Which band do you like more?

Personally, I'm going with P-Funk.

I'm surprised to hear this come from you. I love the hell out of the funk mob but don't think they've ever made a complete artistic statement as potent as Stand! or There's A Riot Goin' On.

the only thing P funk can do better than other R&B bands is play. other than that nothing else.

George Clinton himself worships at the musical Altar that is Sly Stone.

calls him the greatest,

Sly and the Family Stone got the better songs

Albums

production

Arrangements

and those songs still hold up better today.

Clinton and crew are/were bad, however Sly and the Family Stone changed the whole game period.

the better question is Sly Stone versus Jimi Hendrix

mistermaxxx R.Kelly, Michael Jackson,Stevie wonder,Rick James,Marvin Gaye,El Debarge, Barry WHite Lionel RIchie,Isleys EWF,Lady T.,Kid creole and coconuts,the crusaders,kc sunshine band,bee gees,jW,sd,NE,JB

that's not to say that Gc & Co. *dont* have $ trax...but Sly set the entire world of music on its ear. it's really understated how much of an impact his innovations had on music & his peers, on those that followed, and across the spectrum.

Sly is a giant.

I wouldnt compare either one of them because for one, I saw p-funk live back in 2009 and toke pictures of the entire show and they KILLED IT live and Michael Hampton was playing the hell out of all guitar solos and number 2, I really like Larry Graham's bass playing and his confidence as a performer.

I also saw Larry Graham live a year ago and not only did he killed the bassplaying on IMaGETTING from Prince produced gcs 2000 cd but he got a standing ovation after they did one in a million which stole the entire show from keith sweat,a taste of honey, whodini, and loose ends at the kiss 104.1 flashback festival 2011.

The 70's were better than the 60's.

Most of Sly & the family stone's music was from the 60's.

The 60's was when bands tried to spark things up on a short scale.

The 70's was when bands got elaborate and stretched things out in a satisfying way (yeah I know Isaac Hayes sparked that in '69).

Most would admit Sly's 60's stuff is cute and all but not really designed to satisfy.

P-funk definitely satisfied and then some throughout the 70's.

Yeah Sly stretched some on Riot but Sly famously messed up the sound quality on Riot so...Sly couldn't even do that right, as far as the 70's thing is concerned.

ex: people like Marvin Gaye's 60's stuff...but people are stunned/enthralled by Marvin's 70's stuff.

70's were too much a progression from the 60's...so Sly's 60's thing doesn't compare to P-funk's 70's achievements.

I agree 100% percent brother and that is why I wasnt too crazy when someone beat me to getting sly and the family lp "stand" since I hid it in the back of the stacks at the thrift store. any pfunk lp that I see at the thrift store, I have to get it like I saw uncle jam wants you lp and I had to get it.

>The 70's were better than the 60's.

Are you talking specifically about soul/R&B/funk here? If someone made that statement regarding, jazz, rock or pop, I'd say they were wrong as fuck )ESPECIALLY jazz) and while I could see an argument for *albums* in R&B being better, I'm not sure about the music/songs at all...

>Most would admit Sly's 60's stuff is cute and all but not
>really designed to satisfy.

Huh? What was ir designed for then? To annoy?
>
>P-funk definitely satisfied and then some throughout the
>70's.

So did Sly between 67 and 73...
>
>Yeah Sly stretched some on Riot but Sly famously messed up the
>sound quality on Riot so...Sly couldn't even do that right, as
>far as the 70's thing is concerned.

The murky sound is part of that records appeal, why would anyone hold a positive sonic trait against an album?

>70's were too much a progression from the 60's...so Sly's 60's
>thing doesn't compare to P-funk's 70's achievements.

I don't agree with this either; Sly was mixing genres and practically inventing the 70's definition of funk, P-funk may have perfected/refined it but I don't see how that is a greater *achievement* regardless of the quality of the music.

Anyway, both were great, I don't want to pick sides but P-funk never did albums on the level of ''Riot'' or ''Stand!" and I don't think they were as important/groundbreaking either. AMAZING collective though...

P-funk would be the correct answer.

I dont see why you would compare these two bands because Larry & Bootsy are very good friends and they both play together and have a funk university that can be seen on Graham's website.

I am just fine. I dont see why they both are being compared because Prince does live covers of sly and the family and he also did the induction speech for P-funk into the rock n roll hall of fame in 1997.

ever in music history...

I will say this....

within the PFunk discography you could find the same type of music that made Sly and the Family stone a distinctive ground breaking band.... Pfunk's discography is just too vast, and too deep ....they could do pretty much all the other bands style and master it..

it's just too immense

I was never big on Sly's music, some songs were dope but some songs were annoying to me as well.

Sly wins this comparison by a (Sir) Nose.

Both groups were epic and put out great material.

But I have to give Sly the nod because I think he helped to lay the groundwork for what George later did with P-Funk.

But this really is an Ali-Frazier type of toss up. It could go either way.
