"Erick Sermon "Double or Nothing" = biggest waste of great beats"

Shoulda had Reggie, Meth or Keith Murray rap over them beats

Erick Sermon cant rap at all

I'm listening to it now and i'm like this:
http://i.minus.com/iIdUrqeJTvgCv.gif

Dont ya'll come here saying Group Home either, they werent super lyrical but they had hardcore tone and mic presence that were sufficient enough to make the album tolerable

Erick Sermon though? He sounds like Ed Lova, Kid Capri, or some radio personality freestlying.

Look at these lines:

"Rearranged cameo-type strange pumping through your veins
What your mommy do, if you're not ready to die like Biggie
I'ma keep jamming like Ziggy"

"Listen close life is just what you make of it
If you wanna Be Happy like Mary J.
Then hey, then get rid of negativity in your circumference
Or outside your realm in mass abundance"

I havent listened to them EPMD albums in a while so I'll just say he couldnt rap on this album. If the E Double was rapping his ass off on them EPMD albums then I dont know why he couldnt show a glimmer of skill on "Double or Nothing."

They, especially Malachi, make Keith sound like Canibus in his prime. That's one album that REALLY was a case of the beats carrying the artists. Y'all niggas stay making excuses for it because of your bias towards it. No, their hardcore tone doesn't exempt them from being placed in the same category you're putting E Dub in.

>especially Malachi

this is so cliche at this point.
malachi has got mad lines.
he had the best verse on livin proof (the song)

"when i take flight... (like who kid) like mike"
that verse was the best on the whole track.

the reason niggas shit on him for the last goddamn time is because he used an outdated rhyme scheme when he came out.
he was rapping with 1980-esque single syllabel schemes when people weren't doing it like that anymore in 1994.

he wasn't wack. he just used a simple, out-dated style for the times.
he had a good voice and could keep beat well enough.
somebody like lil b is 0/3 and you always hear malachis name brought up for "wackest rapper" convos.

Even back in the day I felt that dude was a waste of time. My opinion remains the same from day one. If dude was from any other region of the U.S., y'all niggas defending him would call him garbage. If he wasn't over those classic beats, y'all wouldn't have given him the time of day. Y'all cats let nostalgia cloud your judgment, IMO.

I've seen cats on here make all kinds of excuses for Malachi all because of their love for GH's debut album. The same cats would call any rapper from another region that was on Malachi's level wack with no problem.

That kills the entire argument for Malachi's case.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

...that Erick's "Double Or Nothing" wasn't a total waste of beats cause even though the album was better than his first album "No Pressure", he was spitting some worthwhile lyrics on it and it was dope music to listen to at the time and it was also better than any of PMD's solo albums (he had good beats and guest features but PMD isn't as entertaining lyrically solo as Erick Sermon was).

Yep. Add the Dilla remix to the similarly sounding Enigma' album and it starts to make even more sense.

I think a real life friend told me this on some straight from Quest or Thoughts mouth shit.

Reggie, Rockwilder and Sugarless (Tyrone Fyffe) had their hands in several tracks. Pretty much the only album of his this happened on. Wonder why? Kinda explains why the vibe was so different though.

And I actually enjoy listening to Erick Sermon rap on most of his other releases.

Everybody who was in the studio with him when he laid down the "my style is butter like worth" line needs to catch a busdriver uppercut.

Talk about dope beats, this album had way even more & better dope beats than "Double Or Nothing".

discogs lank: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Insomnia-The-Erick-Sermon-Compilation-Album/release/750180

tubeyou album stream lank: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CG1O839-dOg&list=PLXdvhUeS5ptK0HbslpJiffyjfNNqEzyHU

And we can't forget that it included one of my top 20 favorite rap songs..."Funkarama" from Redman (who produced this too).

"Funkarama" tubeyou lank: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T-owlnvWBg

...or better yet this joint by the Wixtons "Up Jump The Boogie".

...one of the kats from The Wixtons still hangs-out & travels with Erick Sermon (I know this cause I met him & Erick back in 2004), also I think some of the members of L.O.D. still hang with Keith Murray but as far as the other artists, I'm not sure, they probably got day jobs now.

This is my favorite Keith Murray song and I've told him this. I don't think it's better than "The Most Beautifullest" or anything like that but to me this shit is just so dope. The production is sublime.

I'm not sure why 'Insomnia' has the overly-edited radio version.

"Funkorama" is mostly uncensored, except for two instances of "Def Squad's in the house for ______." I don't know what he says, but it's censored on all versions of the song. My theory was that he shouted out the year (ninety four?), but they edited it out because it was released later. I really have no idea.

He says the original year and because it was released later they left if mute. I like the edit sounds on "It's That Hit" so it's cool with me. I'm not a big cussing person so if you can edit cleverly I'm all for it.

it's not Slum Village, Quasimoto, Guilty Simpson, or anyone those of you who love what has been termed "contemporary street rap" can't wait to list in the post either.

while N.O.R.E. came to mind, I generally think the beats that made him famous are a SPECIAL kind of carcinogenic wackness, so it's an eye for an eye. his rapping in that time compared to anything he did with Capone nearby was inarguably WACK though. hit or not, that was a good dagger in the side of major label-backed hip-hop.

the answer is Lil Wayne on The Carter IV.

whether those beats are "great" are a matter of taste, but I did notice that there was a distinct disconnect between the "host" and the beats in a way I hadn't heard since Jay's Kingdom Come (before BP3 came along, it was his greatest "cigar" of an album) to the point I began to question if Wayne was getting an inverse "Nas" pass when I read reviews of this album.

Double or Nothing is what you'd call an above average if not outstanding period piece. in productions, vibe, and general construction of the songs. the problem many listeners have with Erick as a solo artist is the balance Parrish Smith provided inside EPMD. IMO, neither of them sounded right without the other for extended sessions, which is why both the breakup and the reunion was a big deal.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

everybody who did a guest spot went IN...i missed parrish and E together at the time, but E still had better folks to bounce off of than parrish did, and E still had that personality and beat selection

...i STILL don't think kingdom Come was that bad, just not good, but after the first Blueprint of jay's, he just put out some great singles surrounded by lackluster filler and called it an album...

carter 4 is pretty bad tho...it's hilarious it sold as much as it did, cause i didn't hear anyone pumping the album, online or off...

I always thought Guilty was pretty nice. His lyrics are great, he just needs to switch up the flow every now and again.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

a cut above Nice & Smooth. (and THEY used to irk the shit outta me for constantly getting props in blatant disregard for their wackness. i think they got a pass b/c they were kind of throwbacks to the old ' get the party started' type of emcees).

but they had joints.

but i actually rocked the hell outta Double Or Nothing. i thought all of the guests ripped it. and erick actually had some aight verses on there.

"i come wit da mother ship, and wit some other shit". that actually works for me.

but then he'd also say shit like,

"if i couldn't beat him then my conscious would defeat him"

and i'd go solidly back to hating.

but cot dayum, the beats on that shit went HARD.

this might be revionist history, but I think the got their respect because they stayed in their lane in terms of the content they put out (for the most part) and they complimented each other very well.

I know Aaron was actually on Welcome but his voice was sampled on other songs. Even Red's Funkorama had 'em on there.

Lil Dap was always a decent MC.

He is waaaaay better than Malachi.

Yea, Dap was simple but his voice was unique and he rode those beats much better than Malachi.

He also managed to drop some dope lines.

I think he gets a bad wrap to be honest.

I mean, he ain't great by any means, but damn, he was Malachi, Silkk tha Shocker bad.

He wasn't the worst ever; just an average level dude. He just gets caught in the crossfire whenever folks talk about GH. Malachi is the real joke of the group.

If I was in a cypher with dude back then I wouldn't have dissed him. He had a nice simple flow with a cool voice. Lyrics weren't very strong but also weren't outright wack. His man was straight wack. Dap just sounds like your man who loved hip hop and like to rap. He wasn't good enough to get a deal but if yall rapping in the hallway you wouldn't tell him to go in the house. Nutcracker gotta go in the crib though.

Yes, his similes suck and he was coasting as an mc (not that he was ever Rakim but I digress). However, the beats are just amazing and songs like "Tell 'em", "Welcome", "Boy meets world", ''Bomdigi'', the cuts with Redman etc.; that's an ace album IMO and I don't really care that he sounds silly with the lyrics...

his "Why doesn't he let the beat breathe?" flow pacing highlights this.
For Erick it just seemed like he was overly impressed by punchline rappers at the time.

I know we are here discussing music but after watching that Funkorama video I gotta bring this shit up. Erick was often called the gay (as if there was only one) rapper by Wendy Williams back in her WBLS days in NYC. I've seen EPMD live a couple of times in the past few years and Erick has the most effeminate movements of any rapper I've ever seen. In the beginning of Funkorama he does that ill sway from side to side that says...well "HAAAAAAY". I don't care if he is or isn't, some cats just have those manerisms and aren't gay. I'm just saying that E Double has tons of respect because when I saw him in Bed Stuy and he was walking on stage rocking with one hand permanently bent. Heads would acknowledge the elephant in the room but kept on rocking with EPMD.

I applaud Hip Hop for not putting pressure on E Double and letting him be the dope producer/rapper that he is.

I think Slick Rick holds the effeminate rapper crown. Maybe it just seems more magnified with E because Slick Rick's effeminate behavior has always been front and center.

Actually Slick Rick is higher on that list because his lyrics are suspect as hell. "drop a pot of semen on em" ?
I've seen Rick live and that Egyptian dance he does while fly as hell is also effeminate as hell.
