I wouldn't put Hi Tek in that list or anywhere near it, but Alc (7), Madlib (8), Exile (10) is hella reasonable, all things considered.

- Alc is currently killing it! Got WAY better over time.
- Madlib is a BEAST!
- Exile is retarded good and Blu worked with him on two DOPE albums.

Dre is top 5 easy on my list, but just cause the joker didn't include him means nothing.

Had he took out Hi Tek and input DJ Spinna, list would be on point, imo....

It's HIS list, tho. *shrugs*

We see through all that boo boo like it's ghost shit... (c) Quelle Chris

...the west coast, I like a lot of producers, so what if my top 10 doesn't include a west coast producer but that doesn't mean I don't like hip-hop producers from the west, mid-west, or down-south.

Back in the day some of my favorites did include kats like Bobcat, Muggs, Jinx, Alchemist, Joey Chavez (who is still in my top 20), Sir Mix-A-Lot, & Arabian Prince; but I was never impressed with Dre & Quik's production.

LOL at the idea of a list of his top beatsmiths being wrong.

Does it surprise anyone that people like Dre and Quik are not up there? First off, they're more than "beatsmiths".. They are real producers.. And secondly, if the gfunk was that influential to him, I think we'd have a very different Blu than he one we've heard. It's pretty obvious who his influences are.. No?

Nah.. they are.

I prolly shoulda just left that part out seeing as that has nothing to do with Blu.

Personally, I just wouldn't classify or call Dre or Quik "beatsmiths".

I reserve that title for the folks who are known to mainly bang shit out on the machines.. sampling, chopping, looping, and programming. I know Dre and Quik do that, too.. but they are known for so much more.

The other guys are real producers to me.. but most of em are mainly known as beatmakers.. like "here's a beat cd, take your pic".

Anyhow, like I said.. I shoulda left that part out. It was a passing thought that I typed out right after I got high and logged in.

And even that I'm cool with since at one point Tek WAS one of my favorites and also.............this is HIS list haha!

My personal list wouldn't have no Dre, Quik, or similar (West Coast) cats either since that's not the sound I generally like, no disrespect.

Because when you inject "producer" it summons people like Dr Dre, Rick Rubin etc when that's very obviously not what they're going for.

As far as his list goes, his top 3 is a pretty safe and hard to abdicate. I'm really disappointed with some of his choices, but hey, who am I to tell someone who their fav beatmakers are?

This is just another way we minimize the art form in which we love. So now we have to distinguish between beat maker and producer? Last time I checked, the beat maker was the fucking producer. This whole differentiation of a producer and beat maker in hip-hop came as a cop out to the claims of Dr Dre using ghost producers. That's when people said, it's ok because Dre is producing in the "classical sense".

Fuck out of here with that shit. It undermines great producers in our beloved genre of music. And I don't believe any of us are in these studio with these guys so no one can really say who is actually doing what.

If anything, I was trying to excuse why someone like Dr Dre should be in another category rather than be seen any lesser than he deserves. I think he's bigger than a beatmaker and if someone says that he's not on their list, it's because his strengths/influence isn't in their criteria.

I just think the term hip hop producer is too ambiguous now, that's all. I got nothing but love and respect for the past greats (Larry, Paul C, Marley etc)
