"this is an appreciation post for the pitch control on turntables. "

some records just sound way cool
when they are slightly sped up.

before i deployed, i ripped some of my vinyl to my iPod.
when i ripped these songs, i had the pitch control of my turntable
set up so that it was playing everything slightly faster.

i listened to these songs on my iPod for a year...

and at this point, there are some songs
that don't even sound right when played at the normal speed.

some shit just sounds cooler when it's sped up slightly.
more soulful? more energetic?
can't put my finger on it.

but it's there.

anybody else know what i'm talking about? lol

The recording industry figured that out y ears ago. So you're pitching up something that's probably already been pitched up to make the artist sound more youthful.

I just realized Michael Jackson's BAD album was pitched up to almost mickey mouse proportions. Te footage of him and stevie singing in the studio proved it for me.

The most effective pitch up has been sly stones vocals. To me, made his vocals siiiiiiiick

Presumably for length issues.

What's weird is, if you have one of the 12"s from that album, they're pressed at normal speed, so if you were doing doubles or using an instrumental from the 12" and the vocal mix from the album, you had to watch the pitch adjustment pretty closely.

. . .on the 12" for the 'Come Close' remix and it enabled me to start putting 'The Hustle' into mixes (because, let's face it, blends are always way easier if you're working with the instrumental first).

My second copy of the song was obviously the album version and it was a double take the first time. Thought my turntables needed calibration or something.

Sometimes I'll buy a random record and accidentally play it at 45.

When I realize what happened and put it at 33, the song just sounds wrong.

Just assume, because it's a 12", it plays at 33⅓.

The most notable one where I couldn't honestly tell anything was wrong (regardless of the speed I played it at) was the Sonic Youth Anagrama album.

they were sped up.

Their club style was to speed up every song by AT LEAST 10 BPM...and they were doing this on CDJ's, so there was no pitch lock like on Serato. So some songs sounded straight chipmunk and WTF? worthy...but it gave energy to a lot of songs out there. When I would find the songs and listen, I'd really say "wait.....this is the same song?" They'd almost sound dull!!

maybe even more accurate? sound reproduction probably has a time lag somewhere, even if it's a microsecond, whereas in live instruments the sound occurs instantly--there's no space between recording and the music; it's just pure music. when we're playing music back from our speakers/phones it can only go as fast as the drivers in them.

on my turntable i try not to go overboard and only go up +1/2/3, depending on the song. i don't want to stray too far from the original. as a DJ i'd go up +5 or so, or else the crowd would fall asleep.

I dont know if this counts but I downloaded the 1994 or 1995 version of Prince song "empty room" where it is very slow and I sped it up with the drums and all and it sounds so much better than at the slow tempo at normal speed.

this former dj "dre" from new york was telling me about pitch control when he lived here in atlanta, georgia and played the barkays song "Propositions" at normal speed but slowed down the pitch control and that is the way the song should be played now instead of the fast new wave feel thats on the lp.

So many songs that I was exposed to back in the 80's and 90's through real mixtapes.. I ended up thinking the way they sounded on the tapes was they way they were supposed to sound. Then, when I heard the originals, I felt the tempo was too slow and the voices were too deep.

I see this as being beneficial when listening to older rappers and singers whose voices have changed over the years. Pitch control = a young sounding artist.. and who doesn't want their Hip-Hop sounding at least kinda young, right?
