I love all the early work. Never really got into the last couple albums, but I'll give them a shot. They (or he, I guess) were my shit in high school.

Trent went from overrated to underrated to rated about as he should...that Social Network score is special.

a few weeks ago. I thought I'd start with Downward Spiral. Great album. The man is (was?) extremely talented. As much as I like the album, though, it's a bit angsty.

but I s'pose without the context of the rest of his career it's a bit useless.

Always have to credit Fragile for getting me more into what engineering and mixing could do for an album, even if it was drawn out and a lil' flawed at points. I'd say that's the easiest NIN album to get into for newcomers that don't have a hidden anger; otherwise, Downward Spiral or PHM of course. Actually, With_Teeth might be the easiest entry point, but that's more of a pop (relative term) album and doesn't really prepare you for Heroin Trent.

One of the best shows I've ever seen in my life was seeing NIN at the national park in China. If you want to see an extremely awesome live band mixed with excellent artistic direction in lights/tehnology, here's a prime example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOJUxZizOpg

“Nine Inch Nails are touring this year.

I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show. Calls were made to some friends, lots of new ideas were discussed, and a show was booked – which led to another, which somehow led to a lot of shows.

The band is reinventing itself from scratch and will be comprised of Eric Avery, Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis, Ilan Rubin, and me. The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014.

Lots of details and dates to come. See you soon.

Rather then assembling the usual group of stage ass kickers, this groups seems much more experimental and progressive minded (King Crimson).

Im hoping they kinda go very trippy with this lineup.

in fact i was going to up (sorry Reg) either the coachella or the 2012 elec. thread with the true debut concert date as i suspected they would do what a lot of bands do before their official debut or reunion at coachella: play at least one club date. alas i didn't get myself sidetracked with such speculation so the uppage was moot, but yes, there will be a few HTDA tour dates this spring, but instead of a full fledged tour, it's gonna be NIN. i do hope i get to see HTDA at some point if not this year.

Like Angels feels like (and sounds like) an extension of his soundtrack work which he's been mired in...Im pretty sure the chance to go out with a bunch of seasoned rock dudes seems like a great break.

Notice there's no mention of Atticus Ross in the NIN press release

Listened to Downward Spiral next. More glitchy and experimental but the songwriting is not as good as the debut. It did produce that hit single on it.

I'd say the songwriting on DS is actually better than PHM. The songs feel much more complete and varied - as much as I love PHM, it doesn't have a Piggy or... well, or the last half of the album, which is (imo) some of Trent's best writing, where music/lyrics/arrangement all gels together perfectly.

and I agree with below, it's got his most cohesive songwriting imho.

His spot / song in the Sound City documentary really opened me up to checking out his old NIN stuff

i didn't stream it, but i preordered the vinyl/CD/download. i heard the last EP, which i think is all on the album, although i'm not sure if they are the same versions/mixes. the debut EP from some years back was good. they were finding their footing, but i liked it. i think they've improved a lot as a group and mariqueen as a lead vocalist since then. i agree with Reg above that HTDA is an extension of the scoring work in recent years to an extent, but i think more generally the band system allows trent to explore some areas that maybe wouldn't have fit NIN at least until we hear what he has in store for this year and next.

>His spot / song in the Sound City documentary really opened me

i preordered that soundtrack as well and really want to see the documentary. lee ving is a nut. i'm eager to hear all of those songs on the soundtrack.
