Which of course is Prince influenced. But I think it say can be more directly reflected as an influence on someone like say Frank Ocean than Prince.

Yes, nobody will ever influence anyone ever again after Prince.

For instance P and MJ had Sly and JB before them
And these cats have P and MJ
But after them who is it?
I can't see someone dedicating an entire record to Timberlake a la Voodoo
Or cats making their entire career off of the Miguel sound

I've literally talked with a number of singers who got into the shit because of that and cite it as aprimary influence on who they are as an artist. Not to mention the artists that ave already been begat from it.

Until then, they're all considered direct p influences

R Kelly was spawned from New Jack Swing.

So, maybe we should be giving more props to Teddy Riley's influence.

Princeguy reviews:

"No pretentiousness.

No pompous re-interpretations.

Sometimes, a movie is just a movie. You work hard for your money.

The decision is yours.

See and enjoy what YOU like."

i see it now w/white folks in their 30s dropping references to Jodeci and R. Kelly. they'll make jokes about 'body rolls'. you may have seen clips of lil white kids (Timberlake & Ryan Gosling, i think) singing some Jodeci song on the Mickey Mouse Club in the 90s. and remember that Lonely Island (JT + Andy Samberg) 'Dick In A Box' song? that whole thing was all R. Kelly.

anyway, yeah. i'm pretty sure Kellz and Jodeci had impact outside R&B and/or outside Black folk.

again, is there a figure in popular music casting a shadow as wide and long as MJ's or Prince's? not right now. will anyone ever again? i have no reason to believe it won't happen again.

fuck you.

But they're all 80's based
Who got next? Badu, Winehouse?
I can see that
But it's easier for me to think of singers than musicians

but as for who's up next -> MJB. ask Keyshia Cole. and Melanie Fiona (a little). and Marsha Ambrosius, maybe.

Amy W...ugh. i guess so. i've already seen that.

Erykah & Jill have already influenced Chrisete Michele, IMO. there could be others.

again...none will cast a shadow like Prince & MJ, i suspect. but those 2 figures are extremely rare in popular music history. and i have no reason to believe we won't see their like again ever. maybe we won't see it in the same form though.

fuck you.

Name more than a handful of clones of Prince & MJ worth keeping around for a lifetime of music.

There were greats before P and MJ
(Sly, JB, Stevie, Ray and the list goes on)
I don't see folks carrying that tradition or trying to take it to that level

give these ppl some time, man.

plus: we're old. we're not the best equipped to judge whether the new jacks are doing it as well as the acts we came up with. i'd leave that to the next generation, honestly.

fuck you.

In response to Reply # 0

because the fusion of R&B,Pop and Hip Hop which was a late 80's thing echos Teddy Riley.

now Prince was a Better Artist and Musician than Riley on a whole, however Riley's blending and playing in those styles has held up longer.

i mean Riley was more respected in all those fields and he been doing that his whole career.

hip hop acts sample loop and use Prince music, however Prince was a joke with hip hop music and the purple kool aid heads know that.

81-85 was the prime and peak of the Minneapolis sound and when Prince stopped using that sound he basically was just riding on that past.

folks who cite him, cite Prince back when he counted and not the Lberace vegas lounge act he became over the past 20 plus years, imo

U got to get out of the house more Maxx...Prince's sound is EVERYWHERE right now...

Everyone has to have their "Prince" sound in their arsenal...

From Little Dragon to Maroon 5 to Katy Perry...Dude's imprint is HUGE...

But all this^^^doesn't mean someone will not have that same impact...That's where I disagreed with the OP....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....
