i'll start.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPIVb7Y0QdI

^ "freedom," wham!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC1KXJNuPMY

^ solage, "i decided"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip_pjb5_fgA

^ aretha franklin, "freeway of love"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SidxJz94Svs

^ phil collins, "two hearts"

also, it would be cool if you said whether or not you feel that
the song succeeded in what the artist was trying to do.
(i seriously dig all the songs i posted. they didn't try to sound JUST like the funk bros.,
but they did their thing. the had the hooks, they had the back beat, they all found a
different way to compensate for the fact that they couldn't get the snares to sound
exactly like those motown snares.)

i don't think i've ever heard a song that was trying to capture the motown sound
that fooled me into thinking it was a motown record.

but there were some good records that came out of
people paying tribute to the funk bros.

what are some of your favorites?

while you can hear things that remind you of a certain act or part, thing is, if a act does it all the way it feels like a gimmick or contrived and before long its a cliche.

obviously i could name songs and whatnot however its only cool for a moment and then i want what said act really sounds like

mistermaxxx R.Kelly, Michael Jackson,Stevie wonder,Rick James,Marvin Gaye,El Debarge, Barry WHite Lionel RIchie,Isleys EWF,Lady T.,Kid creole and coconuts,the crusaders,kc sunshine band,bee gees,jW,sd,NE,JB

Miami Heat, New York Yankees, buffalo bills

especially with this part.
it's like... when folks try to DUPLICATE the motown sound,
it just seems like a pale imitation.

i think that's why i dig amy winehouse "back in black" so much.
because she had elements of phil spector's wall of sound,
elements of motown, elements of funk, even elements of
hip hop in terms of the production sensabilities...

but it sounded like HER.

that's where folks like mayer hathorn always fell short...
you always were left wondering where THEIR sound was.

edit: i missed that you said 'updated' this came out back when motown was doing their thing still in the 70s so it was more of a straight up african imitation than an 'updated' attempt
