldn't
consider it a *hard* album.

But no one said it was soft.

Not really sure why people can't have a discussion on these
boards anymore. Garhart brought up some good points as to why
he didn't see it as a hard album and all he got in response it
"my head exploded".

Honestly, this is a music discussion board. And there is just
continual non-conversation and sensitivity when anyone's
opinion is countered.

Read through this post again and you'll see people are
attempting to have a music discussion with you and all you're
doing is pushing the ignorance forward.

But hey, whatever makes you feel cool my man.

In response to Reply # 10

The Chronic is very melodic and has a lot of added synth lines and that isn't really my idea of a hard album.

I wouldn't say a hard album has to be a sloppy mess like you said but it does have to have a certain level of grime to it and I just don't think the fact that the drums knock on The Chonic classifies it as a hard album.

There are definitely some hard cuts on it for sure. But as a whole, I agree with Pop, it's too sonically produced to be the hardest album ever.

When you're in the studio and you're attempting to produce a hard track, at no point should you say "yo I think this joint needs a synth!"

But hey, I may be easy coast bias. Also, people may have different ideas of what is hard, grimy, dark etc.

I just responded because I didn't initially think of The Chronic as a hard album so it took me by surprise.

They took the mafioso rap in the logical direction by incorporating the classic and operatic feel of a lot of gangster films. I wished more hip hop beats had strings like this, it just sounds so epic and dark.

Since I was te first to respond to your reply I feel the need to resond again because I wasn't part of the back and forth.

Obviously we all have different definitions of what a "hard" rap album is and there's nothing wrong with that.

The reason I simply questioned your first reply of the Chronic because it isn't the first album that comes to mind when I think of "hard" albums. The album aimed to get mainstream appeal with its sample choice and overall production.

To claim that you don't understand why someone would say that its glossy production would knock it down a few notches on the "hard" scale doesn't make sense to me at all. Why wouldn't it? And that's not to say an album has to sound like 36 Chambers for it to be hard but the more you gloss up those Parliment samples, the less of an edge it's going to have.

If you listen to The Chronic back to back with Firing Squad, I'm not sure how you would come away calling The Chronic the "harder" album. Again, our definitions differ but for you to be so astounded that people don't consider The Chronic as a "hard" album is a bit ridiculous.

Melodic synth lines are just not as hard as the sinister string samples of Stick To Your Guns and I haven't even started talking about the lyrics yet.

You can't honestly be this confused over people's objection to The Chronic being the first album that came to the mind.

And I think people's responses are stemming more from that fact than the actual choice.

It was like someone asked "best seafood" and you answered "Red Lobster" without hesitation.

Glossy production? So now we're comparing it to Bad Boy's music? MY FUCKING HEAD KEEPS EXPLODING.

The degree of hardness (see? now you have me speaking ridiculously) can be argued but to be like "how could you name the Chronic in this discussion???" is what is ridiculous here and why my head keeps exploding.

>If you listen to The Chronic back to back with Firing Squad,

No, it's not ridiculous at all. It's a hard album. Again, the degree of hardness can perhaps be argued but for you to literally respond to someone naming The Chronic in this discussion with "Chronic?!??! Really?" is the ridiculous part.

>Melodic synth lines are just not as hard as the sinister

People's? Or just you and Garhart?

No, the response questioning The Chronic like it was some ridiculous notion that someone would call it a "hard album" is what is crazy here. That can't be overstated. You can disagree and think other albums are harder, but to literally be like "wait the Chronic was a hard album?" is out of control stupid. I will not respond any further to this discussion because of how stupid it is. Feel free to go on one of your long winded, unnecessary diatribes anyway tho.

Yes it does. Plain and simple. Sample choices drive your song. So Parliment is "hard" now? I get that Dre put some "harder" drums on it but it doesn't change the music to that degree.

I don't believe I mentioned Bad Boy. That was you. Doesn't void the fact that The Chronic is nicely polished which is not a knock on it at all.

>The degree of hardness (see? now you have me speaking
>ridiculously) can be argued but to be like "how could you name

That's not how I responded at all. That how you took it. I responded "The Chronic? really?" As in, I would've never named that album first when thinking of the "hardest" rap albums and was interested in why you thought it was. I didn't even discredit your choice, simply asked a question which you got defensive over. As a matter of fact, I even said "don't know if I would classify that album as hard" because I was actually thinkin about it since you brought it up. It didn't initially occur to me but I didn't say it wasn't hard.

>>If you listen to The Chronic back to back with Firing Squad,

See above. That's not how I replied at all. And if the degree of hardness can be argued than why is it ridiculous to question why The Chronic was the first album you thought of? And I see you're standing clear of the Firing Squad discussion.

>>Melodic synth lines are just not as hard as the sinister

I didn't respond again after my initial reply. It was Garhart and a few others.

>>And I think people's responses are stemming more from that

>
>No, the response questioning The Chronic like it was some

I haven't been long winded at all. And it can be overstated if you caught feelings over my question and took it out of context. So I can't pick your brain as to why that album was the first that came to your mind? Come on man...let's be a little less sensitive here. All I said was "The Chronic? Really?" And that was it. I didn't say that naming that album was ridiculous at all. Please show me where I said that.

>>It was like someone asked "best seafood" and you answered
>"Red
>>Lobster" without hesitation.
>
>Worst analogy ever.

Actually it's quite on point. If you weren't so emotional you wouldn't be taking this conversation so hard...no pun intended.

Simple music discussion was all that was needed. If you would like to expand upon *why* you see The Chronic as a hard album that would be great and would be getting back to my initial response like these boards are supposed to work.

But I'll understand if you're more interested on crying about your head exploding because you can't formulate a worthwhile response.

61. "it wasn't created to be a hard album though"
In response to Reply # 59

Dre smoothed it out on purpose
that's not to say it doesn't have hard songs on it, because it does
but to say it's hard as an album isn't correct
and don't try to name songs individually because I've said there are hard songs on it

Dead Prez and MC Ren are the only rappers with albums that make my white friends uncomfortable.
